where can I find decently bohemian clothes?!

I don't mean the hippy look exactly, it is difficult to describe, but I will try!

Simple colours, good fabrics, flowing designs, but not architectural or scandi (definitely not Cos or Arket and not oversized like Toast) Nothing bulky. It isn't something on the regular high street but it is not loud like Gudrun either.

Think antique dealer in a nineties episode of Midsomer Murders. It's neither hippy or gothic but something elegantly in between. It isn't work focused either, so lovely and comfy with unfussy lines.

It is not conservative, but the colours will be muted...cashmere scarf, wrap, long skirt, good boots, flowing coat, some velvet maybe.....at the risk of sounding like a complete arse I would describe it as perhaps bohemian academic, classical music, middle/upper middle, soft, long wavy hair and perhaps rounded glasses, wool coat almost touching floor, shawl, sort of autumnal spires of Oxford or semi rural.
It isn't eccentric exactly but it is not 'on trend'.

Everywhere I look I just find trendy floral-polyester-overpriced shite. Even brands that used to cater to this aesthetic are pretty much selling thin, unlined tat for over £100 now. I don't mind spending but never do as I can't find anything I like.

Poetry (sleek cashmere tunics) and Plumo (long velour gown) are the closest I can find but neither quite fit the bill.

How would you describe this look and where could I search?

I know what you mean about even the second hand market following trends.
Current shapes are good on me so I'm stocking up while the going is good. There'll be lean times ahead no doubt.
Is bias cut what you're after skirt-wise? One of my personal no-nos for my shape, but I remember lots of lovely ones about in the late 90s

Pheasantlysurprised · 10/10/2021 16:03

@leavesthataregreen

OP can you post a pic of the ideal outfit as I can't quite picture how what you describe fits with 90s clothing.
I have honestly tried to find some. Fashion sites are useless, but the only time I have seen it is in early Midsomer Murders episodes, some Inspector Morse, Ruth Rendell, or British drama up to around 2007. It has muted tones and darker elements, such as navy, charcoal, flowing velvet, silk, or just cotton. It is simple and not exuberant, so not showy of status, but would be fitting at a theatre opening or art gallery from that time. Think ankle length navy wool coat, leather boots, simple flowing skirt in dark tones, wool mix or silk with subtle pattern or texture, maybe a sleek, fine knit top or jumper with delicate edging......understated necklace, wavy natural hair, minimal make up, rounded glasses.

I have a few examples from Midsomer but when I try to screen cap them from Prime Video the image is blank:(

I will have a look around!

A coupe of photos from my phone, I couldn't grab screenshots so apologies for quality. You can't see details but might get the idea, I think she is in a paisley gown, a wool coat and some sort of lovely scarf.

And a few more screenshots from my YouTube drama folder Grin
Not so much full outfits but the look, definitely.

@RadioSixMusicLover

I have Nicole Kidman’s character in The Undoing in my head immediately reading this. Definitely not Lagenlook. (Unless I’m wrong) google her outfits, they were beautiful.
Yes I love this look too. I associate this kind of look with an art teacher-ish look, definitely a boho vibe. I think Anthropologie is a good shout.
Pheasantlysurprised · 10/10/2021 17:18

Just checked Kidman/the undoing.
Lovely stuff and her hair is glorious!
Bring pale blond though the rusty, jewel tones are a no-no for me, I think im looking for more muted, subtle tones such as grey, navy, cream, charcoal...
I do find those clothes a bit more glamorous than what im after, not so much nipped in at the waist gothic.

I remember an actress in the dramatisation of Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie novels wearing this look.
That wouldn’t be that long ago… perhaps 6/7 years?

thedevilinablackdress · 10/10/2021 18:13

Ooh yes, the one that played Julia. Very Jigsaw I thought.
There a definite likeness between your North Oxford lady and Edinburgh ladies. In my mind anyway.
I have the ceilidh from Shallow Grave in mind, and early Rebus's.
And Daniella Nardini in This Life

thedevilinablackdress · 10/10/2021 18:18

And over in Glasgow, the character of Maddy, played by Eleanor David, in the film Comfort and Joy.

LouisaMayAlcott · 10/10/2021 18:29

Poetry and their sister company Wrap London. I much prefer Poetry though.

NalPolishRemover · 10/10/2021 18:40

I don't think the look you want is in any one shop but think you can put it together from various places

stickybear · 10/10/2021 19:42

Have you tried Olive Clothing? I've never had anything from them but their advertising follows me round social media and some of their dresses and knitwear look beautiful. I think a lot of it is one size only though so not sure how that would work. Also some of the plainer pieces from Seasalt might suit?

You might love two Finnish brands - Mainio and Papu Stories.

Also worth checking Magic Linen for linen pieces (they are based in Estonia or one of the other Baltic countries).

She literally said in the OP "not loud like Gudrun".
slipperyeel · 10/10/2021 22:49

It’s #darkacademia - very au courant

Pheasantlysurprised · 11/10/2021 00:44

I do like Gudrun but none of the colours or styles suit me.

Bookmarked as interested. Someone mentioned Joe Browns. I used to love their goods. They have gone far too mainstream now

HarrietsweetHarriet · 11/10/2021 09:22

Adding so I can follow too!
I loved the wardrobe of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic.
Also the wardrobe from Little Women.

BookishKitten · 11/10/2021 11:31

I think the description is what is called “dark academia” look.
Have you tried Etsy? There are a lot of independent clothes shops on Etsy that cater for this look. Just type what you want in the Etsy search engine and browse.
I love the look by the way and would love to be able to pull it off myself!

Hamtonn · 11/10/2021 11:58

I’ve tried to look on Prime but Midsomer Murders isn’t available to watch? So I have no idea what look you’re going for. I googled Dark Academia but tbh it just looks like a student sort of look, is that what you’re aiming for?

Apologies, I watch it via Prime but it is actually Britbox (ITV hub) :)
