How do you tuck a shirt in with a small waist??? Pic to demonstrate

Help please. I'm a size 8 hourglass. I've got a very small waist. Have a load of tops and blouses that would look best tucked into my wide legged jeans. But because my waist is so small, the excess fabric just billows everywhere. I've tried tucking the tops in completely, but they inevitably come a bit loose and untucked as I wear them, or the fabric bunches and bulks around my waist just looking like a complete mess. Does anyone have any tips please? I have a load of nice blouses and shirts, but since I've lost weight and got smaller they're starting to look ridiculous. The tops fit me and I can't really go much smaller in them without having to purchase a completely new wardrobe of tops

I’m slim and wear my blouses tucked in. It does look similar to your first two photos but I don’t mind, I like it.

DukeofEarlGrey · 01/12/2021 21:39

You need to find a seamstress who can take your blouses in. A good seamstress is an absolute game changer.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 02/12/2021 07:58

@Justilou1

When you crossed it over, you seem to have crossed too hard. You need to smooth and cross to avoid bunching. You also crossed from too high up. I would suggest that you leave at least button between cleavage done up, preferably one under that as well. Then cross tuck from there. It will involve draping and moving shirt to the back.

I had to cross that tight and high (it wasn't actually that high and crossed just at my bust. But if I didn't then the blouse just drapes open and I get this effect with boobs hanging out which is just a no for me. I think maybe because that one was sheer it looked really silly with buttons done up as well. I'll continue experimenting with different tucks and fluff overs lol. Will also keep an eye out for narrower cut tops if I can find them, but these days the trends is boxy and oversized and everything is just huge

@cpox

If possible maybe try a size down on tops (or just look for slimmer fits)
I agree,your tops look huge,no wonder you can't tuck them.

@FriendWoes111

You dont look like a size 8 to me, and you can see it's not just about your waist, your sleeves have too much fabric too. You need to be looking at size 6.

No, I'm definitely a size 8. The jeans are new from Zara and a size 8. Tops mainly come in S or XS so I tend to go for the smallest size as long as the buttons will do up. Dresses I'm a size 8, unless it's a smock type dress and then I can go to a 6.

As for the sleeves, the ones I've show have balloon type sleeves so there is extra fabric there anyways. They're not meant to be fitted. Like the ones below. I don't mind the sleeves actually. I like a bit of a billow.

@asfuckedascanbe1224

Don't tuck, leave a couple of buttons open at the bottoms and make a knot with the separate parts of the shirt over the jeans. Looks nicer and doesn't create the excess fabric around you.
Oooh useful! Have the same issue
MrsJackWhicher · 02/12/2021 08:11

And I find sleeves too billowy too.

cookiemonster2468 · 02/12/2021 08:18

Basically you need shirts/ tops that fit you better. Either alter them youself, buy them from a different place or find a seamstress who can do it for you. You could also try tops made from stretchy material rather than cotton shirts.

Having said that, this look just doesn't work for some people, it might just be that it doesn't suit your body shape.

Where is your daisy top from?

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 02/12/2021 10:08

@oohmama

Where is your daisy top from?
I got it last year from an independent boutique. It's a French brand. Can't remember the name of it, but I've seen their stuff on LaRedoute before.

When you leave the lower buttons undone can you not tie a knot or tie them and then tuck the entirety of the tied bit into the jeans. I do this and it works well, and pulls the shirt into the waist. Leaving it exposed as you've done won't ever look seamless.

What I will say is that (as a frequent tucker) jeans that are very tight on the waistband just don't really work for that look, you need some room for things to tuck into. They drape better then, the fabric is accommodated so doesn't cause a bulge or bunching. Look for more cropped length jumpers and shirts by the same logic, the less there is to tuck the easier it is.

Try gathering and pinning the back with a safety pin to make it more fitted, you will have gathers at back but will look better at sides. Also try higher waist trousers

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/12/2021 17:05

Look up how to sew waist darts. It’s really not rocket science and it’s such a small amount of sewing you don’t need a sewing machine if you don’t have one. And if it goes wrong you can unpick with no trace (unless it’s silk) until you get it right.

How about shirts that are designed to be fitted?

Howshouldibehave · 02/12/2021 17:35

Those tops have billowy fabric when tucked in, as they are too big.

My DD is tiny and gets loads of stuff from places like Urban Outfitters and Brandy Melville.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/12/2021 22:59

Learn to sew.

Then you can alter what you have and make stuff to fit your measurements

minipie · 02/12/2021 23:18

I have a small waist OP, not as small as yours

I haven’t bought any tops except stretchy jersey T shirts for ages

They are all ENORMOUS and square at the moment

minipie · 02/12/2021 23:20

In fact even most T shirts are massive at the moment- I had to try a lot to find a few more fitted ones.

AdoraBell · 02/12/2021 23:22

Haven’t RTFT entirely so apologies if I’m repeating, but have you tried tailored shirts or blouses? They could work untucked better than a more flowing top.

thamesriviera · 02/12/2021 23:24

Take the shirts in to slim them down, ie darts

RaoulDufysCat · 02/12/2021 23:27

@WineGetsMeThroughIt

The knot. Sorry ladies but I really can't stand the knot. I've tried it many times over the years and it doesn't work on me. Just draws attention to my tummy where I don't want the attention to be. I've tried it with the knot in and out and every way in between. 😖
This looks a hundred times better than any of the other pictures you've posted.

Agree most of these shirts are too big. Do you not have a tailor anywhere nearby who can alter them? Near me, most dry cleaners seem to have someone and there are quite a lot of dedicated alterations places.

Firstinlastout · 02/12/2021 23:43

If you don't have to have it tucked in you could get a hair elastic and gather the top to one side ,wrap the bobble round it and tuck under,so it kind of looks asymmetric. If there's too much material or you want it to look even you can put a bobble at either side and tuck both hanging bits under.

Thetrainisinthestation · 02/12/2021 23:51

You need to learn how to do the commando tuck

My DH is very slim waisted and slim fitted shirts still are too billowy when tucked simply.
He looks very smart and neat with a commando tuck and it stays put all day as far as I can tell
