How do you tuck a shirt in with a small waist??? Pic to demonstrate

Help please. I'm a size 8 hourglass. I've got a very small waist. Have a load of tops and blouses that would look best tucked into my wide legged jeans. But because my waist is so small, the excess fabric just billows everywhere. I've tried tucking the tops in completely, but they inevitably come a bit loose and untucked as I wear them, or the fabric bunches and bulks around my waist just looking like a complete mess. Does anyone have any tips please? I have a load of nice blouses and shirts, but since I've lost weight and got smaller they're starting to look ridiculous. The tops fit me and I can't really go much smaller in them without having to purchase a completely new wardrobe of tops

Adding this photo to show what I normally have to do which is a pain in the ass. But I have to kind of fluff the top out very carefully and the have it drape over the waistband to kind of create an even billow that's all one length. Pic not the greatest when my arm is stretched out having to hold the camera. About 20 pairs of jeans from the Zara sale just arrived today which explains the tag in the pocket lol

Well, the shirts are too big for you ultimately.

Unless you are handy with a sewing machine you could pay someone to take them in if they are good quality ones you want to keep.

Either that or tuck them into big shaping type knickers not just your waistband to hold them in place.

yellowflowersintherain · 29/11/2021 22:51

I'm a very average size 10-12 but this look doesn't really work for me either with oversized shirts. I tend to wear closer fitting tops if I want to tuck them into jeans.

Do you wear skirts? They seem to work better as you can kind of pull the excess fabric down underneath .

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 29/11/2021 22:56

The tops I own are all as small as they come really. I don't wear skirts because I have a caesarean pouch and a lot of excess skin that creates a big bulge and looks dreadful. I normally wear dresses but I'd like to just be able to wear some jeans from time to time with my nice tops. The problem is that all of the blouses that I own are cut just straight up and down. There are no darts or anything to taper in at the waist. I have spent a small fortune on mediocre tailoring in the past. Not for the shirts, but for jeans mainly. I'm so fed up Confused

Don't tuck, leave a couple of buttons open at the bottoms and make a knot with the separate parts of the shirt over the jeans. Looks nicer and doesn't create the excess fabric around you.

Agree with this. You can tuck the knot under or ruck the knot in to front. Or "French tuck". All that said - I actually think it looks totally fine as it is.

Trust me this looks ten times worse. Completely ridiculous. One of my fav tops from last year shown below untucked and the best twist / knot I could do with minimal fabric billowing. I look like a complete slob 😖

Not everything off the peg suits a slim hourglass. With wide leg jeans, the only thing I can think of that might work is leaving the shirt out and belting tightly with a wide belt. The second shirt you show looks as if it is just too big:there seems to be spare material at bust level.

arcof · 29/11/2021 23:39

The last shirt you posted does look too big for you I'm afraid, although it's lovely!

You could try shirt tail garters?!

If they're too big then look for more fitted styles.

oviraptor21 · 29/11/2021 23:57

I don't have an especially slim waist, I'm pretty much straight up and down, but tucking shirts into trousers has the same effect - have to work hard to arrange the fabric and straighten up every time I stretch in one direction. I assumed that's just the way it goes - can't really prevent the pulling and rearranging at all and have to have a very tailored shirt to prevent the billowing.

Hairyfriend · 30/11/2021 00:01

Could you look for 'shirts' that are like a swimsuit. I don't know what they are called, but have a gusset and unclip at the crotch. Bottom half gets pulled down because its just like a swim suit bottom- but the top half might be a blouse or a tighter fitting jersey type top.

Palavah · 30/11/2021 00:02

There always seem to be reels on instagram explaining ways to tuck. I think one method involved tightening the shirt below the waistband using a hair elastic.

Ultimately though, as PP suggested, you would do well to get better fitted shirts or take them in yourself.

cpox · 30/11/2021 00:03

If possible maybe try a size down on tops (or just look for slimmer fits)

reasysteady · 30/11/2021 00:06

The look is oversized at the moment, which is why size 8 looks oversized on you.

If you don't like this look but more expensive/European/Designer clothes which tend to be cut smaller and go down in size or avoid oversized cut clothing.

