What would you say the mum boot of trainers looks like?

What on earth did you wear before you wore this?

scandikate · 30/12/2021 10:33

75% of the mums on the school run have Vejas. I love them but feel a bit of a cliche if I buy some!

AmIoldbutdontrealiseit · 30/12/2021 10:34

@TerribleCustomerCervix Exactly, I had my first pair at 11 I think, the black and white boot, which I’ve actually just bought again. Before that I had a simple, white, battered shoe pair. They’re not my favourite as have had Adidas Gazelles, Stan smith. Nike over the years, I suppose they could all be poked fun at if you’re 30’s upwards or a mum?! Hate it, what should we do, shrivel up and die or be handed a uniform on our 40th birthday that we have to wear in order not to dress too young 🤷🏻‍♀️I just wear what I like.
I personally have never liked the look of NB, my mum wears Sketchers, for the comfort, I don’t like the look. I like Vans but not on myself and for me, they remind me of teenage lads or young girls, again just my taste and many will think the same about Converse I’m sure

@Legoninjago1

Never heard of mum boots but if they're meant to be dull, practical and good value for money i don't know why anyone would say Veja or Superga! I actually think they're quite cool and def not good value!
I don't understand it either.
BleuJay · 30/12/2021 11:39

Converse. Hideous on most over 25.

Legoninjago1 · 30/12/2021 11:50

Off on a tangent but has anyone heard of Rocket Dog boots? Just ordered some which would probably qualify as mum boots (she says stuffing her converse clad over 40 feet under the tableSmile)

🤣 ‘Hideous!’ 🤣🤣🤣

Yes. They are great!
Legoninjago1 · 30/12/2021 12:36

Ah great to hear @coodawoodashooda !
Will report back!

Coffeepot72 · 30/12/2021 13:06

@GettingStuffed the link you have posted for gran boots, these look like timberland work boots (if you ignore the furry cuff) that you’ll see on practically every construction site in the country?!?

Winecurestiredness · 30/12/2021 13:10

In my area (home counties) its definitely the white low top converse. If you're a bit of a quirky mum it's a different colour in high tops. If you're a yummy mummy it's Vans old skool. If you just don't give a fuck or you're alternative it's DMs.

Winecurestiredness · 30/12/2021 13:11

For me personally I love my knock off New look DMs

Weegiewtf · 30/12/2021 13:25

I don’t wear mum boots or mum trainers (using the mn classification guide) but I do get slagged off as being mutton dressed as lamb for wearing shoes young people wear too.

So where do we stop putting people down for their clothing and footwear choices?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/12/2021 13:36

@Coffeepot72

Oh dear *@Mushrooms0up*, I really like the second pair of boots in your post!
There's no for me, I like both pairs! I also wear Stan Smiths which I noticed got a mention earlier in the thread. Not that I'll be replacing them as they no longer make them in leather!
CeCeSchmidt · 30/12/2021 17:52

Superga and Veja.

Basically whatever branded trainer the White Company is selling.

CeCeSchmidt · 30/12/2021 17:52

Also Stan Smiths.

catfunk · 30/12/2021 23:10

I don't see vejas as mum trainers (maybe trendy insta mum)... I think of frumpy comfortable trainers such as sketchers worn with bootcut jeans (from the 00s) and a purple polo neck as 'mum trainers'.

Allaboutyou222 · 01/01/2022 09:51

Wear wtf you like is my view. Trainers are everywhere. Unless you’re wearing the latest box fresh Jordans then you’re never going to be cutting edge!

It’s a ridiculous dilemma…wear ‘cool’ trainers and you’re mutton dressed as lamb. Wear what you like and you’ve ‘given up’. It’s almost as if women can never win….

Bagelsandbrie · 01/01/2022 09:55

I must live in some weird bubble (South Norfolk) because I have never heard of or seen anyone wearing Vejas and yet they’re mentioned so many times on Mumsnet.

Round here the mum trainer of trainers is probably Stan Smiths. Closely followed by Converse.

But I am not in any fit place to judge anyone for that they wear - I’m 41 and go for comfort over fashion due to disabilities and love my Hotter elasticated lace trainers. Blush

Lanique · 02/01/2022 09:59

I have to object to Stan Smiths being seen as 'mum trainers' - they're too cool and insouciant. In a recent trip to Paris I saw lads of them being worn on the street and let's not forget how fucking cool Phoebe Philo looks here.

Vejas are cool. People like to sneer on them here because they're seen as influencer trainers but they are still seen as cool. Ditto Air and Grace.

Mum trainers to me are any you would buy in Mountain Warehouse, or Sketchers. Or another type are those 'fake' cool trainers by Boden, Carvela etc, ideally with rainbow or diamanté stripes on them.

Excuse typos - in a hurry Blush

Lanique · 02/01/2022 10:05

By the way my barometer of cool is from the viewpoint of a 46 year old mum.

My dds do sometimes wear Stan Smiths but wouldn't be seen dead in Veja or A&G.

PROPERLY cool trainers seem to be Nine Blazes, Dunks, Jordans (although apparently Jordans have become too basic now, as have Air Force 1s), and those big chunky New Balance ones.
