How do you tuck a shirt in with a small waist??? Pic to demonstrate

Help please. I'm a size 8 hourglass. I've got a very small waist. Have a load of tops and blouses that would look best tucked into my wide legged jeans. But because my waist is so small, the excess fabric just billows everywhere. I've tried tucking the tops in completely, but they inevitably come a bit loose and untucked as I wear them, or the fabric bunches and bulks around my waist just looking like a complete mess. Does anyone have any tips please? I have a load of nice blouses and shirts, but since I've lost weight and got smaller they're starting to look ridiculous. The tops fit me and I can't really go much smaller in them without having to purchase a completely new wardrobe of tops

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. This is the best I could come up with so far. I make sure all my shirts fit in the shoulders. Sleeves are usually ok and not too long - but a puffy / billowy sleeve is popular at the moment and as long as it's not too puffy on the shoulders to unbalance me it's ok.

I don't love this look with the sheer top, as it's quite dressy and romantic and I think it makes it look a bit sloppy folded over / knotted etc. But I'll continue trying different things as I really love my blouse tops lol.

@TeaAddict235

Love the shirt in the first photo *@WineGetsMeThroughIt* . Where is it from? Recent collection? Style and beauty rules Grin

Unfortunately it's not current. Was about 3-4yrs ago from M&S. I'm sure one might turn up on eBay though!

The knot. Sorry ladies but I really can't stand the knot. I've tried it many times over the years and it doesn't work on me. Just draws attention to my tummy where I don't want the attention to be. I've tried it with the knot in and out and every way in between. 😖

Can you tie it lower so non of the shirt is tucked in. The knot would be over the jeans button.

The first photo - the shirt looks fine tucked in like you show.

The second top - the shirt is just too big. It's hard to do much with that much excess. Wear it with a longline t-shirt and leggings/tight jeans (I'd add chunky boots)

That looks nice OP.

The knot looks the best of all the pictures you’ve posted.

I'm not sure why you're so fed up. I think the first photo of your shirt tucked in looks great.

Maybe you're obsessing too much on trying to look thin? Your shirt isn't billowing out and you definitely don't look "ridiculous"!

We're are own worst critic I know, but I think you look great and very slim. Try to relax a bit. The folded over tucked in shirt just looks like you're trying too hard I think Smile

KipG · 30/11/2021 16:53

I agree that the first shirt looks great and I don't think the 'look' would be right if it was a slimmer fit. Second one does look too big for you and also too long to tuck easily.

Sympathise generally though - I have a small waist too and it's difficult getting things that fit right. I find trousers and skirts hardest though.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 30/11/2021 17:01

Thanks all. The second spotty top is actually much smaller than the others I have. It's shorter as well, so could work with a French tuck in a pinch.

On another note, the jumper I've been waiting for arrived today. WTF is wrong with the designs of things these days. All so oversized and boxy. I can't understand who suits this and how it can be flattering on anyone. This is a small. With my foot and a size 6 hanger for scale. It's nearly a meter wide!!!

Can you share your measurements, @WineGetsMeThroughIt?

I think you need to look elsewhere for nearer fitting shirts and tops to tuck in.

How about something like this, from Sézane? They go down to a size 4 and it’s a neater fit, not oversized.

www.sezane.com/en/product/ann-shirt/navy-polka-dots#size-4

I’d look for stuff like that, and close fit fine knits, to tuck into jeans.

@WineGetsMeThroughIt I think you just don't like the current trends for womens fashion. So go your own way! Look for preloved things

mewkins · 30/11/2021 19:22

Twist at the back so that excess is mainly there rather than the front. Tuck into knickersGrin and use a belt to hopefully keep it all in place.

Plutonium7000 · 30/11/2021 19:30

I'm the same shape and I have the same problem. I wear paper bag style trousers with more fitted tops which seems to to suit me.

FussyLittleFucker · 30/11/2021 19:44

French tucking is your friend!

French tuck

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 30/11/2021 20:00

Yes I know what the French tuck is. I use it all the time for my knitwear and have been doing it with shirts since I was a teen. It's generally a more relaxed look I find and it works with some of my shirts, but they generally need to be shorter and not so frilly or dressy, otherwise it just looks unfinished. I can and do French tuck with the spotty top, but the sheer one is long and just looks silly. Especially with floor length wide jeans.

As for tucking into my knickers, I only wear thongs so there's really nothing to tuck into 😂

I have some Bash dresses and I've always loved Sezanne, but generally hate ordering things online because I can't see the shape, the way the fabric hangs or feels. I've looked at some of their stuff on eBay before and when it's hanging on a hanger the shirts don't really look that much different in width to what I own. I will definitely try them though and invest in a few pieces if they suit me. I've just realised that two of my favourite tops including the sheer one in the pics are from a French brand and we're the same price as the ones from Sezanne.

I think the first photo you posted was fine really, there's a lot of fabric around the waist but it doesn't add bulk, doesn't detract from your figure and looks nice and casual.

Justilou1 · 30/11/2021 22:09

When you crossed it over, you seem to have crossed too hard. You need to smooth and cross to avoid bunching. You also crossed from too high up. I would suggest that you leave at least button between cleavage done up, preferably one under that as well. Then cross tuck from there. It will involve draping and moving shirt to the back.

Alfr · 01/12/2021 06:58

Have you looked at Pepperberry - Bravissimo's clothing? They do some fitted tops/shirts, and they are entirely geared towards women with boobs!

Maybe you could knot at the back?

FriendWoes111 · 01/12/2021 13:20

You dont look like a size 8 to me, and you can see it's not just about your waist, your sleeves have too much fabric too. You need to be looking at size 6.

gunnersgold · 01/12/2021 14:24

Pull it tight around thr back so you have less material at the front . I have a small waist ( hourglass ) and this works with thr French tuck too..

sergeantmajor · 01/12/2021 15:56

Shock I hope you didn't find out in a moment of passion, as that might have dampened things a little.
