where can I find decently bohemian clothes?!

I don't mean the hippy look exactly, it is difficult to describe, but I will try!

Simple colours, good fabrics, flowing designs, but not architectural or scandi (definitely not Cos or Arket and not oversized like Toast) Nothing bulky. It isn't something on the regular high street but it is not loud like Gudrun either.

Think antique dealer in a nineties episode of Midsomer Murders. It's neither hippy or gothic but something elegantly in between. It isn't work focused either, so lovely and comfy with unfussy lines.

It is not conservative, but the colours will be muted...cashmere scarf, wrap, long skirt, good boots, flowing coat, some velvet maybe.....at the risk of sounding like a complete arse I would describe it as perhaps bohemian academic, classical music, middle/upper middle, soft, long wavy hair and perhaps rounded glasses, wool coat almost touching floor, shawl, sort of autumnal spires of Oxford or semi rural.
It isn't eccentric exactly but it is not 'on trend'.

Everywhere I look I just find trendy floral-polyester-overpriced shite. Even brands that used to cater to this aesthetic are pretty much selling thin, unlined tat for over £100 now. I don't mind spending but never do as I can't find anything I like.

Poetry (sleek cashmere tunics) and Plumo (long velour gown) are the closest I can find but neither quite fit the bill.

How would you describe this look and where could I search?

I have very much enjoyed lurking on this thread. Some great suggestions and I've just thought of one of my own - HW2
hw2.uk/
I think it was set up by two people who used to be involved in Ghost, so it is very much of that ilk and definitely not fashion led.
They don't seem to sell from their website, so I think it must be a bit like that Made In Italy brand and is stocked in local boutiques. I'm sure if you gave them a call they'd let know you if there was one close to you.

That also got me thinking about Ghost (I was a huge fan back in the day) and their current range at M&S has a couple of good pieces, although again perhaps more partywear than you are looking for: www.marksandspencer.com/l/women/mands-x-ghost

A belated thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread, I do keep referring back to it, just wonderful!

A lot of the links and styles do seem more suited to summer though, very floaty, silky, etc. I am struggling a bit with winter.....especially how to keep warm and dry and still wear midi or shorter skirts. A parka just doesn't suit me, and a lot of waterproof wear doesn't really work with skirts.

Ive just made another thread about a long jack Murphy country coat but even now I cant see that working with a winter weight black midi and a fitted cream merino jumper (my fave outfit currently).

How to stay dry and protected from wind if you don't want to wear trousers or jeans???

thedevilinablackdress · 28/10/2021 14:43

In winter I often prefer shorter skirts with tights or leggings as they dry more quickly than trousers/jeans

QuietFlame · 28/10/2021 16:18

I was in a popular tourist village recently and went into an interiors/lifestyle type shop ,the lady working in there was wearing ankle length black cords, slightly wide leg/ barrel shaped, a white vest/ tee over a shorter oatmeal roll neck jumper .
She had chunky black brogues on.
Now black isn’t my colour at all but the whole effect looked great, and I immediately thought of this thread!

IAlwaysCryAtEndings · 28/10/2021 19:03

This is a terrific thread with some excellent suggestions.

LadyEloise1 · 28/10/2021 20:36

AgnésB might have a few pieces.
The Edit at dunnesstores.com
Helen Cody - designed for you and expensive. But gorgeous. Over €2000

@BikeRunSki
I love love love Avoca. The clothes are ok but the food, the homewares, the cafe....

Is Dalesford similar?
I'm not in the UK.

I love this look, I rarely get it right but I would love to carry it off. Long dark patterned floaty dresses for winter and I personally like a few little braids in my hair as it's long and naturally wavy/frizzy, sort of mingling in.
What boots go with this look as I never wear shoes, only boots and sandals.

ive worn docs for years now, they never seem to get old. Then again they suit me, so I imagine it's down to personal taste. I also wear doc Chelsea boots when I want to appear a bit more polished, that's as far as I will go! I think any leather lace ups will do, but i do prefer black to brown. Boots in general really.

I am also on a mission to keep wearing my favourite dresses through winter. I have some decent base layers but do struggle with rain wear. I prefer to wear my ankle length wool coat, but it isn't always appropriate weather - wise.

I’m loving this thread too as it’s the look I aspire to , but live mostly in jeans and boots (country ones) for dog walking. Chunky calves so ankle boots/Docs etc a no-no with skirts and boots need to be flat so also looking for suggestions for boots,
Singalongsingsong · 29/10/2021 08:26

Currently have a black and a tan pair of knee length flat boots, but thinking navy suede and conker brown leather. I love Spanish riding boots but they are designed for slender calve.

