How do you tuck a shirt in with a small waist??? Pic to demonstrate

Help please. I'm a size 8 hourglass. I've got a very small waist. Have a load of tops and blouses that would look best tucked into my wide legged jeans. But because my waist is so small, the excess fabric just billows everywhere. I've tried tucking the tops in completely, but they inevitably come a bit loose and untucked as I wear them, or the fabric bunches and bulks around my waist just looking like a complete mess. Does anyone have any tips please? I have a load of nice blouses and shirts, but since I've lost weight and got smaller they're starting to look ridiculous. The tops fit me and I can't really go much smaller in them without having to purchase a completely new wardrobe of tops

I think they look really nice!

OhRosalind · 30/11/2021 10:50

You can use a hair elastic or tuck the shirt tails into support pants, but if the shirts are wide or oversize there will be excess fabric or bunching when you tuck. You could try tucking one side only, or just the front? Or I would try a central knot with the ends (not the knot/twist you did in the photo).

To the people who mentioned the struggle with small sizes, I don’t even look at Cos, Whistles etc as the smallest size drowns me. Kids clothes are cut differently. I’ve had more luck with French and Italian brands.

Thanks all. I will try and experiment and also see if I can find a reasonable priced experienced seamstress who could adjust the tops for me. I'm 5'4, so just on the cusp of petite, but most things are not available in petite. That I like at least. My chest is 30FF so on the rare chance that a smaller sized top is available, is doesn't fit in the boobs. I regularly sew little poppers onto my button up tops if I can. Children's tops would not accommodate for boobs my size I'm afraid. The style right now for children is also super baggy 🤦🏼‍♀️ I've just bought my daughter a bunch of stuff from Zara in her size and she's swimming in it so it's all going back.

I'm going to try and see if I can find some nice bodysuits. Most are super low cut plunge satiny type ones that I don't like.

And yes, I completely agree with the PP who also struggles with getting a smaller size. I have purchased the smallest size in all my tops. Either a S or XS. 8 or 6 if they have it available. It's the straight up and down cut. Clothes are not tailored anymore. They're just boxy and baggy.

I've been searching for a very specific jumper for weeks. I don't mind an oversized jumper worn with leggings. But I ordered 3 (from Zara again) and they were all massive. So wide and boxy I looked ridiculous. Sent them back. Found another from a store I'd not heard of before, so used their fit finder and was shocked to be told they don't make anything in my size 😳 I mean, really?? I'm really not that small.

Can anyone recommend some nice reasonably priced French brands or tailored brands that would suit me? I quite like Parisian chic style, romantic, classic and also trendy styles. Trying to get away from a corporate look as I quite like experimenting with fashion, but at the moment nothing suits me 😕

what about a tight teeshirt or camisole underneath and wearing the shirts open like a loose jacket?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/11/2021 11:56

Liberty do beautiful fitted shirts, pricey though.

Wotsitsits · 30/11/2021 12:00

Tie it in a knot. The second photo looks like you sort of twisted it around itself but didn't tie a knot.

Justilou1 · 30/11/2021 12:01

I’m 5ft and have a short torso as well. I have a couple of tricks with shirts. The first thing is to ensure that they fit your shoulders first. It is better to have to open a couple of buttons and wear a cami than to have it too loose in the upper body and fit your chest. Secondly, if you can leave a couple of buttons on the bottom undone, you can cross each side and smooth them over each hip.
Third step is to pull undies over the top of that and flatten the shirt down.

Wotsitsits · 30/11/2021 12:01

Excuse the jeans not being high waisted enough!

I can only pull this look off with high waisted trousers as my body is long!

I thought that. It needs to look more like Daisy Duke (although with a few more buttons done up!).
PerkingFaintly · 30/11/2021 12:07

@arcof

The last shirt you posted does look too big for you I'm afraid, although it's lovely!

You could try shirt tail garters?!

Oh my word! Thank you – those garters might be life-changing!

