Jump suits are never flattering

I've hankered after a good one for a while, but keep sending them back because of the impossibility of getting into and out of them for a wee on a night out I have thought they looked good though.

I was out last night in a group and chatting to what I've always thought of as a decent, mild mannered, kind, moderately interesting and dull (in equal measure) middle aged man.

Out of nowhere (we weren't talking about clothes at all) he suddenly said "jumpsuits are never flattering". I challenged him a bit, I agree there are plenty of bad ones but they're not all bad and some are really good. No, he was adamant, jumpsuits suit no one.

I was amazed to hear he had an opinion on women's clothing TBH, but is he right?

He's right

Bavarois · 18/12/2021 14:57

Wrote a big post but deleting it cos it boils down to - why would I care what some random man thinks?

Also you obviously don't think this as you 'have thought they looked good though' so you know they can look good? Why give this headspace?

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 18/12/2021 14:58

I never wear mine as it is too tummy-ish.
But not everyone has a tummy like mine

lomoloko · 18/12/2021 14:59

They all look terrible on me but my DSIL looks amazing in them: sophisticated and casual and glam all at once. I look like a welder.

Peakedtoosoon · 18/12/2021 15:00

The vast majority of suff on MN is a waste of headspace surely? It was just interesting to hear such a firmly held view from someone I didn't expect to be even mildly interested in the subject.

S&B is for asking opinions on clothes. That's what I'm doing.

Completely depends on a person's shape in my opinion.

Also, 'flattering' isn't everyone's priority. It's generally one of mine but lots of people want to have fun with clothes and different silhouettes, and whether something is flattering isn't always a deciding factor.

grey12 · 18/12/2021 15:03

They are not flattering on anyone.... if skinny people look like they put on a bit of weight everyone else should stay 10 miles away!!! And they're not even practical!! Confused

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 18/12/2021 15:04

I agree with him. Jumpsuits are awful IMO. I was once at a 40th birthday party in a club. A beautiful classy woman was there wearing a jumpsuit. She got on the dance floor and then turned around and the jumpsuit was the most unflattering thing from the back. Made her bum look flat and saggy and about 3 times as big as it actually was.

I also know a plus size influencer who consistently wears this one particular khaki jumpsuit. She clearly loves it, but in person it gives her a camel toe and a saggy belly and bum. It honestly looks atrocious.

Forgot to say first woman was about a size 8, so hardly had a big bum at all. This jumpsuit was just terrible from the back. An angle which most people will never see of themselves which really should be the deciding factor in the whole thing.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/12/2021 15:12

Naw, don’t agree, but each to their own. I have a few now as I love them. Like any piece of clothing, some styles will work better than others depending on your shape. And if someone doesn’t like mine, so what, they can kiss my jumpsuit covered ass, lol

OverByYer · 18/12/2021 15:14

I look great in mine and couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks.

Elieza · 18/12/2021 15:16

If you have a pert bottom and do not have rolls of flab they look fine.

If you have those issues I’d suggest something more drapey to hide said rolls and saggy ass (waist to under the bum looks long in a jumpsuit and therefore makes a bum look saggy).

I never wear them as I don’t have the figure.

CorrBlimeyGG · 18/12/2021 15:17

It's about the only thing I consistently look good in, from both directions! Probably does make me look a bit curvier, but that's a good thing. My partner loves me in them too.

dustandfluf · 18/12/2021 15:18

I don't give a shit what any man thinks of the clothes I wear. I wear them because I like them. I wear a lot of jumpsuits. It's my go to outfit for weddings and special occasions. Sometimes I look a twat. Other times I look great. Sometimes I feel a twat, other times I feel amazing! Mostly when I'm wearing a jumpsuit I feel amazing so that's all that matters to me.

Issues? Hide? So women who are larger should hide their bodies? And be ashamed of themselves as you clearly think it's an 'issue'.
Luredbyapomegranate · 18/12/2021 15:22

They can look terrific.. but they are often v unflattering.

Lottapianos · 18/12/2021 15:23

'Also, 'flattering' isn't everyone's priority'

Love this. You can adore an outfit or colour or look that doesn't particular 'flatter' you, but you find it fun or joyful or whatever

I've never worn a jumpsuit because of the weeing issue, but have definitely seen some women look great in them. Most recent example would be Cynthia Nixon in the burgundy jumpsuit in the third episode of And Just Like That...

AuntMasha · 18/12/2021 15:24

If my jumpsuit repels opinionated middle-aged men, then so much the better.

Thanks for making me laugh. @lomoloko. Great comment. 😀

I don't disagree with you but I've never heard this particular man be "opinionated" before. He was wearing hiking gear in the pub Grin

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/12/2021 15:30

I've got a long torso and am very big in the hips so struggle with jumpsuits or anything one piece but not 'fit and flare'. I think it really does depend on your proportions.

doadeer · 18/12/2021 15:30

I love them - find super comfy and I don't find going to the toilet an issue. I.also find them so nice to wear and I can move around.

DivanInspiration · 18/12/2021 15:32

I disagree, but I do think they can be cut badly and be an awkward leg length. If you find one that fits well it can look really stylish.

Exactly! I also like the way that flattering is a code word for "thinner". Cos God forbid a fat person offend the delicate eyes of the general public.

Personally I don't like them for me because of the whole practicality of going for a wee.

Jenjenn · 18/12/2021 15:37

95% of jumpsuits look terrible. I however own the perfect one (for me): heavy black crepe, wrap front that shows a bit of skin but no cleavage iyswim, wide side tie belt to hide tummy, short sleeves and wide slightly cropped legs. I have worn it an absolute ton- Christmas, anniversary meals, smart work events, interviews. My holy grail outfit.
