How many bags do you own?

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 10:47

Commented on another thread that I ‘only’ own 4 bags and someone commented implying that that was excessive. Btw I wasn’t complaining, just trying to say I own what I feel I need/ use and no more.
The U.K. average is apparently 14 and most people I know own a lot more. I do not believe that 4 is excessive at all - more a case of a bored poster hoping to start a bun fight. But I am curious now as to how many bags other people own and how many of those do you use regularly?
Mine are:

  • 1 brown cross body bag for daily use
  • 1 smartish rucksack
  • 2 clutch bags: I black, 1 cobalt blue

Gosh, I always think I'm not really a bag person but I have about 15.

NMC2022 · 17/12/2021 11:56

A few but I need to sort out as I really only use
Nude clutch - going out
Black clutch - going out
Black coach bag - daily
Tan coach bag - daily
Grey Kurt Geiger chain bag - smaller day bag

MidnightMeltdown · 17/12/2021 11:56

I have about 10 and think I could do with a couple more!

You need different colours and sizes for different outfits, occasions and seasons. The person who made this comment is probably completely clueless when it comes to colour and probably has a single black bag to clash with everything (even in summer).

I have:

2 x tote pack for work (one black, mainly for winter, one light fawn to go with summer clothes)

1 x tan camera bag for summer casual

3 x evening/going out bags (black, burgundy and light blue)

1 x black medium everyday bag

1 x burgundy medium everyday bag

1 x light coloured medium everyday bag

1 x statement mustard coloured bag

I’m not a bag person at all and have more than 4. By the time you have regular small bag, large bag, rucksacks, canvas shopping, travel hold-all etc it adds up.

Although mine are labelled more like small blue bag, large brown hold-all as I have no idea what brands they are now.

EssexLioness · 17/12/2021 12:14

@Inmypjsagain Jewellery is my thing. Doesn’t take up much space and I love a bit of sparkle!

I prob had around 10-12 bags years ago before we moved but as my wardrobe has shrunk, I gradually owned less bags to match. My capsule wardrobe is made up of a handful of colours/ neutrals that genuinely all look good with my brown bag, except for evening wear when I will use a clutch. Although next year I do want to buy a burgundy and green bag to add some variety… but then 6 bags really would be excessive 😉

@AnaViaSalamanca I think you’re right. It’s a bit like the competitive undereating threads you sometimes see on here where someone gets accused of gluttony for having one entire carrot stick all day!

Oh and I should add, we have a fairly casual lifestyle and I work from home so no need for work bags etc. I don’t need large bags at all for my lifestyle. A few years ago I genuinely couldn’t have survived on this many. It’s easy to have less when going out generally involves walking the dog, going to the supermarket or having lunch at the local cafe.

@EssexLioness exactly the same for me - I simply don’t need as many bags anymore as I used to. It still took me a long while to reduce my collection, though, because I genuinely loved each one. But I recognised that it genuinely wasn’t ‘sparking joy’ anymore to have all those all but unused bags. I increasingly feel the need for a more minimal life, it really helps to reduce mental clutter (for me).

Inmypjsagain · 17/12/2021 12:28

@EssexLioness I would love for my thing to be jewellery, the only exciting ones I have were gifts from my husband- Tiffany wedding band and engagement ring and a Cartier Russian wedding band (already forgotten the name, not the love ring? The 3 band one!) I just think proper jewellery really elevates an outfit but I think I always miss the mark. Also sounds like you’re working the capsule wardrobe really well, but wow really going OTT there with 6 bags 😜 definitely worst thing about wfh is the fact I can’t use my bags daily, I’m on mat leave now so they’ve all turned into baby bags! 😂

Manc2 · 17/12/2021 12:31

I probably have 20 ish including Chanel, Celine, Gucci, mulberry, apc, the curated and Loewe.

FrenchyQ · 17/12/2021 12:32

I have 4 but only really use 2 of them (one big fake leather one I use everyday, and one small cross body one if I need something smaller). I have 2 Radley ones but they hardly get used.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 17/12/2021 12:32

I have one bag, a rucksack. Bags don’t interest me, but I can see why others would like them.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 17/12/2021 12:33

Oh, I have a travel bag too actually

Wagsandclaws · 17/12/2021 12:42

@chocolatesaltyballs22 ha ha ha thank you! I should be suitably embarrassed but 🤷‍♀️

@Inmypjsagain you are missing out with Aspinal! I love their bags, so well made and gorgeous leather, wait for the sales though Wink

Yes I love my 19's they are so casual but you can wear them with super smart things too due to the chain. I recently added a Chanel medium filigree vanity case to my collection and sent it off the the leather surgeons in the states to extend the chain so it could be worn crossbody - I'm so pleased with it, it's quite a vivid lilac though so I'm having a tough time using it in the winter. I bought it in place of my boy bag that I sold, I just wanted another square-ish Chanel bag and it fit the bill in caviar leather.

