Help me, everyone is wearing body con

I really need some help.

I’m going up to Liverpool for the weekend to visit my sister for her birthday. Us and a large group of her friends/work colleagues are going for a meal.

I thought I had my outfit planned, it’s a restaurant, the middle of the day and I’d planned black brogues, black cigarette trousers and a top and blazer (bit like the photo)

Then my sister (who has a completely different style to me) asked what I was wearing and I told her and she basically said I look like I’m about to lecture Geography (thanks) and all the girls are dressing up. As in, body con dresses and stilettos/ boots and now I’m worried and need help because:

  1. I’ve been up there before and felt underdressed on a night out when I thought I was glammed up, so I know how dressy it can get
  2. I thought it was going to be less dressy being a day meal do now I’ve no clue what to wear.
  3. I don’t have anything that dressy

Help! What would you wear? Anyone from Liverpool around to offer advice? Is it really the done thing to dress up in the day up there?

Of course, I’m not going to change how I dress but …ugh I dunno. I’m worried I’m just going to look so out of place!

Is a midi dress, block heeled boots and a long sleeved top, think knit jumper ok? Sort of dressy but not ‘dressy’

Yeah I’m now overthinking my entire being .

There's nothing quite the same as 'Liverpool dressed up' Grin Even in the middle of the day, people here will have their full glam on.
Where are you eating?

brokenbiscuitsx · 03/11/2021 21:35

A bit like this … but with a closer fitting jumper/ top??

I think you'll be way more stylish, more comfortable and more true to yourself than anyone else there. Either wear your outfit with pride or don't go.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 03/11/2021 21:38

Is this you ^ you're stunning and you could throw anything on and look great I'm sure! but yes you may stand out if everyone is full glam (not always a bad thing!)

You said you had a black dress, can you wear it with more stiletto or dressy heels and full glam make up? So it's your dress and style but just a bit more glam.

😩 I wish it was me, it just isn’t!

Panoramic? It looks lovely.

You look lovely, and have the most incredible hair. Your sister is very rude, and very wrong. Don’t let the body con crew get to you. You look stylish, they will not.

TheCategoryIs · 03/11/2021 21:39

Could you maybe switch to high heels (join in the tottering) and maybe change the jacket to something tighter/ fitted. Maybe ramp up the make up and nails too. I like your look but agree you will look quite nun like next to body con dresses.

I wish!! Grin No that’s from one of my Pinterest boards Blush

The midi dress is quite loose fitting, and the only boots I have are flat Dr Martens or block heels. I suppose that would look ok 😊

Honestly I did not think body-con was still in fashion.
You wear what makes you feel comfortable and bugger the rest. If they are all in bodycon then they are sheep who have no individual style IMHO.
Wear a dress by all means but not body-con

JMAngel1 · 03/11/2021 21:41

That's Model Mouth Grin

Just wear what you feel comfortable in - but maybe just the midi dress without a jumper?

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 03/11/2021 21:41

What about wearing heels with your original outfit?

Blush I wish! it’s just a Pinterest pic (agree she’s gorge though!!)

Haha yes she is but then I have called her ‘Love Island’ before so all very sisterly. 🤣

I made this mistake in Liverpool a few years ago. Couldn’t believe how dressed up people were.
Is there anything in your wardrobe that you’ve not felt bold enough to wear before? Because if so this is the time to wear it!

Aha!! Now I can stalk more of her style thank you! Grin

Stick to your style. Body con dresses and heels are a bit naff and Dynasty in my opinion. You'll stand out for the right reasons.

justswaying · 03/11/2021 21:49

How about the midi dress with a blazer?
Or the first outfit with a heel instead ?

justswaying · 03/11/2021 21:49

Whatever you do make sure you arrive in Liverpool with your hair in rollers, that's the rulez

LolaSmiles · 03/11/2021 21:49

I like your original outfit, but for full disclaimer I really don't like the glitzy day drinking look at all.

Could you swap to a comfy pair of heeled ankle boots and then maybe add a bit more makeup if you want to dress it up a little more.

Being comfortable and true to your own style is much better than trying to fit into someone else's idea of glam.

Itsbeen84yearss · 03/11/2021 21:50

I’n scouse and tbh yes there’s a lot dressed up but there’s a big eclectic mix too. Anything goes really especially in the daytime. You’re pretty gorgeous so you don’t need to try too hard. Ignore your sister. I don’t think she knows what a geography lecturer looks like. I’ve certainly never seen anyone in academia look like you lol. I don’t like the skirt baggy jumper look but a similar skirt with a tight polo could be cute but there’s nothing wrong with your original outfit. When I visited family recently there and went out I went for a tea dress, tights and ankle boots and felt great

Echobelly · 03/11/2021 21:51

Something a bit rockabilly/50s with stack heels/wedges? That's my go-to for glam without doing bodycon (I'm slimmish but lumpy with small boobs and a big tummy). it's not underdressed but it's not trying to compete with anyone who wants to wear a scrap of lycra and super-high heels.

JanetandJohn500 · 03/11/2021 21:51

At lunchtime Panoramic will be a mix of people already dressed for a night out and people there for afternoon tea with their Nan.
I really like both of your outfits and I'd definitely go out dressed in your first outfit but be aware that Liverpool girls (in my experience) tend to go the extra mile. I once went to a wedding of one of my in-laws. I thought I looked quite dressed down but I was significantly more glam than anyone else there (and I am in no way glamorous) 🤣
Spray tan ✔️
Nails ✔️
Lashes ✔️
Heels ✔️
Professional make up ✔️
Hair done /up ✔️
In some places, people do some of these things. In Liverpool, people do them all... just to go to the pub 🤣

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/11/2021 21:57

I'd stick to your own look rather than trying to adopt some style that you're not even into. If anyone gives you a pitying look just respond with a 'would you like to talk about ox-bow lake formations?'

brokenbiscuitsx · 03/11/2021 21:58

Thanks everyone, I know it’s a bit sad but I feel clueless at the day dressing up thing (and also whisphers would like to fit in a little bit Blush)

Ok taking into account all advice, what about a black silk midi skirt and black block heel pointed ankle boots and then a camel coloured polo top? So glam up bottom, comfier up top 🤣

What coat, biker jacket?

Itsbeen84yearss · 03/11/2021 21:59

Actually this is true ^^ what you get is that if the scouse girls do wear a more casual outfit they still have a curly blow, nails, tan, lashes and usually pro makeup done. I had all but the pro makeup last time I went. I usually do that if I’m going for a say out shopping there Grin
