Second ear piercing - just a fad?

I’m tempted, suddenly everyone seems to have a double piercing. But is it a temporary fashion that will soon look dated? I am a mid 40s person, I’m not really interested in fast fashion - more of a capsule wardrobe person.

I had a second piercing done late 80s, though the 2nd has probably closed up now.

Bebabelouba · 26/11/2021 08:48

Look at Astrid and miyu for ideaa

Carboncheque · 26/11/2021 11:11

I’m your age and I’ve had 7 piercings since I was 17. I ignored most of them for 20 years but I’ve gone back to using them.

friedeggandsauce · 26/11/2021 16:33

@Sittinginthesand

Well, that’s what I mean, fried - I don’t want to be a sheep!
@Sittinginthesand well I'd have thought the fact most have had them done could mean we're sheep- just 30 years too late 🤣
SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 26/11/2021 16:35

Had my double lobe piercings since I was about 16 and now early 30s.

It was hugely popular circa Buffy the Vampire Slayer era as she had several :)

Definitely not new. And if it's a fad it's lasting a looooooooooooooong time.

Second ear piercing - just a fad?
Hummingbirdcake · 26/11/2021 16:43

Have had three for decades, very common among my friends.

RedWingBoots · 26/11/2021 16:49

I've had triple ear piercings since the early 90s.

While the first hole is balanced, as I got them done as a baby, the second and third on each ear aren't.

I haven't wore earrings in the holes regularly since around 2000. I've just checked and all the holes are still open.

I now need to check on my tattoo....

TarasCrazyTiara · 26/11/2021 16:50

Does it matter? If it looks dated take it out.

Sittinginthesand · 26/11/2021 16:51

That wasn’t the response I was expecting 🤣. Of course I know that lots of people have had multiple piercings for ages! It is much more mainstream now though. It would ime (and in my workplaces) have been considered a bit cool or arty until recently- from my observations it is only in the last few years that boring people (like me) or professional people have had multiple piercings and there is definitely a fashion of a little hoop / stud 2 piercings combo.

I have three in each ear, have done for decades. My mum has four in each and had them before I was born so it's not a new fad?!

SmileyClare · 26/11/2021 17:02

Well I suppose if a quite a lot of your friends and colleagues have recently had double piercings, it may look like you're copying them? If that's what you mean by being a "sheep"?

That said, you're all grown ups. Get it done if you fancy it. As already mentioned, you can take it out or wear it when you feel like it, it doesn't leave a noticeable scar and is inexpensive to have done.
I just wear a very tiny diamond stud in my second piercing so it's not really a huge fashion statement.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 26/11/2021 17:05

Calling it a 'curated ear' and buying teeny £500 Maria Tash studs is very of the moment I suppose. But if you bore of it after a year it's an easy trend to opt out of.

QueenofLouisiana · 26/11/2021 17:09

I have the standard lobe piercings plus one upper lobe, one helix and a daith piercing. I particularly love my daith. I have a boring, professional role and no-one has ever commented (dress code means we have to cover tattoos and facial/ body piercings but not ears.
I wear titanium hoops and studs as I am allergic to other metals. The ones with stones are opal and diamond.

SommerTen · 26/11/2021 17:36

I'm 45, had double ear piercing since I was 21. Most women I grew up with had at least double piercings in their ears.

Mxflamingnoravera · 26/11/2021 17:40

I have four piercings in my left ear and one in my right. I'm 59 and had my ears pierced for the first time in 1976 and did all the others myself in 1979. I also had my nose pierced in 1979 but took the piercing out when they became trendy in the late 80s. I've pierced friends ears too, it was the way to get them done back then.

Multiple piercings are not a recent thing at all.

OldTinHat · 26/11/2021 18:09

I'm 50 and have three in each ear and two helix in one ear. My mum is 75 and has two in each ear.

StripyCamel · 26/11/2021 19:06

I’ve had 3 holes in both ears since the 90’s and I’m far from arty or cool. Have only worn 1 in each ear for years and this thread has inspired me to re-pierce the other holes. 2 down, 2 to go!

RockinHorseShit · 26/11/2021 19:08

Seriously Grin

I had mine done in the 70s

SymbollocksInteractionism · 26/11/2021 19:23

My MIL is 72, average 72 year old and has several piercings in each ear.
She has two DD's and two GD's and got hers pierced again when they got theirs done for the first time to show them it doesn't hurt.
She also has her nose done. Got it done with eldest GD 😄
She is fab!

Ghostlyglow · 26/11/2021 19:29

I've had mine double pierced since the 80s

ParkheadParadise · 26/11/2021 19:33

I've had mine double pierced since I was 18 I'm 44 now.

LynetteScavo · 26/11/2021 19:33

I think teens were having them done in the 90s- then they stopped for a while and it's now a thing again. Do people still have their bellybutton pierced or did that stop after the 90s?

Mol1628 · 26/11/2021 19:37

I have triple lobes and it was definitely inspired by buffy in the 90s!

Mid 30s now and I’ve added a few upper ear piercings and a nostril.

Piercings are definitely very common. Doubt anyone will really notice or think anything of them. You can easily remove them if you decide you don’t want them anymore. May as well go for it!

DramaAlpaca · 26/11/2021 19:37

I was very late to the party with double piercings. I got my first ones done when I was 15, and my second ones done aged 51. I'm glad I eventually did it.