Feeling your hourglass pain here, OP. If a shirt's large enough at the norks, it's like a billowing sail at the waist.

QuestionableMouse · 30/11/2021 12:09

Try Land's End. Their stuff seems to be shaped and they do a huge range of sizes, including petite.

You could also try pinning a dart in either side of the shirt. Fold the excess to the inside and safety pin in place. May take a bit of practice but it'll let you shape the shirt to your body.

Marimaur · 30/11/2021 12:11

Google ‘French tuck’

Montyman1 · 30/11/2021 12:13

Sézane is a lovely french brand, they have beautiful stuff…I have jeans and a couple of tops from there. No shirts so I’m not sure how they fit but the clothes look lovely and tailored.

thistimelastweek · 30/11/2021 12:16

@sergeantmajor I knew a bloke who used to safety pin his shirt to his pants. Smile

pastabest · 30/11/2021 12:18

and this is why I started making my own clothes!

Sooverthemill · 30/11/2021 12:18

@WineGetsMeThroughIt Sézane or rouje but they are not inexpensive! Also look on YouTube for petite women who you can watch to see how to wear stuff eg how to tuck ( for example I don't tuck much, I twist a section of the fabric at the front and tuck just that so it's not bulky. Helen d'lumiere is petite you could try her.

Also, it's frustrating when stuff doesn't fit but worth getting things altered. I agree getting darts out in would help. But the jeans will look better with fitted/ cropped tops.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/11/2021 12:28

Modern clothes aren't made for an hourglass. The very boxy top look is currently fashionable, DD1 (who is 13, 4'10" and possibly getting towards a size 6 in teenage sizes) happily wears size 12 adult women's shirts and then ties a knot Audrey Hepburn style with a flash of her belly button. She has a much more boyish figure than you though and I'm guessing the issue is because you have such a small waist that gets hidden by the folds of material and you end up looking frumpier than you want (the photos you attached look good but I'm assuming they are just newly post-tuck). The Audrey Hepburn knot will work but you'll need to stick with light and drapey fabrics, I find as a short hourglass that silk is the most flattering fabric for shirts for me, cotton tends to be too stiff and bulky and makes me look 'sensible'.

Triffid1 · 30/11/2021 12:40

I think if you have large breasts, shirts are generally not going to work. When I was younger I was pretty skinny but there was no way I could wear a shirt/blouse as to fit over my bust, it would just billow everywhere else. I did find it a bit better with shirt type styles that only had a few buttons at the top - they tended to be less billowy at the bottom (sadly, now that I'm bigger around my tummy, those don't fit at all). Shirts like this

I would say you need to invest in tops that are more fitted and/or stretchy. Something like a stretchy ribbed jumper. Boden might be your friend here.

1forAll74 · 30/11/2021 12:55

You can cut some of the material off the bottom, and get an appropriate length that suits for tucking in, and then hem the bottom of the garments.. I have done this lots of times.

OhRosalind · 30/11/2021 13:52

I am petite, 5ft2 and 6-8, I like Rouje, Maje, Ba&sh, Sezane (but beware, their knitwear comes up huge), the Kooples, American Vintage, comptoir des cotonniers, petit bateau. I can buy from these brands without needing alterations, or even always the smallest size. Most British/scandì brands are too big even in the smallest size.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/11/2021 13:58

The issue is that the OP is an hour glass and so a top that fits her 30FF bust (~36") is far too wide at her waist (I'm guessing ~26"?) because unlike traditional clothing made to measure with darts modern mass produced clothing is shapeless and boxy in cut.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/11/2021 14:00

It's called a half placket. It's a lot more informal than a traditional shirt.

highlighta · 30/11/2021 14:20

I have a similar problem, so what I have been doing is leaving a about two buttons open at the bottom, then instead of knotting the ends, I tuck each end in the opposite way into the waistband. Then I leave the back of the shirt out.

Love the shirt in the first photo @WineGetsMeThroughIt . Where is it from? Recent collection? Style and beauty rules Grin
