How many bags do you own?

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 10:47

Commented on another thread that I ‘only’ own 4 bags and someone commented implying that that was excessive. Btw I wasn’t complaining, just trying to say I own what I feel I need/ use and no more.
The U.K. average is apparently 14 and most people I know own a lot more. I do not believe that 4 is excessive at all - more a case of a bored poster hoping to start a bun fight. But I am curious now as to how many bags other people own and how many of those do you use regularly?
Mine are:

  • 1 brown cross body bag for daily use
  • 1 smartish rucksack
  • 2 clutch bags: I black, 1 cobalt blue

@evilharpy

I have never really understood what people carry in their bags.

I don't carry much with me keys and phones go in my pocket. I don't carry cash and my cards are in my phone case .

A580Hojas · 17/12/2021 17:12

4 but I only really use 3.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/12/2021 17:13

Significantly more than the average

Angel2702 · 17/12/2021 17:14

I’ve never counted.

Off the top of my head
15-20

SylviaTrench · 17/12/2021 18:02

Over 60

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 17/12/2021 18:08

I’ve got six. Four of them are for everyday wear, and I rotate them (two totes, one cross-body, one backpack). I then have two occasion bags for evenings or weddings or whatever (one shoulder bag and a clutch).

Serenity45 · 17/12/2021 18:32

Bags are definitely my thing! I have about 100, including 3 Fendi, 1 LV, 1 MiuMiu, loads of Radleys, some DKNY, a Vivienne Westwood and some from places like Hobbs/M&S. I tend to go for quality leather and I love a big slouchy bag.

I used to earn a lot more than I do now, so bought many of them 20 or so years ago. I still treat myself occasionally. Regularly rotate what I use and I do lend the expensive ones out. Recently had a clear out and put together a load for my sisters to have a mooch through before I charity shopped the rest.

My weight hsa fluctuated over the years and I love the fact that bags will always fit Grin

HanSB · 17/12/2021 19:16

I have around 20 high-end ones, all cross-body after whittling my collection down. I stopped using my super expensive Hermes and Chanel when my children were little and switched to Anya Hindmarch, Mulberry and Proenzer Schouler. Now after lockdown I feel like I'm on a mission to make good use of all my bags instead of babying them and leaving them in a cupboard. I always seem to get stuck using 2 for a few weeks before switching it up again.

@Wagsandclaws thanks for the woc saver tip! I find my Boy too heavy so thinking of selling it but I love the look of it and sentimental as bought for my 30th.

allofthecheese · 17/12/2021 19:27
  • 1 crossbody bag in brown
  • 1 crossbody bag in black (v. Cheap)
  • rucksack I use daily for work and I tend to use this most
  • baby changing rucksack for when lugging DC around
  • 2 party clutch bags
ginnig · 17/12/2021 19:27

I have really trimmed down my collection & buy them quite rarely now think I have between 20-30. Most days I use a tote bag of some kind or a cross body. Evening/going out i like a clutch or jazzier cross body.

TeaAddict235 · 17/12/2021 19:29

It's not like you go out with all your bags at once Confused

I have about 12. Some are for work (large leather), some are cross body (holiday & popping out without the kids), and the rest are large (oil cloths or leather) and can hold a kitchen sink and a football at the same time Grin

Nobody ever questions my DH on how many cables or chargers and whatnots he has in his backpack or lying around the house

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 17/12/2021 19:31

I think I have around 15 but I'd need to check and I have two new backpacks on the way so I figure out which one I want. 4 is in no way excessive!

TuftyMarmoset · 17/12/2021 19:33

1 small crossbody bag
1 backpack
1 medium shoulder bag
Loads of those canvas tote bags

TuftyMarmoset · 17/12/2021 19:35

@Homeatlast2 water bottle! I actually measured my bottle against the measurements of my cross-body bag when I was ordering it to make sure it would fit. Also stuff like tissues, mints.

Chocolatier9 · 17/12/2021 19:50

Interesting. I own four, a Celine my mum bought for me in a despairing attempt to glam me up, which I never use, a plain black leather rucksack for work, a lovely black LG handbag I take when I can’t use the rucksack, and an LG fan clutch for evenings.

If we’re including bags for life and canvas bags of the type used for shopping, then I have dozens!

Jewellery used to be my thing but then I got burgled just before lockdown in 2020, and have gone completely off shopping for pleasure since then.

