Would you buy a Hermes bag if you had the money?

If you had enough money for it to be a viable purchase would you buy a Birkin?

It's supposedly the holy grail but just wandered if you would ever consider if you had funds to do so?

As much as I love bags it would be a no from me their are way nicer bags that cost less most people buy birkins to show off their also pretty old fashioned and ugly for the price

MrsMadderRose · 19/12/2021 10:48

No. I might pay a few hundred (if I had it) for a bag if I really loved it and it was well made and would last a lifetime. But not thousands! For one thing I’d probably absent-mindedly leave it on the bus (though I suppose in this fantasy rich lifestyle I’d be less likely to go on a bus). And I’d be worried about getting mugged for it.

ExquisitelyDecorated · 19/12/2021 10:48

No, I'm not into designer bags at all, I work in a very affluent area with lots of very well dressed people but I have no idea whether their bags have come from Hermes or Accessorise.

CariadWelshcake · 19/12/2021 10:59

@metalkprettyoneday

No, I have my eye on these soft leather bags which are made by hand by a woman in my city in her home studio . You can go round and select the colour of the leather , the lining and then she makes it for you. I feel like this is more ‘ luxurious’ than a big brand . And about £200 for a one off unique hand made bag.
I use a woman in Romania.

Corys Bags

I’ve never been disappointed by anything she’s made for me.

Villanelle17 · 19/12/2021 11:05

No as don't love them.

toddybell · 19/12/2021 11:07

Only if I had the lifestyle to go with. I don't think it has quite the wow factor with it being on my arm, as I walk out of my semi, get into my Honda CRV and walk into Sainsbury's to do my weekly shop!

rhowton · 19/12/2021 11:13

No... I do love Mulberry bags though. Classic and beautiful.

ufucoffee · 19/12/2021 11:16

No because there are lots and lots of bags that look identical. And I don't like them.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 11:16

Mulberry is still my most favourite. And I can happily wear it as I go about my really very mundane (but contented) daily life.

Newduvet · 19/12/2021 11:18

I can never understand the need people have to show, very blatantly, how much something cost. Designer labels are such a status symbol for so many. Brands are mostly all about creating perceptions to impress others, fitting in, validation and prestige. Look what I can afford. LOOK!! DID YOU SEEEE?

Gonnagetgoing · 19/12/2021 11:19

No. I hate the look of them and think they’re overrated.

ShinyHappyPoster · 19/12/2021 11:22

Yes because handbags were one of the best financial investments of the last year. Their value rose faster than property, art, etc. It's fascinating and it's not usually the case but it's why for the first time, I'm seriously considering buying one.

Gonnagetgoing · 19/12/2021 11:22

@Newduvet - it depends though. The designer bags I like and have (small Fendi, balenciaga, Loewe, Stella McCartney) I always choose for minimal or no metal wear and no logos.

If you want to do blingy and have lots of metal tags or logos then you can.

CeibaTree · 19/12/2021 11:29

I wouldn't as I don't particularly like them, I would buy a couple of Chanel bags if I had the funds.

humourmepleas · 19/12/2021 11:30

@UserBot314 totally disagree if you're a car enthusiast cars drive completely differently and you can get a different type of joy from driving a sports care than a 10k run around for example

No need to worry about waiting lists, ladies - there's a second-hand one on Farfetch (appropriately enough!) for a mere £261,555.

There is no situation or level of income at which I would be willing to pay that for a fashion accessory. I would get much more enjoyment from playing Lady Bountiful and giving random homeless people £100!

UserBot314 · 19/12/2021 11:33

@humourmepleas yeh but men aren't forced to justify their expenditure on cars.

They're just allowed to enjoy their car.

Anybody who starts a bag thread is asked how can they live with themselves when people are starving.

Anyway................. if you buy a bag, enjoy it.

HelloDulling · 19/12/2021 11:36

If you’d asked me ten years ago, I would have said yes, absolutely. Now, I’m not sure. I rarely use a big bag, just a cross body with space for phone, wallet, keys, hand cream, small notebook. I still think the Birkin is stunning though.

JaceLancs · 19/12/2021 11:44

No but I would love a Chanel bag

toddybell · 19/12/2021 11:44

@Hyperion100

My partner works for a lux fashion brand. After finding out what their margins on production are, I'll never buy any luxury brands ever again.

Please say more!

Yy I agree with this. To generalise, cars and watches are seen as 'serious', worthwhile investments and purchases. Handbags are treated as frivolous but they are actually a better investment than watches and cars atm.

UserBot314 · 19/12/2021 11:58

@ShinyHappyPoster thank you this is what I meant.

I know women buy cars too btw but the reason that they're not told how many starving villages their audi 7 or bmw x5 could feed is because men make the decision to buy cars.

And given that a Hermes bag appreciates in value while a car depreciates the moment you drive it home, it's illogical.

oviraptor21 · 19/12/2021 12:00

No. I would never buy anything where you're paying more for the name than the product. So that rules out most handbags.

FindingMeno · 19/12/2021 12:03

No.
If I ever have that much money and couldn't think of anything better to do with it than buy a bag, I'd give the money to charity.

HanSB · 19/12/2021 12:13

Yes simply because they are a good investment. Sought after second hand Hermes bags can go for more than double what you pay. A Chanel bag I bought for 2.5k 8 years ago is now worth over 6k. I have a Hermes Constance which was purchased 2 years ago for under 5k and I would expect to sell for about 8k now.