I have the marcie bag from Chloe - it's literally bombproof and the leather is just beautiful it's a gorgeous grey colour called cashmere I think. I can't remember the name of the other one and tbh I don't use it much.

One thing I do swear by though are bag liners, especially for slouchy bags like the 19 - it helps them keep their shape and makes them more useable, for me anyway.

I have two wocs ( Chanel wallet on chain ) and I use a 'woc saver' along the bottom of the bag, it doubles it's capacity and I wouldn't be without it as they are very small bags but I love them as a crossbody.

This is one of my Chanel wocs, not everybody's cup of tea but I didn't want to spend too much on a tweed Chanel but wanted a tweed one in my collection, the cc is in shearling and I just love it so much ( see attached pic ) that's my beloved lady Dior I got in the summer next to it Grin

Tori burch Kira chevron bags are amazing - they are the only ones from her range that I'll buy. I have a round one and a camera bag version - the round one I bought as I wanted a round quality leather bag and the only real option was a Gucci marmont in the round style but it was everywhere so I went for the tori burch Kira chevron in Devon sand and I honestly use it all the time such soft lovely leather.

How many bags do you own?
HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 17/12/2021 12:44

Aspinal is fantastic - great designs and great quality. One of my favourite brands.

@Inmypjsagain i adore Tiffany’s! I have Tiffany engagement and eternity bands. I have a few rings/ necklaces that cost a few hundred each but a lot of my stuff is much cheaper. I really like Etsy for more unique pieces. I only ever buy white gold/ silver as yellow gold doesn’t suit me and non-metal costume jewellery just isn’t me either.
It is my birthday coming up soon and I have my eye on a few more expensive bits but can’t decide which one to get. I agree about jewellery being able to elevate an outfit and you can really change the feel of an outfit too just by swapping for a different necklace

I only have one that I use every day, a small backpack.
Then I have a few clutches somewhere, for going to weddings etc.

Amelion · 17/12/2021 13:09

I think I have 15 or so. I have a few cross body bags that I use day to day in colours like black, navy, grey. Then a couple of smart backpacks for work. A few more dressy/evening bags. A couple of summery bags like rattan type. And a big sports backpack.

I’m guessing someone who thinks 4 is excessive probably doesn’t do lots of different things with their time - I need different a bag to cycle to an outdoor swim to walking the dog to going out for cocktails. I mean I guess I could get one big practical backpack that would do everything but half the time I really only need a smallish bag to fit purse/keys/coffee cup etc.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/12/2021 13:19

Oh god...

  • 1 large, dark green Osprey shoulder bag
  • 1 large black Osprey shoulder bag
  • 1 small brown Osprey shoulder bag
  • 1 brown leather satchel
  • 2 small brown cross-body bag
  • 1 black canvas rucksack
All in regular rotation.

Own but rarely use:

  • 1 small brown leather rucksack
  • 1 medium sized brown leather rucksack
  • 1 green Osprey clutch*
  • 1 red leather handbag
  • 1 fabric Lulu Guinness evening bag
  • 1 pink leather Prada handbag
  • about half a dozen sparkly evening bag that were very fashionable in the early 2000s which I never use anymore but can't bring myself to get rid of.

My bag collection is nothing compared to my shoe collection though...

*My DM lives near an Osprey outlet store, which is why I own so many - it's her go-to place for Christmas and birthday presents.

ToEllewithIt · 17/12/2021 13:37

Work Bags i.e. structured with room for laptop
1 black leather
1 rose leather

Smart shoulder bags -
1 black leather
1 tan leather
1 brown leather
1 bright blue

On-trend bags-
1 brown - I'll sell this soon, as it's not a classic. I buy these bags every so often - think Chloe Drew but they aren't staples for me so I wear for a bit and then resell

Small Casual Crossbody
1 tan

Large Casual Tote
1 patterned
Have aspirations to add a large neutral tote

Evening bags
1 small shoulder - black
1 clutch - white exotic
1 clutch - gold

I thought it would be more actually.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 17/12/2021 13:54

Oh yeah forgot I have an Aspinall as well, that makes 9. Have only used it twice, it's too small for me. May have to sell it.

crazyjinglist · 17/12/2021 14:21

I dunno, maybe 6? But I'm not a designer bag person at all. My 6 bags together would probably barely cost as much as one of the designer bags mentioned on the thread.

Pheebs2021 · 17/12/2021 16:02

I have a lot of bags but I tend to use only a few in rotation
I have 5 coach a Michael kors a kate spade and a Amanda Wakerley which are my go tos then I can't really say about my other bags I can't throw bags away ever!

Homeatlast2 · 17/12/2021 16:04

I don't own any

evilharpy · 17/12/2021 16:28

@Homeatlast2

I don't own any
Genuine question, how do you carry stuff around when you're out and about?
penguinwithasuitcase · 17/12/2021 16:37

@evilharpy I can't answer for @Homeatlast2 but I do it the same way men do. Keys in one pocket, phone in the other.

I do own 3 bags (one tote, one clutch, and a backpack) but only use them when I absolutely have to.
