Jump suits are never flattering

I've hankered after a good one for a while, but keep sending them back because of the impossibility of getting into and out of them for a wee on a night out I have thought they looked good though.

I was out last night in a group and chatting to what I've always thought of as a decent, mild mannered, kind, moderately interesting and dull (in equal measure) middle aged man.

Out of nowhere (we weren't talking about clothes at all) he suddenly said "jumpsuits are never flattering". I challenged him a bit, I agree there are plenty of bad ones but they're not all bad and some are really good. No, he was adamant, jumpsuits suit no one.

I was amazed to hear he had an opinion on women's clothing TBH, but is he right?

I like them. But I don’t dress for middle aged men. I can be a bit gender nonconformist and have been accused of being a lesbian based on my shoe and clothes choices Hmm

Divebar2021 · 18/12/2021 18:03

I like boiler suits and jumpsuits and I pretty much don’t give a shit about other peoples opinion of them. If I only wore clothes that flattered me in a conventional way I’d spend my life in pencil skirts, wrap dresses and heels. #Yawn. We’ve moved on from Trinny and Susanna’s rules haven’t we?

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 18/12/2021 18:09

I’ve seen people look amazing in them.

I’ve also seen people look like, well, yes, as a PP suggested, welders. But that’s definitely not universal.

Classica · 18/12/2021 18:11

I don't mind men having an opinion on women's fashion as long as it's not said in a horrible way e.g, 'I hate your jumpsuit'. But as a general musing I'm not bothered. I hate the Hawaiian shirt trend that seems to come around for men every decade or so and I'm sure I'd mention it. After checking there were no Hawaiian shirts in my vicinity!

Mercurial123 · 18/12/2021 18:17

I'm thinking of buying this for summer

I think they'll be a thing the next generation looks back at and says, wow, they were so funny, why did people dress like that? But people will definitely be saying that about me right now in bright leggings and hoodies, and I like that particular look. I'll also say that I look terrible in them (and also dungarees) so don't wear them so maybe I'm bitter. But people also say stuff and then later realise they don't actually have a strong opinion when they think about it. So I wouldn't take it too seriously.

Bearnecessity · 18/12/2021 23:15

I have one that gets a huge amount of compliments every time I wear it, patterned from Mint Velvet....

I don't think people will look back and laugh. They wore jumpsuits in the 60's, 70's & 80's. It was very fashionable. I think it's just the 90's & 00's when they fell out of fashion. Playsuits came back in the later 00's thanks largely to Kate Moss's Topshop collab. So with that timeline we have a good few decades of wear left in them!
Musmerian · 19/12/2021 00:06

I’m 5 ft 2 and have huge boobs and am a size 14. I have a black jersey v neck jumpsuit from Biden that is very flattering. Pub man can bog off.

AlannaOfTrebond · 19/12/2021 00:36

I flipping love them.
I have summer ones and winter weight full on boiler suits. My friends who are 20 years younger say I should wear them more as they are super cool.
I refuse to listen to some random blokes opinion. I'll wear whatever the hell I like.

Craftycorvid · 19/12/2021 00:36

So, a man who wears hiking gear to the pub mansplains fashion to a woman? I’ve a male friend who once, in a special kindly sort of voice, explained to me that ‘men don’t like’ certain items of female attire because (drum roll) they are ‘not sexy’. I replied (in an equally special and kindly tone of voice) that women do not dress exclusively for the male gaze.

antisocialsocialclub · 19/12/2021 01:34

I read somewhere a few years ago that men didn't find them sexy. Which would make me automatically want to buy one

Same, makes me love them even more 😂

IglesiasPiggl · 19/12/2021 03:13

Jumpsuits are harder to get right than other things but it can be done. I love jumpsuits and have several in wide leg, made of ponte, which is a heavy gague jersey. I am average height with no tummy and a bit of muscular roundness in the bum, and get lots of compliments when I wear mine. I think they are harder to pull off for apple shapes though.

Youaremypenguin · 19/12/2021 03:24

I love them. I'm a pear shape, tall and curvy. Like everything it's the fit that matters. I have a couple and get (genuine) compliments Everytime I wear one.

ditavonteesed · 19/12/2021 07:30

I have a jumpsuit from Lucy and yak, well actually it's more of a boiler suit and it's the most flattering thing I own, I look and feel amazing in it.
Several times women have actually stopped me to compliment me, that has never happened before in my whole life.

I fell like I'm in the avengers in it.

Also it makes me happy, people should wear clothes that make them happy and men should not offer opinions on women's clothes.

ColleysMill · 19/12/2021 07:38

Pfft I live in dungarees and often go for a jumpsuit for a night out or posh do - the ones from Hot Squash are my favourites.

It has been said though that I do have a slightly unique style (quite 70s/90s indie rock like) and my friends say I pull things off that they never could. Similarly I could never be as polished as they are but I'm happy with what I wear.

Someone with confidence will always be attractive even if they are in a bin bag,not that we dress for other people.

So yes pub man can bog off. I'm 43 and I am going to wear what I like.

De88 · 19/12/2021 07:41

There's a right jumpsuit for everyone out there, those who found them unflattering just haven't found theirs yet Grin

gunnersgold · 19/12/2021 07:42

That isn't true but I think you need to be an hourglass with a flat stomach . They look great on me 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

HollowTalk · 19/12/2021 07:51

What about Anneka Rice?

StarfishDish · 19/12/2021 07:53

@lomoloko

They all look terrible on me but my DSIL looks amazing in them: sophisticated and casual and glam all at once. I look like a welder.
@lomoloko Same! My SIL would look amazing in a bin bag though. Xmas Grin
IamGusFring · 19/12/2021 09:34

@HollowTalk

What about Anneka Rice?
No not doing it either . Her fame with these grew from perving on her arse as she ran on the original 1980s show . She actually has little in the way of an arse.
Jump suits are never flattering
StCharlotte · 19/12/2021 10:05

No he wasn't right. They look great on many and shit on many.

I never considered one for me (bit of an apple) but then Siobhán McSweeney who is similar build to me looked great in hers on The Great Pottery Throwdown so for a nanosecond I considered trying one. But then the toilet logistics put me off but that was the only reason.

astorsback · 19/12/2021 10:09

I have several and I love them!

It helps to have a good quality material, which drapes and is quite heavy.

I have cadual and formal ones in navy, black and brown/black.

I have a straight body shape, high waist, good bum and thin legs though which i think helps.

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 10:11

I think women like jumpsuits and men don’t. That’s my sweeping generalisation 😃

I do like them. Usual caveats.

Lanique · 19/12/2021 10:23

I think they're great. I own several. I'm tall and slim and they actually look better on me than dresses IMO.

Anyone that's watched Sex Education and seen Jean Milburn rocking that teal one would agree they can look amazing.