You could even shop in the children's section if you need to.

I think the first photos look fine - but if you prefer a more fitted look then you'll have to adjust the clothing manually (or use a dry cleaners/seamstress) or just buy more fitted clothing.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/11/2021 00:08

The issue is, as you've said, you've lost weight and have a wardrobe dull of older clothes. I'm not sure there's any way to get around the fact they're too loose to tuck.

Also in not sure that's what asfucked meant about the knot

Bunce1 · 30/11/2021 00:09

Tuck into your pants. Make sure your pants are tight.

Perfect tuck with just the right amount of billow.

The shirts… what size are they?

Have you tried shopping in the children’s section of
Masimmo dutti
Zara
Next
New look

All have good styles of clothing but in small sizes.

What about petite range stuff?

MoltonSilver · 30/11/2021 00:11

The tops are far too big for you. Even the sleeves are too long. No amount of tucking will make them look like they fit.

You say they are as small as they come. How is that possible? What size are they? There is always a petite range, teen range or a children's range. There is always a smaller sizer.

musicforsnorks · 30/11/2021 00:34

Honestly it's the clothes. So nice we live in a world where mist things are off the peg, anyone who isnt 'fairly average' will find issues. Im not as small as you but am still small, and everything fucking drowns me.
Im not so sure it's vanity sizing, but most stuff now seems to be way oversized compared to the past, and i sometimes wonder if it is cheaper for them to design this way, because more seams and zipped waists and more feminine cuts would be trickier to produce at a mass scale - so i think manufacturers looking for quick profit prefer to churn out stuff that will cover everyone ubiquitously without much variation.

So i think you need a more fitting shirt/blouse. There's just way too much fabric, even if it fits in the shoulders. I have this issue all the time, and even a size 6 silk cami billows out around my torso like a tent. I have no idea why there is so much excess, unnecessary fabric going on Grin

If you liked vintage you'd have more luck there. People used to tell me higher end and designer were cut smaller but from experience i can vouch that they do not - many of them were even more oversized than the high street.

But i get you, sometimes i dont want the conservative feel of a 'fitted' top, but just wish looser ones were more fluid to my form instead of voluminous. Even now i am struggling to find ANY jumpers that aren't huge, boxy and oversized. When i did find one it was over £200 a Brora. It's depressing.

The same applies to those who are on the larger end of the scale as everything is designed for this homogenous average that possibly doesn't exist, and explains why women in general find clothing never to fit quite right.

No, there really isnt. Ive shopped at COS, Isabel Marant, Next, APC, White Co, etc and a small is never a small. They might make the chest smaller but the general theme with most stuff these days is volume. Often a size 6 or XS at COS drowns me and i am not petite or underweight.

I recently purchased a wool skirt in a size 6 from Crew clothing. When on, i can fit a small child down the waist band if i wanted to, it is frigging huge. All of the sizing charts on websites absolutely lie, especially brands like Poetry and Toast.
This skirt didn't come in a smaller size, so how come the waist (which was fitted with a zip) come up so big when the size chart said it was suitable for a 25 inch waist?
It is easily 30+ inches.
What can we do, perform magic?

whatisthisinhere · 30/11/2021 00:44

I have the same issue, it's why I've not bought any actual clothes for over a year. Apart from coats, workout gear and footwear. I've only had success with shirt dresses. I often wear skirts with t shirts and cashmere sweaters I've had for a few years. I always see people wearing shirts that fit, I'm assuming they are not new, because I see nothing that fits properly

musicforsnorks · 30/11/2021 01:23

And on another note, regarding sizing online: I recognised a model whilst browsing M&S that i had seen on another website.
The item details said the model was 5"10 and wearing a size 8, etc.
However, on the other website she was described as being 5"7.

.....really helpful.

It's a bit bonkers and possibly going to get worse as actual high street stores collapse.

BleuJay · 30/11/2021 02:39

I have a few blouses/shirts/tops that I only wear tucked in and had the same problem so I have sew four darts in them, two at the back and two at the front and that has streamlined them and they don’t ride up or look baggy above the waistband.

How about safety pins? Arrange the shirt tuck, then pin it in place, with the pins out of sight below the waistband.
