What age is Seasalt aimed at?

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?

I like their fabrics. There is an ocean of poor fabrics out there atm. If it’s three Seasalt Bretons versus ten tops from Next, it’s the three Seasalt every time. I wear mine to work with cropped wide jeans and docs. I think I look pretty stylish in an ageless way. Those Bretons get washed and worn, washed and worn again and again for years and still they come up lovely. I’d have worn them at 20 if I could have afforded them.

I find Boden quality of fabric very similar. Pricey but cheaper and better dressed in the long run.

MmeD · 09/10/2021 11:09

I clicked on this thread expecting to read that the OP felt Seasalt was a bit young. I’ll just back my style-less, ancient self out of this thread now.

saraclara · 09/10/2021 11:11

Yep. I hate synthetic fabrics, so Seasalt's lovely soft cottons are the main reason I buy from them. The sailor tops are so comfy that I have five of them.

I have a few bits from Seasalt but a lot of it puts my in mind of the clothes that gets advertised at the back of the sunday supplements which clearly isn’t aimed at people who priories style (whatever their age!)

But I also find things like Boden and Joules a bit frumpy so I’m clearly just not the target market. I’m 44, and like Cos, Toast, Arket mostly.

RaoulDufysCat · 09/10/2021 11:13
@RaoulDufysCat are you 20?
In which case, I'm more than double your age so you are free to call me old 🤣
No I'm 52, it was a joke!

LastToBePicked · 09/10/2021 11:14

I do agree on the quality though and I wish they still did some kids clothes - we’ve got a Breton top that been an absolute favourite of my DS’s, worn for years and still looks great. It’ll be a sad day when they finally grow out of it.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/10/2021 11:19

I don't really think about age when buying clothes, but perhaps that's because I've never been fashionable and now I'm old. However, I don't buy Seasalt anymore since I bought a very nice tunic from them but when I went to put something in my pocket I found that they weren't real pockets. I'm still not over the white-hot fury that I felt at the time and don't trust them any more. (For context, I needed my phone to get the code to open a delivery locker and then I needed both hands to take the box out and that's the moment that I found that I didn't have real pockets.)

ballroompink · 09/10/2021 11:24

@saraclara

I have two Seafolly jackets (gutted to see that they're now discontinued), and my daughter, in her mid 20s also bought a yellow copycat version, as Seasalt was out of her budget.

They're comfy, shower proof, and never show their age. Mine still look like new. And anyone can wear them, from 20 to 90, ffs.

I'm really sad about my Seafolly (I have a dark green one) as it has discoloured and faded really badly. I've had it for four years and worn it a lot but it's a shame and of course now they're discontinued!

I'm in my 30s btw. So what waterproofs are you all wearing in your 30s and 40s? I also have a Barbour for very outdoorsy walks.

MsAnnFrope · 09/10/2021 11:31

Wow I’m finding this thread quite ageist! I’m early 40s, I don’t really wear sea salt/joules/boden patterned stuff as I don’t like the prints but I like their basics.
I obviously don’t care about fashion as I wear a Barbour on the school run so I’m cosy and dry!

I can understand S&B board posters feeling these brands are not very “fashion”. I’d agree! But equating that with age just seems a bit dickish to me?

MsAnnFrope · 09/10/2021 11:32

@ballroompink hi fellow Barbour wearer, waving the flag for practicality!

Onandoff · 09/10/2021 11:37

60+

traintraveller · 09/10/2021 11:48

Going by how often it's recommended on MN I'd say 30s onwards but going by their models I'd say 50s on. I'm 46 and find their stuff generic and a bit dull and I don't know anyone who shops there.

MsAnnFrope · 09/10/2021 11:56

@traintraveller where do you shop? I’m curious as I move into my 40s whether there are shops I’m missing but would appeal.

Halfling · 09/10/2021 12:00

Very disheartening to see the blatant ageism on this thread!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/10/2021 12:04

Honestly you only need to think whether it suits you or not. If you are buying a practical coat for practical purposes it can still be stylish, fitted etc. If seasalt fits your bill what is the issue? Plus its often about how you style an item.

saraclara · 09/10/2021 12:04

I do find their colours dull, which is why I don't own any of the tunics etc. But the stripey sailor tops are more vibrant, and my Seafollies bright and cheerful. I also own a couple of their cotton jumpers, but not being brightly coloured isn't such a big deal with them.

lolliwillowes · 09/10/2021 12:10

I agree that seasalt aim their products at older women.
But I am disturbed by the negative connotations towards this throughout this thread.
Why on earth is being 'middle aged' synonymous with 'looking like they're given up'?
And how insecure, not to mention devoid of class does one have to be to even come out with something so obviously tasteless? Anyone would think many of us are snidey 12 yr olds, bitching at the bus stop.

I see a lot of this in S&B recently - covert digs at other people's choices and tastes, passive-aggressive put downs, it's all a bit desperate isn't it?
I would have to be really, really miserable and insecure to even contemplate making silly little mocking comments about other people's clothes. Unless the person making the comment is grossly lacking in self awareness, then they need to grow the fuck up. You can dislike something without sharing others.

And no, I don't like seasalt.

lolliwillowes · 09/10/2021 12:11

shaming others.

TattiePants · 09/10/2021 12:15

I’m 47 and don’t feel old enough to wear Seasalt.

gunnersgold · 09/10/2021 12:25

It's frumpy but you can be frumpy at any age . I would imagine 35-55 though is their demographic.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/10/2021 12:26

If this thread is anything to go by there are some seriously insecure people about. Fancy thinking you shouldn't wear something because an "old" person might also wear it.

AnnaMagnani · 09/10/2021 12:40

What exactly is wrong with clothes being modelled by a grey haired woman?

Must all clothes be modelled by a young, thin, white woman in order to be fashionable? One of the things I like about Seasalt is seeing the clothes modelled on a range of women (shapes, ages, ethnicities) so I can actually imagine me wearing the clothes.

gunnersgold · 09/10/2021 12:46

Quick google says over 35

DrCoconut · 09/10/2021 13:08

It seems very "middle aged" like it's trying to fill the gap between top shop type places and bon marche, but if you like it wear it! I'm sure some younger people can carry it off well if it's your type of look.

AnnieSnap · 09/10/2021 13:25

@EmmaGrundyForPM I strongly recommend the Janelle (see my earlier post).
