What would you say the mum boot of trainers looks like?

It's called 'Style and Beauty' but that doesn't mean there are set rules about what defines either style or beauty.

Any one of us could take a pair of boots or trainers and put our own stamp on them. Some of us would look better than others, perhaps, but that wouldn't be down to just the boots or trainers and it certainly wouldn't be anything to do with being mums.

Floisme · 23/12/2021 08:56

Its perfectly reasonable for the people who post here to be interested in what is stylish not practical.

Indeed and you would have a point if the op had asked, 'Which are the most stylish / fashionable trainer brands at the moment?' or even 'Which brands should I avoid if I want to look fashionable?' Instead they chose a parenting website to equate being a mum with having no style.

What's more, if she had really believed the two are incompatible then she wouldn't have chosen this board to ask the question, so I can only assume it was an attempt to signal, 'I'm not that kind of mum, oh no not me'. Classic cool girl behaviour with a bit of neediness on the side.

OverByYer · 23/12/2021 09:04

Exactly it’s possible to frame the question without being offensive to others

CousinGregg · 23/12/2021 09:45

Sketchers are naff and unfashionable, if you wear them and don’t care, good for you mum or not.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/12/2021 09:48

I’m a mum, and I don’t find the phrase “mum boots” to be remotely offensive. It’s a phrase to describe dull, practical boots which most of us have a pair of.

It doesn’t mean that mums can’t be stylish. And it’s no different to “dad jeans” or “dad bod”. Not offensive to me, at least.

The100thHoliday · 23/12/2021 09:50

I’m pretty sure my commute-to-work footwear is the ‘mum boots’ of trainers. Black, woven, slip-on Skechers. High fashion they aint, but fuck me they’re comfy!

IvorCutler · 23/12/2021 10:15

I’m not offended either @ShirleyPhallus. Stereotypes are irritating but I’m comfortable enough with my style choices not to give a toss what anyone thinks. I think if people are happy and confident in whatever they’re wearing they’ll always look good.

Very good point @Floisme. Perhaps describing themselves as having an 'eclectic' style. 😂

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 27/12/2021 21:53

I love trainers. I have vejas, supergas, Nike courts, Nike airforce, Reebok Prince, air and grace…..

I don’t care if they are mum trainers or not - if they are fun, colourful and comfortable that’s all I want!

Maybe even 'quirky'?
Legoninjago1 · 27/12/2021 22:01

Never heard of mum boots but if they're meant to be dull, practical and good value for money i don't know why anyone would say Veja or Superga! I actually think they're quite cool and def not good value!

XmasOnTheBeach · 28/12/2021 07:15

Agreed. Veja are InstaMum trainers. They're uncomfortable and look a bit try hard. I nearly bought them as I was hoping to up my style ante but have foot issues so went with frumpy Skechers Grin. I know they Skechers aren't really good for foot support but they do help. Saying that, Sport Direct have some mega trendy Skechers for younger girls, so what do I know.

glimpsing · 28/12/2021 07:30

You get the accusation of 'trying to hard' or the 'frumpy' when you are a certain age. I am more of the 'don't give much of one' persuasion. Whatever I wear on my feet has to be comfortable. I run which helps me be confident, slim and fit which in turn helps me feel I look good in most things IMO. If the shoes kill my feet they're out because it might impinge on the running. This has come with age. I put strength and fitness over appearance but ironically think I look better for it.

glimpsing · 28/12/2021 07:32

So current favourites are by Ecco and Merrell.Grin

glimpsing · 28/12/2021 07:35

But they're shoes and boots respectively. Not trainers.

FindingMeno · 28/12/2021 07:37

White with any metallic/ sparkly details.

Jacaranda75 · 28/12/2021 07:39

Please tell me Air & Grace are not Mom Trainers 😂

Insert1x20p · 28/12/2021 07:50

Whaaaat? Grin. Veja are so comfortable. I have really wide feet and love them, but I only wear them for walking round town etc, not for actual exercise when I would agree they'd be rubbish.

They probably are a bit try hard but I am teetering on the edge of menopause and not prepared to totally give up yet.

CuttedOutTree · 28/12/2021 07:57

Would you consider these mum boots? Are they frumpy?

[quote pastypirate]I googled mum boots. Google suggests these....

Ahahahah brilliant

VitalsStable · 28/12/2021 08:48

@woodlandarchitect

Skechers.

I remember when I first had Skechers. Aged 14 and they had glitter on the sides and zips instead of laces. This was 2003 Grin

My cousin puked on them by accident….

Are you sure it was an accident and she wasn't trying to save you from a visit by the fashion police?

Haha same here! I also have many pairs of sparkly supergas for summer which probably make me look a little more ridiculous with each passing year but I don't care. Got to have a bit of sparkle!
AmIoldbutdontrealiseit · 30/12/2021 10:22

Just found this thread after posting a thread about Shirley Valentine being 42 and that I wore Converse. Having been told Converse are now the *Mum boot 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’ve worn them for years, pre child too, plus other makes of trainers.
However, my friend did text me and declare that she saw Philip schofield say on This morning that they were the trainers he loves and always wears 😫

TerribleCustomerCervix · 30/12/2021 10:26

Wtf, surely Converse are classics now? I started wearing them 16/17 years ago as a teen, and they’ve never been passé since?!

However I’ve just ordered a pair of Vejas, so clearly cannot be trusted when it comes to shoe advice.

coodawoodashooda · 30/12/2021 10:30

@ShirleyPhallus

Absolutely not vejas, while they’re the typical yummy mummy shoe, they’re not unfashionable in the way that “mum boot” is scathingly said

Sketchers for sure. Hideous things.

What is wrong with sketchers?
