Would you buy a Hermes bag if you had the money?

If you had enough money for it to be a viable purchase would you buy a Birkin?

It's supposedly the holy grail but just wandered if you would ever consider if you had funds to do so?

I've had a couple Of Evelyne's and a Garden Party.

The leather is sublime and I sold them on anyway. The Evelyne was too similar to a bucket bag mulberry I have and the garden party was too heavy to carry if you put more than a tissue in it.

I've always quite fancied a Kelly though but I don't want to pay the prices and again I think that the whole being on a waiting list then falling off it without being offered one then having to go on it again until your sales assistant 'offers' you one is a bit shit really.

It's clearly because they only want certain 'types' of people carrying their bags - I'm not in their demographic ( too fat ) so I'd never bother anyway.

That said I do have Dior and Chanel and I love them, I also donate regularly to food banks and homeless charities. I was very poor myself at one time and this would have seemed like a crazy thing to spend money on, now I can afford it I have the bag bug and I do get it. Especially with vintage Chanel, the craftsmanship was amazing ( now less so ) and they are also taking the piss with 4/5 price rises a year.

They are clearly trying to get on the same footing as Hermes and it won't happen as their quality control just isn't good enough.

JustJustWhy · 19/12/2021 14:08

You have to "jump through hoops" and be "interviewed" to buy something to carry your Tampax and deodorant around in? I've never heard anything so fucking ludicrous!

MargosKaftan · 19/12/2021 14:13

I wouldn't buy one. They are very heavy, not very practical and look a bit dated at the moment- mind you as a "classic" they will stay around, apart from anything else, they are a clear indication of both wealth and contacts to get one. I would only be buying one to show the world I could buy one, which looks tacky no matter how you try to play it.

TheLadyGrayson · 19/12/2021 14:18

If money was no object, definitely! Probably choose a Kelly over a Birkin though.

This is completely untrue. You can walk into a store and purchase a birkin with no wait. Special orders are by invitation and do involve a wait as they are bespoke pieces.

@metalkprettyoneday

No, I have my eye on these soft leather bags which are made by hand by a woman in my city in her home studio . You can go round and select the colour of the leather , the lining and then she makes it for you. I feel like this is more ‘ luxurious’ than a big brand . And about £200 for a one off unique hand made bag.
Does she have a link ? 💕
stevalnamechanger · 19/12/2021 14:29

@Roselilly36

Total waste of money.
Actually they've been a fantastic investment over the last 10 years 🤣 resale prices are through the roof
ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 19/12/2021 14:32

No, I don't like them and there are so many knock-offs around that they don't have much cachet unless someone examines the stitching or whatever in microscopic detail.

crazyjinglist · 19/12/2021 14:36

God no. I just googled a Birkin bag. It looks like... a bag. And not a particularly nice one. I'd spend about £50 on a leather bag. I cannot imagine why anyone would feel the need to spend more than a couple of hundred at the most. Anything you carry around like that has the potential to get damaged so easily too.

Also this:

I don't get this thing about labels. If something's nice, it's nice regardless of who made it.

I mean... I know that what we choose to spend more or less money on is a matter of taste and personal priorities, but I can't think of many items which have a more 'wtf' mismatch between price and worth (in the sense that the expensive ones are logically no better than the cheaper ones) than designer handbags.

crazyjinglist · 19/12/2021 14:38

Well maybe, but if that were the purpose of buying them, you might as well buy shares instead, or buy a bunch of Birkins and lock them in a safe so they don't get damaged Grin

sansucre · 19/12/2021 14:46

Sure, I'd buy a Birkin although would much prefer an Hermès Constance in cobalt blue alligator with silver hardware.

elvis4nuts · 19/12/2021 16:05

Nope

FindingMeno · 19/12/2021 16:43

Quite honestly I've just looked them up.
I see loads of bags that look like that at jumble sales and charity shops, smelling of mildew and smooshed up old lipstick.
I'd probably only give £2 for one as there's so many more stylish options out there.
My opinion obviously and hope I don't offend.

SparkleWhale · 19/12/2021 16:44

Not keen on them. I'd buy vintage Chanel.

Omicrone · 19/12/2021 16:55

Even if I was a billionaire I don't think I would spend 20 grand on a handbag. Mainly because the mark up is just so ridiculously huge and I would feel like they were laughing at me.

If money were no object I would buy a Chanel classic flap as I do love those, but Chanel are starting to take the piss with their price hikes now as well.

EmmaWoodhousestreehouse · 19/12/2021 17:03

@rhowton

No... I do love Mulberry bags though. Classic and beautiful.
Me too. Mulberry all the way.
XingMing · 19/12/2021 17:13

I wouldn't want to carry an obviously ostentatious bag, but I like some of the stealthier bags. I like some Hermes bags, but can't remember the names, and if my ticket comes up on Euromillions, I might consider a little something from Loewe.

XingMing · 19/12/2021 17:14

Until then, I'll stick with cheap and pre-loved. It generally only has to carry phone, cards and dog poo bags.

humourmepleas · 19/12/2021 20:10
@ShinyHappyPoster thank you this is what I meant.

I know women buy cars too btw but the reason that they're not told how many starving villages their audi 7 or bmw x5 could feed is because men make the decision to buy cars.

And given that a Hermes bag appreciates in value while a car depreciates the moment you drive it home, it's illogical.
I'm not sure about that - I'm a car enthusiast and a man has never decided this for me!

I agree with you on one thing - handbags are on par with watches but not cars. You spend an incredible amount of time in a car (or at least I do) so being in comfort/luxury makes more sense that a bag which is purely to carry items.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one 🤣

OP posts:
UserBot · 19/12/2021 22:16

Why are you asking posters if they'd ever buy a hermes bag?

You rank cars as above handbags but you're asking about buying a hermes? You don't have to explain your rationale here but it is hard to figure out why you're asking.

A designer bag is all about comfort and luxury by the way and a car is practical. Spending far more than is required is a decision which is sometimes not noticed (cars) and sometimes questioned and berated (bags)

UserBot · 19/12/2021 22:17

''I'm not sure about that - I'm a car enthusiast and a man has never decided this for me!''

I didn't say that men make this decision for women. I pointed out that the decision to buy a car is not questioned.

Lookingoutside · 19/12/2021 22:56

No. I don’t like them. Would love a Louis Capucine in black and a large Christian Dior book tote in blue.

And a Fendi peekaboo in taupe and a Loewe puzzle in pink.

Thank you Santa!!! Smile

tzarine · 20/12/2021 02:47

absolutely not
all they say is "i have an hermes bag & i am an idiot bc my worth is based on an object"

i'll spend £1,000 on a bag & donate the rest to medecins sans frontieres

thebabessavedme · 20/12/2021 09:17

This is an interesting question for me right now, I'm 60 soon and my dh has asked if there is anything I would like (not Hermes price territory though Grin) I have been considering a LV Neverfull and have looked into buying one, price is ok but honestly, I think I'm going away from 'designer' things as I get older, I have have some lovely bags, loewe/mulberry/jimmy choo etc and tbh I'm not sure I will ever need another bag, diamonds on the other hand............Grin!

Some people have owned their Birkins for over 30 years, long before they were widely recognised on the street and the brand became cheapened by influencers etc? I've had my first Birkin for well over twenty years, donate to charity and have worked in developing countries as a doctor. Am I an idiot or do I simply like designer bags and purchase whatever I like thatfits with my lifestyle?
