where can I find decently bohemian clothes?!

I don't mean the hippy look exactly, it is difficult to describe, but I will try!

Simple colours, good fabrics, flowing designs, but not architectural or scandi (definitely not Cos or Arket and not oversized like Toast) Nothing bulky. It isn't something on the regular high street but it is not loud like Gudrun either.

Think antique dealer in a nineties episode of Midsomer Murders. It's neither hippy or gothic but something elegantly in between. It isn't work focused either, so lovely and comfy with unfussy lines.

It is not conservative, but the colours will be muted...cashmere scarf, wrap, long skirt, good boots, flowing coat, some velvet maybe.....at the risk of sounding like a complete arse I would describe it as perhaps bohemian academic, classical music, middle/upper middle, soft, long wavy hair and perhaps rounded glasses, wool coat almost touching floor, shawl, sort of autumnal spires of Oxford or semi rural.
It isn't eccentric exactly but it is not 'on trend'.

Everywhere I look I just find trendy floral-polyester-overpriced shite. Even brands that used to cater to this aesthetic are pretty much selling thin, unlined tat for over £100 now. I don't mind spending but never do as I can't find anything I like.

Poetry (sleek cashmere tunics) and Plumo (long velour gown) are the closest I can find but neither quite fit the bill.

How would you describe this look and where could I search?

@IamEarthymama

I love this style too and manage to pick up enough pieces to achieve it. I love the look of Gudrun and Joe Browns but far too patterned for me.

Morgan-Cardiff&Wrexham is my ideal shop!
I can't afford anything from there but I search email, Vinted and charity shops.

There are a couple of shops in Cardiff and Cowbridge that sell this style. Hay on Wye and Edinburgh too.

More in my range is CocoBlush in Cardiff and Newport, I got 4 lovely pieces for £10 each in Newport this week.

Glastonbury town is not just full of tie dye, there is a wonderful shop called Haruka. I bought my wedding outfit there and everything I have bought lasts for ages and ages.
Janice Made This is good too You can find her on Facebook and Instagram.

I love wearing clothes that make me happy.

It's great when you meet someone who shares your style and swop sources and compliments.

Good luck OP, I hope you find some things that you love!.

Fantastic, thank you so much for the link - although some items a touch too flowy even for me, but such loveliness!

TartanPyjamas · 01/10/2021 19:55

Cabbages and Roses? Nice long coats and layering inspiration.

noodlezoodle · 01/10/2021 20:02

Also worth searching on Etsy - there are a surprising amount of great clothes on there is just about every style you can think of!

Dragonpox · 01/10/2021 20:05

Budget dependant, check out Hero Cashmere (for allowing Cashmere) and Eribe (for knitwear)

The ‘Luxe academic/classical musician’ look. This is how I dress! Try the following sites, all online and in real life. Most of my clothes are from sales/secondhand, but I tend to splurge on jackets/coats/handbags/scarves These are what interest me and what everyone always notices. A long velvet skirt or plain jumper can be bought from anywhere, new or secondhand, IMO.

New stock:

Collard and Manson boutique: Nila Rubia: Ragamuffin (Edinburgh): Peruvian Connection/Spirt of the Andes: Beatrice Von Treskow: House of Bruar (for paisley pashmina coats/jackets, skirts, velvet): Ceci Paolo boutique: Mama B: Ralston: Aino: Anthropology: Etsy: Out of Xile: Sahara: Grizas: Ivko (knitwear): Gudrun Sjoden.

Second hand:

‘Old’ clothes from labels like East/Laura Ashley/Wall London/Country Casuals/Monsoon/Ralph Lauren/Principles/Per Una (for long skirts etc).

Happy hunting!

Some lovely clothes - particularly if you are an East/Anokhi fan.

Shamelessly placemarking

freshcarnation · 01/10/2021 20:54

Ah. Are you thinking Meryl Streep in The French Lieutenant's Woman?

XingMing · 01/10/2021 21:03

It's not about buying a look, all in one go, and being done and dusted. The look you are describing is crafted, and curated, over years. I saw it, loved it, bought it, and now wear it 20 years later with all sorts of things that I've bought in between, that I also liked and bought.

I am well aware that most style advisers tell you/one to buy whole outfits. I've never been good at doing that. I like having a very holistic look that I can rev up with luxe fabrics/textures for wedding-y and a lot of really plain stuff that is nice and comfortable for walking the dog and going to the supermarket. There is a lot of crossover. At 65, that's what I am and wear. Endlessly. But people tell me that it's chic. I think so too, but it surely isn't going to be celebrated in the newspaper.

M&S actually have a lot of stuff like this in at the moment. Long flowing, midi dresses with dark floral prints and fine knit oversized jumpers to layer over. Also chunky knit cardigans etc. I havent bought anything as I own loads of this stuff already.

As others have mentioned, Brora, Thought clothing, People Tree, Free Peopĺe, Hush may all have bits and as others have mentioned second hand Liberty and Laura Ashley etc.

BikeRunSki · 01/10/2021 21:06

Thought?

Woolovers have many styles of natural fibre jumpers, in many colours. It’s worth ploughing through their website, there are so many variations.

Wooolovers are okay, but it's made down to a price point in quality. Some lovely designs.

No really individual style is ever bought in one shopping trip.
