Should I buy these? Head says no, heart says yes!

I wore Doc Martens for most of my teenage years and absolutely adored them. It must be nostalgia or hormones or something but I reeeeeeeally want these!

I'm 42 and probably halfway between trendy and conservative when it comes to clothes. I tend to play safe.

So, should I buy them? And if I do, what would I wear them with? Is it acceptable to wear dresses, black tights and docs? Or leggings, chunky socks and docs?

I am feeling much more confident about my choice now, thanks everyone!

Although I did send my high-fashion friend a photo and told her I'd bought them; she's appalled . . . which kind-of strengthens my resolve to wear them every time we meet up Grin

Glad you got them! I have a pair of purple vegan DMs that have been going strong for well over twenty years. They just need re-waterproofing at the beginning of each winter and they're good to go.

FigureofEight · 08/11/2021 12:14

Lovey well done OP
I've got some old DMs from the 90s that I stopped wearing back then as fashions changed but they are in excellent condition. I may get some new insoles and wheel them back out.
No fun patterns though. !

Malibuismysecrethome · 08/11/2021 12:29

I really don’t get the love of DM’s on Mumsnet.
To me at my age I will always think of skinheads and Clockwork Orange. Deeply ugly footwear.

Ooh I love them!

I have been looking at buying a black pair and saw that they do the original ones and a newer one with what looks like softer leather.

What do people recommend?

Stovetopespresso · 08/11/2021 17:18

ooh I would! going to get the plain ones for Christmas adn I'm ...older than you

The soft leather ones are my favourite. I’ve got some pascals. Comfy from the first seat.
PurpleDaisies · 08/11/2021 17:24

Wear! Not seat.

moofolk · 08/11/2021 17:28

Yes

Onlyabean · 08/11/2021 17:28

I'm selling some of these in a size 4

flowersfromheaven · 08/11/2021 20:32

Yes buy them I love them. And wear what you want dress, Jeans because these are fab.

AnnieSnap · 08/11/2021 20:32

I’ve always liked the black DMs with the roses, but haven’t bought them due to concerns about comfort (I’m like the Princess from the Princess and the pea). How are you finding the comfort, or lack of it?

antsinyourpanta · 08/11/2021 20:37

I'm 44 and I spent most of my teen years (much to my mums disgust) in DMs. I wore them everywhere - school, church, fancy meals out etc.

I got a new pair last year. They're floral. I wear them with skinny jeans (I know that's not fashionable but I don't care!)

Oh, a bit late to the party... Grin

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 08/11/2021 22:30

This board is very bad for my purse!!

MoltonSilver · 08/11/2021 22:46

It's so rare to find something that you "reeeeeeeally want " so you should wear them with everything.

ChipButtyCurrySauce · 08/11/2021 22:48

I have the taller version. I love them! Wear them loads and get loads of comments. I bought red laces for them a while back but yet to change them. I'm 45!

impossible · 09/11/2021 14:30

Glad you got them! Just remember they take a while to soften in so don't wear them out for too long to begin with.

RedPandaFluff · 13/11/2021 09:17

TOTALLY the right decision Grin

Do it! I have dark blue glittery ones :)

Ooh they are great! Mine took a little while to break in though, so maybe take some plasters when you go out with them the first time.
TheFeistyFeminist · 13/11/2021 09:53

I'm glad you went for it, they are fabulous. I have never had DMs at all and am 50 soon, so am thinking of taking the plunge. My niece showed me a woman on Instagram who works in a shoe shop (possibly a schuh shop!!) and talks about the different leathers and how to break them in.

EdgeOfTheSky · 13/11/2021 10:35

They look great!

I have been observing what everyone is wearing out and about (London) and see that Docs have replaced chunky white trainers for winter, with long skirts / wide legged jeans, and pretty much everything.

EdgeOfTheSky · 13/11/2021 10:36

What size feet do you have OP?

I am size 6, with a broad shouldered big boned frame (but not overweight) and always feel I look like a man in Docs. Jealous of small-footed people.
