Help! I’m on the hunt for dress to attend a Christmas wedding in London. Dress code is evening wear I think. Men in black tie. Do you think any of these are appropriate? Or any brands I should look at. Am 41, 5.7 slimish ( size 10/12).

I love the first red one!

LadyGAgain · 14/12/2021 22:36

I don't think they shout evening attire. I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and it was evening wear and all ladies were in cocktail/floor length evening gowns.

thesockfromtheroof · 14/12/2021 22:36

The first one 👍🏽

LadyGAgain · 14/12/2021 22:37

The red one is beautiful and meets criteria

Divebar2021 · 14/12/2021 22:43

Is the black backless maxi dress glittery I can’t tell. I would probably hire something actually on the basis I wouldn’t get much wear out of a full length gown. ( as an aside I think it’s pretty self indulgent to have a black tie event at the most expensive time of the year.)

jackstini · 14/12/2021 22:47

I wouldn't say any of them are great for a winter black tie wedding

Some look a bit summery/frilly

Can you hire something or would you have enough occasions to wear cocktail dress so it's worthwhile buying ?

jackstini · 14/12/2021 22:51

Meant to ask what the venue is as might make a difference?

Reiss, Ted Baker, Karen Millen...

gogohm · 14/12/2021 22:52

If it's evening dress none of them are evening dresses

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/12/2021 22:53

Venue is a church and then a a space near the river. Do you think it needs to be long then? I was worried about them being a bit too summery.

The black one has an open back and is glittery.

They had a couple of evening dresses in John Lewis today, significantly cheaper than those

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/12/2021 22:56

Are people thinking “gowns”?!

gogohm · 14/12/2021 22:58

Yes quite summery. I would suggest checking and if it's black tie go for something more evening gown, DD's come from quiz and chichi London, mine are from bravissimo and ever pretty

Palavah · 14/12/2021 22:58

Fine to wear knee length/midi for black tie - much easier to dance in than full-length.

First one is fab, as is the glittery sequin one with draped sleeves.

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/12/2021 23:00

All the gowns I’ve looked at really wouldn’t suit me. The bride is “cooler” rather than very trad, so maybe there’s a bit of leeway?

I love the red one, maybe with a jacket for the church.

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/12/2021 23:01

Just reread invite. It’s black tie

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/12/2021 23:02

Red one.

londonmummy1966 · 14/12/2021 23:05

Black tie is tricky as it can mean full length evening dress and it can mean cocktail dress. The backless maxi would be a pretty good compromise although I really like the first red one. Which ever you go for you'll probably need an evening coat over the top due to the weather. If you don't have something suitable you should be able to rent one from HURR as they are normally quite good for his sort of thing.

nanbread · 14/12/2021 23:06

I like the net a porter black one, or the ba&sh one possibly.

The floral ones aren't formal enough and I also think most people will be wearing dark colours based on previous Christmas wedding in London I've been to.

The sequin one could be a bit bridesmaid.

I don't think you need a full length gown personally.

Could you ask the bride or another guest?

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/12/2021 23:09

Yes I’ll ask some of the other guests, good idea. I really like the black sequin bow one and the red one too. Agree the coat will be important! All the gowns I’ve seen and like are hideously expensive. Maybe renting is a good idea.

I've looked at the ba&sh black and gold dress online now and I bloody love it.

It's not that formal though.

If it's a cool wedding, I think you'll be fine.

I do love the Saloni bow one as well and think it's cool in an understated way.

nanbread · 14/12/2021 23:12

You need to try them on! They might look awful in real life.

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/12/2021 23:13

This is very true @nanbread. I need to do a quick turn around trying on session.
