Should I buy these? Head says no, heart says yes!

I wore Doc Martens for most of my teenage years and absolutely adored them. It must be nostalgia or hormones or something but I reeeeeeeally want these!

I'm 42 and probably halfway between trendy and conservative when it comes to clothes. I tend to play safe.

So, should I buy them? And if I do, what would I wear them with? Is it acceptable to wear dresses, black tights and docs? Or leggings, chunky socks and docs?

I noticed this in London the other day too, @EdgeOfTheSky - I felt very validated Grin

I'm a size 5 and I do think Docs make my feet look a bit bigger, but in doing so, they make my legs look slimmer! I'm a similar build to you - broad-shouldered, a bit sturdy rather than slim, so I say go for it. I've softened up the look today with a fluffy jumper and I think it looks good.

You inspired me. Went to the DM factory shop in Wellingborough and got some cherry red 10 hole patent vegan boots. £99 instead of £150.

I will go shopping next week and try some on.

If you can afford them, why not!

At present, I cannot justify £160 on a pair of boots. I have had my eye on a pair of DMs for a while.

pastypirate · 13/11/2021 14:20

I've asked for these for Xmas

Glenthebattleostrich · 14/11/2021 21:23

they are gorgeous.

I love my docs. I wear them with everything, I'm going out for lunch this weekend and have a gorgeous purple ditsy print midi dress they look amazing with.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/11/2021 21:29

I wish if saved my black pair and purple pair from the 90s I really want a pair now.
Are you all buying DMS or the factory that originally made them (anyone remember the name?)
And do you still size up?

NalPolishRemover · 14/11/2021 22:04

I'm in my early 50s & they're not for me but I think we should all wear what we love.
I had 10 hole bottle green leather docs in the early 90s & I loved them then.
Well wear OP & all the other posted you've inspired!

Anordinarymum · 14/11/2021 22:13

I've got two pairs of Docs. Both Pascal. One pair I have had for about five years and the other pair I got recently. Both pairs hurt like hell across the top of my foot. I have tried blowing them with a hair drier before I put them on and it does not work. Apparently it's common. I have now bought a pair of Doc Marten socks as they are supposed to help. I bloody hope they do as I love wearing them

Voice0fReason · 14/11/2021 22:26

I am very jealous, they look awesome.
I am going to have to get myself some.

RedPandaFluff · 15/11/2021 10:14

I wish I'd saved my 90's pair too, @Needcoffeecoffeecoffee! I just bought mine from the DM website - debated going for a "Made in England" pair but I did a bit of research and it doesn't look as if the higher cost is justified, they're the same boots.

I didn't size up either, and I have plenty of room.

Mine don't hurt, @Anordinarymum, but they're quite stiff and slightly - only slightly - uncomfortable. I imagine they'll soften up in the next few weeks.

Thanks @RedPandaFluff that's useful to know.
Now to save the pennies Grin

Anordinarymum · 15/11/2021 23:40

Wait for offers on DMs. My second pair cost £159 in the shops now. I got them online for £89.99 in September. I tried them on first in a shop for size and then I made the order.
There are always offers about, you just have to keep looking.

Tin of beans shoved down them overnight! Opens the seam area right up.
BobbinThreadbare123 · 16/11/2021 07:22

I've got some Pascals. If your feet at a 5 or smaller, the children's DMs are more comfy Grin
I don't think they're as good quality as the pair I had from ages 15-35 but they're still decent.

Do you know the model number for the kids ones? They seem to fit my feet better but I am struggling to tell which are the ones I want rather than the ones for tiny kids!
TeeTotaller1 · 16/11/2021 08:39

I'm 55 I collect Docs, got loads
I wear mine with dresses and leggings/tights, jeggings/jumpers
Life is too short
BUY THE DOCS! ❤

BobbinThreadbare123 · 16/11/2021 08:51

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon I found them by accident - got them from Office. The DMs website only has up to a 3, but their kids ones are distinguished by the zip at the side so I know they're 'junior'.

Cocovivid · 16/11/2021 08:54

Yes!!

I'm 37 and have 6 pairs of Docs. They're all I wear Grin

Pippi1970 · 16/11/2021 08:56

I tried on dds vegan ie plastic and less sustainable than leather Docs and they looked quite cool but were so uncomfortable.

Even in this weather ? Don't you get a little chilly? Wink

Where do you see this offers? I've been after some Serena boots for a while that are only in the DM website. Was hoping for a Black Friday deal!

Mirw · 16/11/2021 17:21

I am 59 and have worn Docs all my life. They go with anything. I wear them to work, out and about, shopping and the same ones to my allotment in the winter. Go buy them, they are great for your feet and give great ankle support. Last for decades too.
