How many bags do you own?

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 10:47

Commented on another thread that I ‘only’ own 4 bags and someone commented implying that that was excessive. Btw I wasn’t complaining, just trying to say I own what I feel I need/ use and no more.
The U.K. average is apparently 14 and most people I know own a lot more. I do not believe that 4 is excessive at all - more a case of a bored poster hoping to start a bun fight. But I am curious now as to how many bags other people own and how many of those do you use regularly?
Mine are:

  • 1 brown cross body bag for daily use
  • 1 smartish rucksack
  • 2 clutch bags: I black, 1 cobalt blue

I used to have about 50, now I have under 10.

That poster was being a dick.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 17/12/2021 10:55

Actually having counted I have 11. I use 3 or 4 of them a lot. Another 4 a little less often & 3 hardly ever, because I’ve not got much opportunity to go ‘out out’ these days.

Bigbum562021 · 17/12/2021 10:57

I've got my normal blue and cream plastic/fake leather handbag which I use most days, bought from a charity shop for £2.00, there's a huge gorgeous black and red plastic and fake fur hand bag my hubby bought me in 2008 for £20.00 and I've got a hilariously funny silver plastic and pink fake fur back back, bought from B&M for about £7.00 which is more for kids/teenagers than adults...I'm 56... for holidays! But I don't have the need for any more! However, if other people want to collect them and have 414 etc. then good on them as I have a collection of teddies/plushies, book marks and Keyrings!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 17/12/2021 10:57

Sorry, I’m feeling unwell and got the maths a little muddled there...that should say I use 4 of them a lot.

evilharpy · 17/12/2021 10:57

I have literally no idea. Definitely more than 20. Possibly more than 30.

I'm assuming the other thread where someone told you 4 was excessive is not in Style & Beauty!

baublebuns · 17/12/2021 10:58

4 bags for general use, and 3 evening bags such as clutch/small cross body bag.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 17/12/2021 10:59

And honestly, I really detest the way people think they can lecture women on what they choose to spend their hard earned money on! Nobody goes around berating men for being heavily into their very expensive hobbies (cycling, golf, motor cars, whatever). It’s only women who aren’t actually allowed, in some people’s minds, to just fucking enjoy themselves collecting things that make them happy!!

Smarshian · 17/12/2021 11:00

I’m not sure exactly but around 15-20 I think. I have a couple of holdalls (do they count?) 3 rucksacks, maybe 5-6 cross body bags of various sizes, 3 shoulder bags of various sizes and a couple of clutch bags.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 17/12/2021 11:13

Way too many I'm afraid, and they're all designer. It's my 'thing'. Think I currently have 4 x Mulberry, 4 x LV and a Gucci. Eek that sounds really bad. But I use them all regularly and anything which hasn't been used in a while gets sold.

Inmypjsagain · 17/12/2021 11:22

I saw the comment on that thread OP and I was shocked! I have over 50 bags, not excessive in my circle of friends but seems a lot compared to these threads! Hoping someone will come along with more soon…!

That’s excluding luggage and weekend bag, not sure how many of those I have? Probably around 10? 🤷🏼‍♀️

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 11:28

@evilharpy, no it wasn’t on Style & Beauty! How did you guess? 😆

@Inmypjsagain I was shocked too. Think they were taking the piss. I know several people with around 50 bags and while it would be a lot for me, I don’t think it’s a crazy amount. I have a small home and minimal tendencies so it just wouldn’t be an option for me anyway. So I have just got into a habit of ‘less is more’.

Actually some of these comments have made me realise I also own three suitcases (shared with DH). Better not mention that on the other post as the poster might faint from shock! 😉

Completely agree! If women want a new dress/ bag/ shoes or to get their hair/ nails/ tan done it is often seen as a frivolous waste of money. I personally have a fairly small capsule wardrobe of pieces to last, and get a good haircut but not fussed about tan/ nails. However, it is none of my business what other people spend their money on. And I’ve had it myself too: people that own 5 or more times the amount of clothes I do, criticising the money I have spent on a top or whatever, whilst ignoring that the top will last me years and their whole wardrobe of cheaper items costs much more than mine. And I’m not even talking designer stuff, I’m thinking more Boden sort of prices. I can’t get too worked up about what other people spend their money on

Suitcases don't count OP. It's not like you take them out with you every week is it!

