where can I find decently bohemian clothes?!

I don't mean the hippy look exactly, it is difficult to describe, but I will try!

Simple colours, good fabrics, flowing designs, but not architectural or scandi (definitely not Cos or Arket and not oversized like Toast) Nothing bulky. It isn't something on the regular high street but it is not loud like Gudrun either.

Think antique dealer in a nineties episode of Midsomer Murders. It's neither hippy or gothic but something elegantly in between. It isn't work focused either, so lovely and comfy with unfussy lines.

It is not conservative, but the colours will be muted...cashmere scarf, wrap, long skirt, good boots, flowing coat, some velvet maybe.....at the risk of sounding like a complete arse I would describe it as perhaps bohemian academic, classical music, middle/upper middle, soft, long wavy hair and perhaps rounded glasses, wool coat almost touching floor, shawl, sort of autumnal spires of Oxford or semi rural.
It isn't eccentric exactly but it is not 'on trend'.

Everywhere I look I just find trendy floral-polyester-overpriced shite. Even brands that used to cater to this aesthetic are pretty much selling thin, unlined tat for over £100 now. I don't mind spending but never do as I can't find anything I like.

Poetry (sleek cashmere tunics) and Plumo (long velour gown) are the closest I can find but neither quite fit the bill.

How would you describe this look and where could I search?

This makes me think of the dressing like Monty Don thread… www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/4281220-If-Monty-Don-was-a-woman

The Row?

Everything at MoukiMou?

Mixed with pieces from Dries van Noten?

You have, btw, described the nicest slice of my life - but my clothes tend to something more … disruptive.

(All my more-careworn-than-bohemian academic friends of my vintage lean towards Toast …)

Thank you, I will check these out.

It's tricky, and possibly only searchable via vintage channels, but so bloody hard to describe I could go around in circles.

It isn't quite the Toast look, nothing is particularly oversized, just not fitted. There's nothing chunky or artisanal with it either.

My terrible, fumbling description describes a few older family members who are sadly no longer with us, I used to perceive it as old fashioned but it is fairly timeless, I realise, now.

If it helps, I see this replicated a lot in older tv dramas such as Morse, Midsomer, stuff like that. It isn't contemporary but isn't dated either.

Two more stores, each housing several designers, but with a more or less shared aesthetic:

This one

and

Another one

Margaret Howell?
Peruvian Collection?
Both quite pricey, but you could search for secondhand.

ScumbagDave · 01/10/2021 17:43

Yes, I was about to say Lagenlook

ADreadedSunnyDay · 01/10/2021 17:46

I've occasionally found a velvet jacket on Nomads site (but nothing available online so far this year), and I've been looking at Gabrielle Parker's website as I quite like some of the silk dresses shop.gabrielleparker.com/product/silk-blend-maria-dress/
shop.gabrielleparker.com/product/silk-tea-dress/
but they might be a bit too ethnic for you

I also like looking at stuff on Wolf & Badger but often don't have the ££ - liked this www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/emerald-velvet-duster-w-faux-fur-leopard-cuffs/?result_index=16&query_id=cab23f8bf9766e183e4d020f8f9a7970
But these trousers even more

I've also been looking at www.peruvianconnection.co.uk/category/womens+winter+clothing+accessories.do the reviews re quality / customer service are a bit mixed so I've never purchased from them. But I do like the toned down simplicity of some of their items (not a fan of the overly ethnic)

Good luck hunting

I have Nicole Kidman’s character in The Undoing in my head immediately reading this. Definitely not Lagenlook. (Unless I’m wrong) google her outfits, they were beautiful.

mrssmiling · 01/10/2021 17:50

Interesting question….your comments reminded me of a few dear relatives, one in particular.
Oska might be worth a look, and I’m adding a couple of boutiques that might have things…
Have you looked at Hampstead Bazaar? Still going, and I feel that the antique dealer in Midsomer Murders may well have been there on her buying trips. 😉

Thank you thank you thank you everyone! I really appreciate the help. Will enjoy investigating many of these links.

I didnt realise just how difficult this was to describe until I had posted my op, so apologies for the (not intentional) ambiguity. I tried to take some screenshots from an episode of Midsomer Murders but the bloody images were blank.

Im very particular and awkward I think Grin

I used to work in a shop that sold clothes like that. We stocked;
Grizas
Ralston
Sahara
Masai
Oska
Sandwich

Pheasantlysurprised · 01/10/2021 17:57

Some of these have really captured what I am looking for, just lovely!

@Pheasantlysurprised

I love your description, and am also picturing Morse.

celtic and co

Celtic and co may fulfil the jumper brief.

I presume you’ve looked at Fat face, Seasalt, White stuff et al.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 01/10/2021 18:02

It’s quite a fun challenge …

I have little knowledge of MM but the sort of rich thin North Oxford women who inhabited Morse’s would would surely have retained ‘a little seamstress’ to run things up to their exact measurements. With perhaps the odd run up to London for some silk shirts from Turnbull & Asser. (Like Harriet Vane when she hit pay dirt.) Plus, of course, the odd extravagantly beautiful item sent as a gift from a sister in law in Paris or Venice.

(They definitely wouldn’t be trawling the Matches sale at 3 o’clock in the morning …)
