What age is Seasalt aimed at?

ChampagneWorries · 08/10/2021 21:11

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?

Is it me or do other posters really Fucking hate the word frumpy?
As if god forbid a woman is not “sexy” or pleasing to the male gaze, fuck that shit.

And do not even tell me that it’s the opposite of fashionable/stylish, there are plenty of words for that which can be used to describe both genders. Frumpy is just ageist sexist bullshit.

Erm, as you were, I’m not mad keen on seasalt. I prefer Hobbs and vintage stuff…

Tailendofsummer · 09/10/2021 20:00

@RaoulDufysCat I would love to know what shops to look at instead - I don't spend the money that places like Boden and Seasalt charge because of having "no interest" in clothes or style!

Maireas · 09/10/2021 20:01

Frumpy is a horrible word.
As is "mumsy" to describe unattractive or ageing.
Very common in Style and Beauty, though.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/10/2021 20:03

I really don't think frumpy is an ageist word. When trying something on I will often discard an item because I feel the trouser length or a particular neckline, or whatever, makes me look frumpy.

ArabeI · 09/10/2021 20:04

My mother is in her 60s and has shopped there for some years. I've occasionally bought things, mainly knitwear. Though I find the sizes slightly on the generous side. I've just bought a moss green cardigan (the one with the nice pattern, not sure of knitting terms, at the top), which is very nice and was reasonably priced.

ArabeI · 09/10/2021 20:05

Also dislike frumpy, etc

NotresDames · 09/10/2021 20:08

Oh good grief.

So people take offence at the word frumpy.

I've heard it all now.

How about 'dowdy'? Does that please the thought-police?

AnnaMagnani · 09/10/2021 20:08

It's the sort of stuff I'd say primary school teachers wear to work

I work in healthcare and prior to Covid it was the sort of thing that any GP, doctor, social worker, nurse who didn't wear uniform would wear of any age!

I once got lost looking for a conference in Spain and saw a woman ( I should point out age approx

NotresDames · 09/10/2021 20:10

The definition of frumpy is

dowdy or old fashioned (re clothes.)

It is perfectly acceptable on a S&B thread.

MsAnnFrope · 09/10/2021 20:12

It’s not though policing. But you carry on @NotresDames

ArabeI · 09/10/2021 20:16

They currently have a fairisle jumper vaguely similar to one I like from Toast.

SirChenjins · 09/10/2021 20:34

but it's not sexy

Oh NO!!! Heaven forbid women aren’t looking their very best sexy at all times 🙄

The great thing about looking stylish is that it’s not prescriptive. Wear what you like and wear it with confidence - that’s what makes someone sexy (if that’s really your bag) and stylish.

No of course it doesn't. One woman's dowdy is another woman's looking fucking great. It's a ridiculous and utterly meaningless label.
Bagelsandbrie · 09/10/2021 20:43

Not remotely interested in being or looking sexy. Nothing against anyone that is that way inclined but seriously couldn’t be less bothered. I spent most of my teens and early 20s dressing for everyone else and trying to be sexy and now in my mid 40s I wear what is comfortable, what I like and what suits my lifestyle. And that isn’t sexy Grin in fact I quite like being seen as slightly invisible, considering how I was before. It’s very “freeing”.

Downton57 · 09/10/2021 20:45

I certainly don't dress to look 'sexy' -god forbid- but neither have I given up, despite my advanced age. I wear clothes from White Stuff, Fat Face and Seasalt, mainly because there aren't many other shops around selling clothes with decent quality fabrics. Losing Debenhams hasn't helped, and M & S and Next clothes seem to have gone downhill in recent years. I'd be really interested to hear where we older women should go to shop if we don't want to look 'frumpy' or spend our entire pension on one shirt?

I think you'll find many posters would disagree. Ever noticed that "frumpy", "granny", "mumsy" etc aren't used to describe men? No wonder our fucking daughters grow up feeling insecure if they're not Naomi Campbell.

We probably should all be in a home dribbling on our jumble sale cardigans according to the posters who still haven't told us where they shop. I have a sneaky suspicion their shopping haunts are going to be not quite as edgy as the flightly young wenches would like us to think.
HoneyDewMel · 09/10/2021 21:07

@EllaPaella

This model works for Mint Velvet, Jigsaw and always looks stunning. I'd give my right arm to look like her.

She makes these clothes look elegant and cool though because they are.

I think anyone of any age would like to wear these irrespective of the models age.

Which only goes to confirm that no matter what the age of the model or who wears Seasalt coats they don't look particularly cool and elegant.

Not that that that matters as they are functional, waterproof, wearable, inoffensive coats made of good quality materials. That keep us warm and dry for many years to come.

SirChenjins · 09/10/2021 21:13

Black straight leg trousers and a black and white top with buttons that looks like something you could have bought in BHS isn’t something I’d like to wear - dull in the extreme.

That model looks great because she’s a stunning woman - nothing to do with the clothes on that photo.

LittlePearl · 09/10/2021 21:23

The naked ageism on this thread is shocking.

Posters who won't wear clothes that they actually like because (God forbid) someone OLDER THAN THEM or GREY HAIRED is wearing them.

The post about Seasalt being for people who've given up caring what they look like was a particular gem.

FFS.

HoneyDewMel · 09/10/2021 21:41

This thread is relentlessly horrible

woodhill · 09/10/2021 21:50

@Downton57

I shop in these places too

Both my dds in their 20s will buy the odd Seasalt thing like the jumpsuits or a coat.

I think they also like the ethics of the company

CrispyCold · 09/10/2021 21:53

It’s not ageist to not want to wear a coat a grandmother is wearing. Every person ages, even grandmothers were young once, and I bet they didn’t want to dress like women older than them. It’s not ageist. It’s the circle of life. I wouldn’t want my young daughters to dress the same as me when I’m 50/60/70. I don’t even understand why some of you are taking this so personallly, it’s not like I’m denying I’ll ever age.

Carboncheque · 09/10/2021 22:09

It’s not ageist to not want to wear a coat a grandmother is wearing

It kind of is if you liked it until you saw the grandmother wearing it.

RampantIvy · 09/10/2021 22:14

Yes, I'm still waiting for the youngsters on here to enlighten us where their cool, edgy, unfrumpy clothes are to be found.

This thread is relentlessly horrible

I agree @HoneyDewMel
