Jump suits are never flattering

I've hankered after a good one for a while, but keep sending them back because of the impossibility of getting into and out of them for a wee on a night out I have thought they looked good though.

I was out last night in a group and chatting to what I've always thought of as a decent, mild mannered, kind, moderately interesting and dull (in equal measure) middle aged man.

Out of nowhere (we weren't talking about clothes at all) he suddenly said "jumpsuits are never flattering". I challenged him a bit, I agree there are plenty of bad ones but they're not all bad and some are really good. No, he was adamant, jumpsuits suit no one.

I was amazed to hear he had an opinion on women's clothing TBH, but is he right?

Woman at work wore one and it was so tight across her stomach arse and fanny, you could see her camel toe!!

MoltonSilver · 18/12/2021 15:40

I like the idea of them but I've never managed to find one that works on me.

Floisme · 18/12/2021 15:45

Also, 'flattering' isn't everyone's priority. It's generally one of mine but lots of people want to have fun with clothes and different silhouettes, and whether something is flattering isn't always a deciding factor.

I agree with this. Flattering is a factor for me but it's not the only one. As it happens, I don't have a jumpsuit but I've nearly bought one and it was my ageing bladder that put me off as much as anything.

And I have no objection to men expressing an opinion about clothes, in fact I quite enjoy talking about it with them because they often have such a different viewpoint. Doesn't mean I always listen Grin

MrNapkinHead · 18/12/2021 15:46

I agree with him, but he was a rude, sexist idiot for saying it to you.

No he wasnt. I wasn't wearing one, he's never seen me wearing one and as far as I could see there was no one wearing one in the pub. No idea what set him off.

I read somewhere a few years ago that men didn't find them sexy. Which would make me automatically want to buy one. I had one from Universal Standard/J Crew which I wore for years. Super comfortable but not very flattering.

Floisme · 18/12/2021 15:54

Why is it always rude and sexist for a man to express an opinion about clothes?
I guess if it came out of the blue it might feel a bit odd and, if he;d been pointing at a woman in a jumpsuit and going 'Eww' or 'Phwoar' then I'd agree it was odious behaviour. But I don't see the issue with men noticing women's fashion and women's clothing and expressing a view. I often have opinions about what men wear. You should hear me and Mr Flo sometimes!

talkalarm · 18/12/2021 16:01

I look brilliant in mine, they're much more flattering that everything else I own

crazyjinglist · 18/12/2021 16:01

I disagree entirely. I had been wanting a jumpsuit for ages, had never owned one and didn't know if they'd look good on me. I bought a lovely simply-cut black one from the White Company and it's one of the most flattering things I own.

The man sounds like an arse, making random unprompted pronouncements like that about women's clothes. I wouldn't set any store by any man's opinion about women's clothes unless they worked in fashion tbh.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 18/12/2021 16:05

I don't think anyone looks good in them unless you're above average height, long slim limbs and no tummy.

So about 1% of the population (

Somebodylikeyew · 18/12/2021 16:14

I couldn’t give a shit if a man thinks i look good in something. I do think people are being a bit disingenuous on the “flattering” front- surely we all want clothes that suit us and the fact is that some items suit some body shapes more than others.

Jumpsuits ARE especially hard to get right I think. They are often unflattering from the front, but even when someone finds one that suits them from the front they still look awful from the back. Whatever weight or size the woman is, their bum always looks wide and saggy in a jumpsuit!

I’d love to be proved wrong though as despite all the above i quite fancy one 😁

Marchingredsoldiers · 18/12/2021 16:21

I love them. But I think there is only a tiny percentage of people who look good in them. I know that will never include me sadly.

LetHimHaveIt · 18/12/2021 16:30

I don't understand some of these comments. Boilersuits made of unforgiving material don't look good on anyone except the very slim, while playsuits only look good on 25-year-olds with excellent legs. But jumpsuits can be flattering. I've got a drapey one and, although I'm overweight, I look pretty good in it.

Cam2020 · 18/12/2021 16:34

That's me! I looked great from the front but sadly I have no arse so the back
looked horrible.

Tricky to pull off but if people feel good in them, that's what's most important.

ChristmasRobins · 18/12/2021 16:35

They look terrible on me but DD looks amazing in hers- I think it’s a question of getting the proportions right.

IamGusFring · 18/12/2021 16:39

I know what he means . Look at Tess Daley in this - from the front amazing , from the back 😬😬😬😬

It's that bit at the back at the top of your legs /start of your bum ? What is it called again ?

Jump suits are never flattering
sHREDDIES19 · 18/12/2021 16:43

I’ve got a few abs I think they suit me well. I’m only 5ft 4, very slim, perhaps that helps? Certain clothing looks better on slimmer bodies, whilst I think a wrap dress looks lovely on bigger sizes but ridiculous on me with my small chest!

Somebodylikeyew · 18/12/2021 16:45

That’s EXACTLY the problem i mean from behind. And if Tess has it, I’m pretty sure most of us do!
fellrunner85 · 18/12/2021 16:47

I love jumpsuits and think I look good in them, but admittedly being very slim helps a lot.
That said, one of my friends who is very much not-slim got married in one recently and looked absolutely fucking incredible. So perhaps it's not about size at all, but about finding one that fits, in decent fabric that doesn't pull, and checking the view from the back Grin

ColdShouldersWarmTummy · 18/12/2021 16:55

My pilates instructor looks great in them. Me, less so 😂

Floisme · 18/12/2021 16:56

Why do you think that? Sometimes I want my clothes to flatter my body shape but, if it means spending most of my life in straight leg trousers or a knee length, A line skirt then no thanks - I'd be bored senseless.

Sometimes I'm drawn to clothes that make me feel like Katharine Hepburn or Grace Kelly or Cary Grant or Fran Lebowitz. It's basically a bit of fantasy and yes, that might be childish but I don't see it as any more so than only wearing things that show off my waist.

cocktailclub · 18/12/2021 16:58

I have one from Phase 8 and it's strangely very flattering. I'd never really considered one before and only tried it on in desperation looking for an outfit for an event. I've had it four years now and always get compliments

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 18/12/2021 17:46

I think they can look bloody fabulous, Gillian Anderson in sex education wears them a lot and she looks great

lindyloo57 · 18/12/2021 17:49

I have 4 jumpsuits, they have to be a good fit around the waist , and be a bit fitted on the bum , I've sent a quite a few back as some look really bad from the back view.

AuntMasha · 18/12/2021 17:54

I am taller than average and slim. I like myself in them, but you have to shop around for one that’s flattering. I don’t like boilersuits - they remind me of my Dad’s overalls which he used to wear when checking drains and sewers.
