What would you say the mum boot of trainers looks like?

Well I just got some new white trainers from Hotter so I'm pretty sure I win the middle aged woman in comfy shoes race. They actually look alright.

I'm thankful that I have never worn mum boots. Or mom jeans. Or Veja's. They're far too common now. I'm quite happy with my Stan Smiths and my retro inspired New Balance trainers. As for boots, most are knee high and have a high heel. Hardly 'mum boots' Confused
I have new balance and I am pretty damn sure they are mum boots
Craftycorvid · 20/12/2021 22:44

But I have seen many of the younger generation wearing Vejas and Converse, and I feel some of these young people are surely too young to be mums (also, some are male). Also, I wear Vejas and Converse but I am not a mum either.

Stans are totally more common than Vejas. New Balance are on the line, depends on the person and outfit but they absolutely do fall into mum boot territory sorry.

Don’t most things depend on the outfit and look though?
I have vejas and converse and tend to wear them with more smart casual outfits that my fashionable (clumpy and stupidly big) nikes don’t work with.
Then I wear those types with joggers or leggings and slouchy hoodies and some hoops - looking much like a well heeled teenager.

I don’t think anything is necessarily “mum” by definition - the most gorgeous item can be ruined by unsuitable styling and the frumpiest pair of boots can be made a hell of a lot better with a good outfit

antisocialsocialclub · 21/12/2021 08:21

@Floisme

Anyone else remember when the trainer trend was hailed as a game changer, liberating women not only from sore feet but from all those awful stereotypes?
Yes a lot of internalised misogyny still around. I’m not a Mum but not sure why I wouldn’t want to look like one? Most Mums I know are trendy and fashion conscious.
WhatAHexIGotInto · 21/12/2021 08:54

Nothing like a bit of casual sexism and PA judging to pass the evening is there?

Ah yes, some of our more superior posters thrive on it.

My trainers are black leather ones by Ugg, so I'm pretty sure I should be run out of Mumsnet town ...

MsMiaWallace · 21/12/2021 09:30

Surely the ultimate mum boot is the Ugg? Or better still fake Uggs or Rocket Dogs?

MsMiaWallace · 21/12/2021 09:31

I love my Uggs by the way

antisocialsocialclub · 21/12/2021 09:35

I miss my Uggs, although wore mine once when it was icy and comedy fell like I’d slipped on a banana. 🤣 If they had grippy soles they’d be so snuggly in the cold weather. 😊
WineGetsMeThroughIt · 21/12/2021 10:02

Haha, well if my Stans and NB are the equivalent of mum boots, I'm pretty sure they're more stylish and not as "sticky outty" in a bad way as a mum boot. I saw plenty of late teens / early twenties wearing them in my area as well. Just thought they were for everyone really. Got them from Asos which isn't mumsy to me. Needless to say I love them. And I'm a mum lol. But haven't ever been much of a fan of the vejas, plus I hear they're super uncomfortable

BettyTheBadBitch · 21/12/2021 10:37

Yes, agree with the posters questioning why it's deemed so awful to look like a mum, especially on a site called Mumsnet!

That aside, I do know what op means, although I slightly object to the term.

I thinj sketchers go walk would be the ones. Agree though, that New Balance and Vejas are the new school run classics. I also see a lot of DMs and birkenstocks (in the summer obviously). Also see a lot of country attire at my dc school. Dublin and Dubarry seem to be popular choices for footwear among that group.

We are in a commuter town to London but with lots of countryside around, so we do get a bit of a mix.

RampantIvy · 21/12/2021 18:26

@LadyDanburysHat

I would say Skechers. Most of them say 'I have given up on life' I get they are comfortable and are fine for work in busy on your feet environments.
I am willing to bet that if you removed the logos off every brand of trainer you would be surprised at how similar so many different brands appear in looks, even the much maligned on mumsnet skechers.

My skechers trainers don't look very different from my Nike ones apart from the logo.

IsThePopeCatholic · 21/12/2021 18:56

Snidey question, op. Time to grow up.

RampantIvy · 21/12/2021 19:00

Yes it is nasty. Style and Beauty is often used by posters who think they are "cool" to sneer at people who choose less trendy brands.

I am not brand aware at all. I just wear what suits me and what is comfortable, but with a nod to not looking too old fashioned.

MrBoldwood · 21/12/2021 20:06

Skechers
New Balance maybe

Coffeepot72 · 21/12/2021 20:41

Throughout my life I’ve always had awkward feet, no medical conditions, just feet that find a lot of styles uncomfortable for no logical reason, so my footwear has always been tailored towards comfort. However you can get away with this if you choose carefully and keep the rest of your outfit/look up to date. I don’t think people pay much attention to your footwear unless you get it badly wrong!

RampantIvy · 21/12/2021 21:13

I would agree with this. I also have awkward feet.

FunnyCradock · 21/12/2021 23:02

My sons girlfriends (for context - both students, one at a Home Counties 6th form, one at a creative artsy London uni - age 18 & 20) wear converse.
All this only mums wear skinny jeans, converse etc is bollocks.
Fashion is subjective & have we not got to the sensible place in time where it transcends age or parental status?
Wear what you want, not whatever social media or whoever is dictating is the latest trend. If you like it, wear it. And those who judge…well that says more about them than the wearer, does it not?! Hmm

IWasFunBeforeMum · 21/12/2021 23:03

Vejas. Which are ridiculously priced for what they are.

newroundhere · 21/12/2021 23:24

I love my skechers and I don't care what anyone else thinks about them.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 21/12/2021 23:36

Is there such a thing as dad boots? Or dad trainers?

I don’t get this at all. Wear what you like, whatever you feel comfortable in. If that’s a pair of Nike Airforce or sensible Clark’s boots, whatever.

I don’t need to feel vindicated by wearing the same thing as a 19 year old when I’m a 33 year old professional. You can take my Vans and Converse out of my cold, dead hands, thanks.

foxlover47 · 21/12/2021 23:48

I swear I wear my
Hunter
Wellies more than any converse or adidas trainers I've got , hardly ever wear heels
... but I've worn converse since I was young and before a mum
Anyway

christmaskittenincoming · 21/12/2021 23:51

The 'dad' trainer

The mum boot of trainers
Dancingonmoonlight · 22/12/2021 01:29

NB are surely.
I read a post by an American woman recently (maybe it was this forum), that in the US, NB are worn by the retired. She was very surprised to see them being popular among younger age groups here.
I remember her post because I had them in my shopping cart at the time but I pressed empty cart after reading her post!

Dancingonmoonlight · 22/12/2021 01:31

Oh yes they do! Footwear makes or breaks an outfit!
