Help! I’m on the hunt for dress to attend a Christmas wedding in London. Dress code is evening wear I think. Men in black tie. Do you think any of these are appropriate? Or any brands I should look at. Am 41, 5.7 slimish ( size 10/12).

Ah, amazing, me too! Gigis Dressing Room in Walthamstow has a lot of amazing dresses for rental if you want to go down that route. Lots of examples of people in borrowed things in the Instagram. I guess the best thing is you can try them all on.

fluoropostit · 15/12/2021 21:42

The ba&sh one is amazing, also the sequinned gold ted baker one.

fluoropostit · 15/12/2021 21:43

London is more casual than lots of other places so I think you’d be fine. Get a cape for over them and some heels!

ShirleyPhallus · 15/12/2021 21:47

The first one, the red one is absolutely gorgeous

Really love your style OP, a gorgeous shortlist you have

marsdon · 15/12/2021 21:52

I loved the red one perfect for a Christmas winter wedding.

DuchessMinnie · 15/12/2021 21:54

Definitely no florals or prints for black tie. You can do long or short for black tie (white tie is long only). I adore the red dress in the first pic.

Allsorts1 · 15/12/2021 21:59

The red one is lovely with heels like the photo and a nice clutch, will be evening enough. I don’t think it’ll be gowns but if you know the bride I would maybe just ask her to check, she’ll know what most people would be wearing?

LiterallyKnowsBest · 16/12/2021 04:39

Definitely no florals or prints for black tie.

Ha! Have you forgotten Emerald Fennell at the Oscars? Her Gucci floral print couldn’t have been more black tie. One just needs suitably extravagant fabric and a committed cut.

But personally I would think it perverse not to wear velvet and (something) fur(ry) to a December wedding. Anything else is Not Really Trying.

Totalwasteofpaper · 16/12/2021 04:45

I would have to buy the black bow one from net a porter.
I am obsessed it is so so nice. 😍😍😍

BasiliskStare · 16/12/2021 05:03

@ilkleymoorbartat - love the first red one and the black with the bows - I know people say don't wear black to a wedding but that is lovely & if your friend is quirky etc she won't care . The more floral ones - no - personally I wouldn't they will look too summery - Just make sure you can get something to wrap round you or a coat as another poster has said - because it can be chilly between venues . If it suited me I would choose the first red one .

I think it is quite fine to wear a more cocktail length dress with black tie. I think that goes with the code.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/12/2021 10:04

Is this too bridal?

Asos do cheap evening gowns OP

Mercury82 · 16/12/2021 10:16

I had a black tie wedding in London last year OP. (Not indulgent thanks pp!)

Yes that last one is too bridal. Don't wear cream! My guests wore mostly long gowns and fake fur coats or long winter coats. Colours were black, reds, navy, greens, jewel tones etc, on the whole.

Try Asos!

dreamersdown · 16/12/2021 10:27

I’d honestly avoid any pale colours - have been to London winter weddings where the bride wore silver, gold, pale pink, ivory sequins - you have so many other bold ones that are lovely.

SollaSollew · 16/12/2021 11:44

I would take a look at self portrait I got a dress for a NYE wedding from there. They have lots of different styles, the detailing is lovely and they look even better when you see them in the flesh.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/12/2021 15:17

I bought the needle and thread one just to try on but it's not right, too bridesmaidy I think. Also bit more floral than i normally go for!

I liked the £350 Ted Baker one.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/12/2021 17:13

That one is coming tomorrow @CrimbleCrumble1 have just sent the needle and thread one back .

I love the first red one 😍

Sorry but I think the black with bows is horrible. Very 'little girly'. Is that Holly Willoughby wearing it in the second link? It doesn't look great on her.

Hodl · 17/12/2021 05:54

The stand out one for me is the Saloni bow dress. I think it's gorgeous.
Do let us know what you decide on op!

ilkleymoorbartat · 17/12/2021 11:55

Here's the Saloni on me. They sold out of black, this is a deep blue. Am wearing a sports bra underneath which I obviously wouldn't do, and shoes are wrong colour.

Gorgeous dress!

I have the impression it could perhaps be taken in a little at the back? Can’t see that, but just enough to give a closer fit from shoulders down, and to pull up the sleeves just the tiniest, tiniest bit.

And, maybe, taken up a little so the hem hits your legs at a more optimum level.

But eventually it would be perfect.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 17/12/2021 12:13

And I suspect the blue is even better than the black - though I preferred the bows.

BasiliskStare · 17/12/2021 13:18

@ilkleymoorbartat - I think that deep blue one looks fantastic - that would be my choice - but have looked down the back of the sofa and tragically don't have an invitation to the wedding . Smile