Mermaidwaves · 29/10/2021 09:01

@Pheasantlysurprised
I want to wear a lot of my dresses through winter too as I'm always hot so prefer lighter weight fabrics but in darker colours which I always seem to be in. I plan to wear my summer dresses with cardis to layer and boots.

I've got knee high black boots, do brown go with darker colours too? I'm never sure. I find ankle boots never look right on me with long dresses somehow, it's like I've gotten dressed in the dark!

Really enjoyed reading back over this thread which is worth resurrecting?!

From the descriptions I think this is my sort of style, perhaps I veer to the plainer side of it. Anyway I just wanted to recommend Uniqlo - especially the collaborations. I have a few long skirts (floral for summer and wool in winter) plus velvet, cord and tweed jackets and trousers from Ines de le Fressange at Uniqlo. Also over the past few years have picked up two great slightly oversized but flattering ankle length coats (one wool, one trench) from the collab they do with JW Anderson. Their basic plain merino wool jumpers are good too.

Pheasantlysurprised · 02/12/2021 03:49

Wanted to update!

I have more or less become accustomed to adapting my skirts and dresses to winter now. Made a couple of well thought out purchases and gave up the waterproofs - they just dont work for me.

When it rains i either go a bit old school and take out my man-sized umbrella or else brave it in the wool coat with a hat and scarf. Surprisingly i didnt come off the worse for it, just a bit of damp cashmere that dried quickly.
Also using ebay for wool skirts, fine knits and jackets. Had some great luck with a few items that i could never have sourced in high street stores.

This has been a fantastic thread and it would be lovely to keep it alive. It's funny, but i feel so much like myself again since starting it, having spent far too many years in uncomfortable denim and bland tees. It is like going back to my younger days, knowing what suited me and stepping out of trends - but with a more mature twist.

Agree with the pp who advised shorter skirts during winter, although when it doesnt rain i am floating around in my ankle length tweed coat, long scarf and swishy cashmere, slouchy cardi's. I just need to get back to practising the violin now Grin

I look especially interesting pulling my trundle (wheeled shopper) to the supermarket with this new, noble air of sartorial nonchalance, lol. We dont have a vehicle at the moment so I have had to embrace a sort of cockeyed, devil-may-care attitude towards slopping mud all over my floaty bits and drying out my skirts in front of the fire (so quite likely nearing 98% true bohemianism, haha!)

Fantastic! I thought of you when there was another thread running about not wanting to wear waterproofs all the time (was that you??)
I'm also spending a lot of time in an oversize St Michael tweed coat, mohair scarf, and a beret.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 02/12/2021 08:07

Am late chiming in, OP, but wanted to suggest Noa Noa and East.

ilovecherries · 02/12/2021 08:19

Do you mean dark academia? You can search it as a hash tag on insta.

ilovecherries · 02/12/2021 08:21

Sorry? This thread only showed as six messages long when I added my tuppence worth, then hundreds more appeared Blush

It's a great way of describing it - but online searches for this will be overwhelmed by teens in short manga style skirts, long socks and harry potter glasses, prancing around coyly with second hand books.. ...very tumblr-esque.

It has a far more preppy edge as a hashtag than anything remotely close to my imagined version of it. I see a strident, mature woman with a wild look in her eyes Grin

I did feel like a mixture of Snape and 60's Dr Who the other day though. Then i began complaining about someone speeding through a zebra crossing and realised i was actually channeling Withnail and I (my favourite film).

Mainio and danafae might have winter bits that suit- the look altogether might not suit, but I've seen lots of positive results of the quality. If you didn't want to order from Europe yourself, there is a shop called Funky Little People who specialises is scandi goods, and she often places group orders coordinated through her Facebook page. No connection to the store, but I have shopped there

Purchased my first item form Nygardsanna, so very happy with it!

Thank you to all of you who recommended this label earlier. You can't find much of it in the UK, sadly. I only wish there were more labels like this within the UK, I know we have Toast, etc, but there's no option for those of us who prefer more streamlined designs that aren't simply oversized, created with very high quality, magnificent fabrics..

Haven't RTFT but if you want to look North Oxford lady take a look at Vanilla: https://www.vanillalife.com

I'm from Oxford and the really loaded ones all shop there when they can't get to London. I live abroad now, but still can't shake the Oxford-y boho styles I grew up with Grin
