where can I find decently bohemian clothes?!

I don't mean the hippy look exactly, it is difficult to describe, but I will try!

Simple colours, good fabrics, flowing designs, but not architectural or scandi (definitely not Cos or Arket and not oversized like Toast) Nothing bulky. It isn't something on the regular high street but it is not loud like Gudrun either.

Think antique dealer in a nineties episode of Midsomer Murders. It's neither hippy or gothic but something elegantly in between. It isn't work focused either, so lovely and comfy with unfussy lines.

It is not conservative, but the colours will be muted...cashmere scarf, wrap, long skirt, good boots, flowing coat, some velvet maybe.....at the risk of sounding like a complete arse I would describe it as perhaps bohemian academic, classical music, middle/upper middle, soft, long wavy hair and perhaps rounded glasses, wool coat almost touching floor, shawl, sort of autumnal spires of Oxford or semi rural.
It isn't eccentric exactly but it is not 'on trend'.

Everywhere I look I just find trendy floral-polyester-overpriced shite. Even brands that used to cater to this aesthetic are pretty much selling thin, unlined tat for over £100 now. I don't mind spending but never do as I can't find anything I like.

Poetry (sleek cashmere tunics) and Plumo (long velour gown) are the closest I can find but neither quite fit the bill.

How would you describe this look and where could I search?

www.hollandscountryclothing.uk.co have loads of long like rain coats

leavesthataregreen · 11/10/2021 16:34

I just tried on the Anthropologie coat. Great colour. Good length for 5'4" height. Wasn't 100% sure of the cut, and noticed that one of the coats on the rack was already wearing thing around the pocket so not sure of its staying power.

Pheasantlysurprised · 11/10/2021 17:27

thanks, a trench with hood sounds nice, if I could find one.

UniBallEye - this is where I found the caped raincoats! I bought one when I lived in cumbria and it swamped me, I don't think I have the gravitas!

What a thread. I love this look.

Would second whoever mentioned cricket jumpers. Also tweeds from eg Cordings, especially if you combine textures- tweed coat with silk shirt or velvet etc. Would also second Nicole Farhi- I had the most beautiful brown fine slouchy trousers from there that I wore with a cream boat neck hip length top.

The Jeremy Irons Brideshead Revisited- a 1980s take on the 1920s and 1930s- might give you some inspiration.

Quite like this www.maudandmabel.com/collections/clothing/products/aw-21-album-di-famiglia-velvet-double-skirt-in-black

Also odd bits from Alice & Olivia eg www.aliceandolivia.com/chriselle-embroidered-blazer/CC107D07206F463.html

I was and am going to say Lagenlook too.

I went through this phase and still love wearing a lot of the items, especially the dresses I bought. I wear them all the time around the house especially in the summer. In fact I wore a coatigan of there's today I hadn't worn for a while and felt a lot of joy wearing it again

John Thaw-era Inspector Morse goes to interview a local baronet (Geoffrey Palmer) in the countryside outside Oxford, where he is intrigued by the baronet’s beautiful but mysterious cello-playing daughter (Imogen Stubbs).

JumperandJacket · 11/10/2021 18:15

Geraldine James is her mum.

Think I’ve got distracted from clothes and am now just imagining my ideal Sunday night telly Grin

tunainatin · 11/10/2021 18:20

Kind of sounds like monsoon/Laura Ashley? Also try looking for zanzea on ebay. Sorry if I'm totally off the mark!

stickybear · 11/10/2021 19:56

I know it's the wrong era but this thread makes me think of Rose Byrne's look in I Capture the Castle. Also Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller in The Edge of Love.

Or how about 1980s Meg Ryan, or would that be too US preppy? I'm sure I read recently that #megryanfall is a thing on Instagram at the moment!

Such an intriguing thread ☺️

Pheasantlysurprised · 11/10/2021 19:59

~Even more to google, thank you so much!

And I love Geraldine James.

I used to have quite a few Noa Noa clothes ,bought between 2003 to 2015 ish?
It used to be sold in independent boutiques the brand had a few of their own shops but I think they have mostly gone now.
However it is available online ...I used to love the styling in the shops though.
I never wore it head to toe as it could look a bit strange ....sort of a cross between Little house on the Prairie and Hans Christian Andersen .

RetroTardigrade · 11/10/2021 22:58

@Verbena87

Learn to sew and get your fabrics from merchant and mills.
Really do this. I learned to sew a few years back and now all my clothes are glorious beautiful drapey wools and linen in my best colours and sized exactly to fit.
Pheasantlysurprised · 11/10/2021 23:38

I seriously can't sew in the same way other people can't paint. I wish I could, it isn't for wont of trying over the decades.

Bloody love Indiska - no Scandi trip is complete without a visit. (Their home stuff is lovely too.) However, I don't think it fulfills this vibe.

mrssmiling · 12/10/2021 08:59

If not mentioned already, Follyology in Holt has some interesting things.
Website not the easiest to navigate, but nice velvets here.
follyology.co.uk/collections/bianco-levrin
A few longer cardigans too.

Pheasantlysurprised · 12/10/2021 15:55

oh god, this jacket at Follyology!

I have a jacket very like that that I've owned for approximately 30 years and cannot bear to part with.
Going out later, might just wear it Grin

RestlessMillennial · 14/10/2021 02:18

My mum is a teacher, I remember in the mid 2000s she used to get a lot of clothes from Principles, and M&S a lot of suede, brown tones and bohemian.

RestlessMillennial · 14/10/2021 02:39

Oh and vintage Laura Ashley is great as well, I found a LA black velvet dress in a charity shop and it was my best find ever, the cut is so flattering and just gorgeous quality!

Pheasantlysurprised · 14/10/2021 14:08

Thanks, this reminds me to check for Laura Ashley on ebay :)

Moaningkimono · 22/10/2021 21:58

Might be off the market here but Tallulah and Hope have some interesting pieces!

MrsPatmoresPinny · 24/10/2021 08:00

Oh yes to Noa Noa, I used to buy lots from them.

I’ve also just found Sondeflor from an IG ad. Has anyone bought from them before?