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 20:02

@Chocolatier9 so sorry to hear of your burglary. How awful! Makes sense that you don’t find pleasure in shopping anymore

Chocolatier9 · 17/12/2021 20:27

Oh thank you @EssexLioness. I’m glad it makes sense, I tend to feel I am stupid to let it affect me so. My American aunt who grew up in Chicago said afterwards: “honey, at least you’re alive…” 😂

LiveFromNewYork · 17/12/2021 20:37

1 Compact rucksack
2 Cross body bag, one navy for daily use, one rose gold for occasions
3 Longchamp Le Pliage
Plus various totes mainly used in summer

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 20:51

@Chocolatier9 I have never been burgled but I had a friend who was many years ago. She felt that everything she owned had been tainted somehow (apart from the bits that were stolen obviously). So I can understand maybe not wanting to buy more things in that situation. It must be such an intrusion to have a thief in your home, going through your stuff 😔

@Wagsandclaws ohhh beautiful 🤩 I love the wallet on chain!!! I love the tweed- I just have a classic and a boy WOC but would love a tweed. In fact I saw the 19 came in a gorgeous black and white houndstooth, but I only saw the picture on Pinterest and have never been able to track it down in real life! The Marcie is also lovely, I should add to my list of ones I want to buy..! Your dior is 🤩🤩🤩 as well!

I use liners as well, make such a difference, I’ve just seen a brand Lillabell? Lullabell? Already forgotten that does a shape for the LV now which looks good. Never heard of an extender for a WOC, I’ll definitely look into- as they Chanel specific? As I have a Gucci and prada wallet on a chain, the prada one is lovely (has detachable strap so becomes a clutch) but I have the biggest iPhone, it’s struggles to get that in with a lipstick!

@EssexLioness I’m sure you’ll choose something lovely for your birthday! I think I’d like something from Boodles just because the name amuses me. I’ll definitely have a look on Etsy now you’ve said that. It’s not somewhere I’d really thought about for jewellery x

Inmypjsagain · 17/12/2021 21:14

@Wagsandclaws sorry it’s been a long week, I’ve just twigged extender is an strap extender. Duh. Can I blame baby brain?!?!

DedafalalalalalusBloom · 17/12/2021 21:26

An LV Neverfull which is on its last legs
A black Liberty leather tote
A green Coach turnlock hobo
A tan mulberry Alexa
A black mulberry Alexa which I never use
A quilted black And Other stories crossbody
A black crossbody from Oliver Bonas with a funky strap
A vintage plaited Mulberry that is so heavy it's pointless and it just sits in the cupboard
A medium red Mulberry Lily
A yellow crossbody from a brand I can't remember in John Lewis
A Miu Miu clutch
A See by Chloe satchel type thing
A red Alexander McQueen tasseled bag I found in a charity shop
A red Lulu Guinness box bag
A tiny hot pink Coach clutch
A black Matthew Williamson studded leather baguette bag from about 20 years ago that I love and won't part with but I never use.

That's about it. So 16.

I've bought them over the last 20 years or so. Other cheaper bags have come and gone in that time but these are the ones that have lasted.

I need to get that list slimmed down a bit to be honest, I don't really use Mulberry's that much any more.

Wagsandclaws · 17/12/2021 21:47

@HanSB attached pic of woc saver - I use it in both my wocs and you can get LOADS in.

I had a Hermes Evelyne and a garden party and I adored them both but sold them in as the garden party was too heavy in leather and the Evelyne was too similar to the Mulberry Jamie I had. I adore the leather that Hermes use.

I sold my boy bag as I had to be quite careful with it as the back bends in when you open it a lot, I had to be too careful with it so swapped it for the Filigree vanity - I've attached a pic of that too.

I had the chain extended in the states ( sent via ups ) by the Leather Surgeons - they are literally magic when it comes to bags. I've seen utterly knackered bags totally restored in two weeks. I can now wear it crossbody.

@Inmypjsagain I know someone who was selling a large 19 in tweed - I was tempted but I am on ban island atm 😬

The leather Surgeons will extend most Chanel chains, they are the only approved Chanel repairers in the states, I won't use anyone else and I've sent quite a few bag to en for repair or chain extension. The won't extend a 19 though.

I recommend handbag angels for liners, they will also make to your bespoke measurements. I also use the little handbag savers and hang my bags from the table when I'm out. I don't like putting Chanel in the back of my chair and certainly not on the floor - see the attached pic they are such a good idea, you just hang the circle bit on your table and hang the bag off it underneath Smile

And this is the handbag saver, you just hang it from the table you are seated at, it's really small so super discreet.
