where can I find decently bohemian clothes?!

I don't mean the hippy look exactly, it is difficult to describe, but I will try!

Simple colours, good fabrics, flowing designs, but not architectural or scandi (definitely not Cos or Arket and not oversized like Toast) Nothing bulky. It isn't something on the regular high street but it is not loud like Gudrun either.

Think antique dealer in a nineties episode of Midsomer Murders. It's neither hippy or gothic but something elegantly in between. It isn't work focused either, so lovely and comfy with unfussy lines.

It is not conservative, but the colours will be muted...cashmere scarf, wrap, long skirt, good boots, flowing coat, some velvet maybe.....at the risk of sounding like a complete arse I would describe it as perhaps bohemian academic, classical music, middle/upper middle, soft, long wavy hair and perhaps rounded glasses, wool coat almost touching floor, shawl, sort of autumnal spires of Oxford or semi rural.
It isn't eccentric exactly but it is not 'on trend'.

Everywhere I look I just find trendy floral-polyester-overpriced shite. Even brands that used to cater to this aesthetic are pretty much selling thin, unlined tat for over £100 now. I don't mind spending but never do as I can't find anything I like.

Poetry (sleek cashmere tunics) and Plumo (long velour gown) are the closest I can find but neither quite fit the bill.

How would you describe this look and where could I search?

@leavesthataregreen I'd love to know which designers your client wears.

It was an oversized look but an acquaintance was dressed head to toe in Egg clothing in the summer. Nice quality. www.eggtrading.com

www.looseendslymington.com

This any good? They stock Oska and similar lower priced alternatives. I've bought a lot here over the years and it's lasted well and I still wear it so it's been worth the initial outlay.

Maybe worth a visit if it's not too far away

whatisheupto · 04/10/2021 20:47

Is Monsoon too obvious to mention?

Also Etsy. One of the filters you can select is "Boho". Especially good for summer linen dresses.

corblimeygov · 04/10/2021 21:13

Shameless placemarking 🍷 cheers everyone who's given some amazing ideas !

RedSparklesGreenSparkles · 04/10/2021 23:25

Don't remember MM, Cate Blanchett in Notes On A Scandal makes me think of this https://nu-denmark.com maybe a bit expensive and I don't know if it's what you are after?

Anordinarymum · 04/10/2021 23:26

@SkylarFerris

Joe Browns
Exactly this !
leavesthataregreen · 04/10/2021 23:49

Oska clothes are lovely but they are very oversized. I always feel they could only work on someone over 5'10".

Justilou1 · 05/10/2021 00:16

If you’re thinking Annie Hall-style clothing, you can get basics from Uniqlo or Muji and play with men’s department also.
Sezane would have some lovely prints in darker colours that might float your boat.
This site is quite “out there”. It has costumes and clothing. It has boho claims, but a wide range of boho styles (as opposed to expensive hippie chic). I quite like some of the Japanese woodland fairy- inspired Mori Girl ideas. I’m sure they’re a bit much for you, but if you look at the various “genres” of boho you might find the name of what you’re looking for. www.woodlandgatherer.com/collections/boho-vibes-bohemian-dreams-woodland-gatherer-ulladulla-nsw-fashion-accessories-gifts-decor

Last time I looked through a Joe Browns catalogue that fell out of some magazine or other, it seemed to be full of horrible synthetic stuff. I don't think arty Oxford woman would do acrylic jumpers or polyester blouses, would she?

Oska, Toast and Clemente.

supperlover · 05/10/2021 02:20

Sorry, it's actually Elemente Clemente.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 05/10/2021 02:50

Some Ralph Lauren leans towards this.

gofg · 05/10/2021 03:25

I would have a look at Etsy. I drift around all summer in linen garments from Etsy sellers.

leavesthataregreen · 05/10/2021 06:08

OP are you sure Poetry isn't exactly what you are looking for? I am slavering at their blouses and tunics this season.

freezerdinners · 05/10/2021 12:23

Place marking - what a brilliant thread!

Shellingbynight · 05/10/2021 17:53

I agree with the PP, I like Poetry and they could have some good options. And that then reminded me of their sister brand Wrap. Both have a lot of natural plain drapey fabrics.

Sorry, also shamelessly placemarking- I am absolutely loving this thread, and living vicariously through you all.

I am very petite, so while my heart belongs to boho, mainly my wardrobe does not- I wear plain clothes almost always, with probably just two items patterned- two fair isle jerseys that I adore (and need for warmth!). And I cannot carry off any fussiness, so clean lines only.
Thankfully my daughter embraces maximalism Wink

thedevilinablackdress · 10/10/2021 13:58

Feeling low-key bohemian today - vintage Laura Ashley needlecord mid-calf flouncy skirt in a plain colour, fine knit merino jumper, long soft trench coat, stompy ankle boots.

Pheasantlysurprised · 10/10/2021 14:24

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this wonderful thread, I appreciate it so much and am so glad I started it!

I am still having no luck. My current wardrobe is almost non existent and I can't for the life of me find anything decent in the shops, either on or offline. I have tried ebay, charity, Oska, Poetry, Baukjen... you name it.
There's a complete dearth of hip-skimming, decent quality clothes, or anything of a fabric composition that I'd trust.
Most items are either voluminous or chunky/short. It seems that even current vintage/ebay follow trends too - so everything is aimed at high waist/short tops right now. I am desperate to find a fine knit top with long sleeves, composed of natural fabrics that isn't spongey, chunky or waist length. I just want clothes to skim against me, with flat waists instead of paper bag or pleats that come up to my breasts.

The look I am drawn to is a very simple, pared down, slightly luxe 90's. A touch bohemian but not dazzling or vividly patterned. Literally every store I check out has shorter, thicker knits that go in at the waist. There is nothing flowing outside of Gudrun Sjoden, and this isn't the look I am after.
Even Toast has gone too 'fisherman chunky clown shoes/boots' for me.
Nothing is sleek, anywhere! Sleek and lovely fabrics that flow instead of ballooning.

It is impossible to escape trends, it seems. Even in the places you wouldn't expect to be dominated by them. Even vintage sellers seem to organise their current stock to reflect.....trends.

There is one skirt that appeals to me (at Poetry) but it is insanely long and seeing as it converges towards the hem I am not sure if it could be shortened. If anyone could advise please let me know, I am adding a photo of it.
Thank you, again Flowers

I think what I mean is, even shops like Brora are becoming too trend focused, which means if you pay through the nose for a silk dress or cashmere, etc, it will look dated within a few months.
Almost everything on the Brora site right now is like an expensive version of Asos, frilly mini skirts and trendy teen flares. There doesn't appear to be anything of quality anymore that isn't imitating fast fashion.

Op have you looked at Folk? Or Noa Noa?

leavesthataregreen · 10/10/2021 14:38

OP can you post a pic of the ideal outfit as I can't quite picture how what you describe fits with 90s clothing.

leavesthataregreen · 10/10/2021 14:51

House of Bruar has pure cashmere tunics - long and skimming, for only £129. Not great photos but you can imagine styling them and layering them in interesting ways.