No, I wish! They generally just live under the bed, gathering dust

Can someone link to the thread? I consider myself to be minimalist and have around 10 bags. I really like bags and consider then to be a piece of art / design creativity rather than a functional accessory.

Tal45 · 17/12/2021 11:38

Maybe they thought you meant 4 designer handbags? 4 doesn't seem huge at all, I can't imagine 14 personally but 4 doesn't seem huge and I don't even own a handbag/clutch or anything like that.

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 11:41

@Tal45 quite possible but I specifically said not designer, so if that’s the case perhaps they should’ve read my post properly before commenting.

@OneRingToRuleThemAll hopefully this works:

I have one. It's quite large and black and cost less than £40 from Accessorise a couple of years ago. I do have two tiny ones that emerge for weddings, and they were less than a tenner each. Some people like bags and some are so lazy that they can't be bothered to move everything over 😀.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 17/12/2021 11:41

Even if they are designer bags, why is that actually excessive? Most of my bags are designer. I love them. They’re beautifully made and bring me a lot of joy.

Wagsandclaws · 17/12/2021 11:42

Erm bags are also my 'thing' Blush

I have 17 Aspinal, 3 mulberry, 2 ysl, 2 Dior, 5 Chanel, 8 hill and friends ( I prefer these to mulberry as they are designed by their ex designer Emma hill and better quality ), a few lk bennet and mint velvet , 2 Rebecca minkoff,, 2 tori burch, 2 Chloe, 2 apatchy london ( they are Bottega cassette bag leather dupes - very nice as I couldn't bring myself to part with 3k for a bag of the moment and these are around £200 each although one was half price in the sale. )

I do use them all to varying degrees - my favourites are my Chanel 19's in grey and indigo and I also love my lady diors ( 2 of those as well ) I use mostly my Chloe,
Tori burch and aspinal though.

I have only bought one high end bag brand new and that was my lady Dior in the summer in the blue tapestry print. It was and is such a work of art.

I buy new and used aspinal in the sales and on eBay.

I've got two well organised oak and glass cabinets that I use to store them in, I don't store them in their dust bags as I like to be able to see them. I do love bags, even lower end cheaper ones ( I bought a fluffy ostrich feather one from primark recently too ).

I probably have in excess of 50 bags, quite a few high end and mid range but also some cheaper ones. I bloody love bags 😍

BrennieGirl · 17/12/2021 11:42

At a guess I have 70+ bags. They range from mid range ‘designer’ ones to Primark. I’ve had some of them over 20 years. I haven’t used some of them for years but I know that I will use them again. I tend to use 3/4 on rotation for a few weeks then get bored and swap them for something different. I have a clear out about once a year and offer them to my sisters and nieces. I like to have different types/sized bags but also different colours to go with whatever I’m wearing.

I wouldn’t judge anyone for having one bag or 100 bags. Whatever floats your boat. Although I would get bored with just 1 bag!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 17/12/2021 11:48

Oh wow @Wagsandclaws, I bow down to your bag collection!! I would love a Chanel.

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 11:53

@HuntingoftheSnark I relate to the laziness of having to swap bags! Whenever I’ve done it in the past, I always end up failing to swap something important over.

OP posts:
Inmypjsagain · 17/12/2021 11:53

@EssexLioness I’d love to be minimalist with bags but I have no self control!!! And I agree that suitcases don’t count!

@Wagsandclaws 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 The Chanel 19s are my favourite bag ever I think, I thought I would love the Boy forever but the 19 wins! I have the cassette bag and I’ve worn it so much but agree it’s not worth the price. I’ve never bought aspinal or Tory birch though. Your display also sounds great, I wish there was a way they could be kept in dust bags and look pretty. My most used is probably my Chanel tote and Goyard tote- I have the Chloe drew and Faye but found they haven’t worn that well (grubby quickly and quite floppy?) so interesting to hear Chloe falls in your most worn, maybe I’ve bought badly!

AnaViaSalamanca · 17/12/2021 11:55

Haha @EssexLioness four is not excessive at all, even 14 is not, but this is peak MN where posters are all about competitive underspending, hate designer bags, and are experts on how the “wealthy” live.
