How many pairs of trainers is too many?

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 22/09/2021 16:31

Just looking at the Adidas Superstars thread and a few people refer to having “loads of pairs”. I feel guilty if I have more than one category of shoe or trainer at any one time but then that means that when you need a replacement you are panic buying something that is meant to be versatile and then wearing them to death… repeat cycle.
If you are a regular trainer wearer how many pairs do you own? If you see something that “pops” aesthetically fo you justify buying it knowing that the style will be gone in a few weeks or months?

I have a pair of adidas goretex trainers only used for dog walking.
A white pair of adidas Stan smiths.
And a black pair which need replacing as they’re starting to go into a hole. I’m thinking of replacing these with some Reebok classics legacy grow in black.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/09/2021 13:17

I'm in need of new trainers because DD1 has acquired a pair of mine (red Pumas, they were a bit tight for me).

I have: Vejas, Stan Smith, blue suede Converse, sequinned Converse, Leopard Print, purple Vans, pink New Balance. So 7 pairs (or 8 if you include the ones I've lost).

I love shoes so have multiple pairs of boots and loafers and laceups and pointy flats as well. I don't do heels. Hate not wearing shoes so much because of WFH, I miss them all.

OnceMoreOnToTheBeach · 23/09/2021 13:36

I have one pair of everyday trainers and one pair of actual running shoes on the go at any given time.

I have just ordered some wool, water repellent ones for winter too, as the canvas ones and even the leather ones don't keep my feet very warm.

XingMing · 23/09/2021 13:36

I have black/gold, navy/silver, khaki/copper and pony/grey silver trainers made by an Italian company that fit beautifully, plus a burgundy pair from a Japanese make that I love in summer. But no white ones.

OnceMoreOnToTheBeach · 23/09/2021 13:40

It isn't Po Zu is it @XingMing?

Thatsplentyjack · 23/09/2021 13:42

I have about 7 pairs of trainers at the moment. Only really wear 2 regularly and one pair for running.

samthebordercollie · 23/09/2021 13:48

I have 3 x Brooks Ghost road running shoes
3 x Brooks Cascadia trail running shoes
2 x Stan Smiths (one old and one new when I go somewhere civilised)
I have a huge bunion and struggle to fit my feet into anything but trainers or boots. Heels and anything sexy are a thing of the past, sadly!

XingMing · 23/09/2021 13:50

I can't remember the make, because they're branded Jigsaw @OnceMoreOnToTheBeach, and they're several years old. I would buy a replacement if they ever get them back in stock, as they are such a good shape and the tongue doesn't reach too high to the ankle. Does that sound like Po Zu? I shall google for more information.

FionasFanjoFondu · 23/09/2021 13:55

I have about 20 pairs. Trainers are my weakness. I have 3 x Jordan's, 2 x Air Force, 3 x Superstars, 3 x Vans, Dunks, Stan Smiths, 2 x converse, 1 x Gucci (present) and a smattering of randoms.

In my defence, I wear trainers or ankle boots every single day and take really good care of them.

I am nearly fifty and don't spend money on many treats for myself at all, but box fresh kicks make me happy.

mamaduckbone · 23/09/2021 14:13

I have 5, I think. 6 if you include my ancient north face hiking trainers, which I don't.
Mustard New balances
Grey Stan smiths
Green Supergas
An old pair of grey Vans
Nike running shoes
I do have a lack of white trainers...might get some white Stan smiths as they are super comfy and my grey ones are getting a bit old.

MunsteadWood · 23/09/2021 14:16

1 x Whistles white leather
1 x Gola white / Liberty print (not very versatile but I loved them so much I had to get them anyway)
1 x Bertie dark purple (nicer than they sound!)
2 x Converse lace ups, although I actually only wear one (for country walks / allotment on dry days)

I'd also quite a black or navy pair and had been feeling guilty for considering another, but I feel better after reading this thread so maybe will order after all! Grin

I didn’t really do trainers before Covid, other than for the gym, so I’ve got that black Nike pair and a pair of converse. Now my life has completely changed to WFH the only shoes I’ve bought since March 2020 are trainers and a pair of Birkenstocks. I have a grey leather pair from jigsaw, a navy pair from whistles, a pair of Clean 90 from Axel Arigato, 2 pairs from Stepney Workers Club and a pair of Air & Grace.

TheChosenTwo · 23/09/2021 18:42

2 pairs for the gym, 2 running pairs (one older and One pair I’m wearing in), one for school PE, 3 for general wearing about the place (garden and maybe to the shop etc), I’m not a big fan of wearing trainers though unless I’m actually exercising, I don’t wear them out and about shopping or going out so probably just the right amount of pairs!

VetOnCall · 23/09/2021 21:00

I have 30+ pairs. I wear trainers to work and do daily dog walking and CrossFit plus tons of running and hiking.

11 pairs of NoBulls (CrossFit brand)
2 pairs of Nike Metcons (CrossFit)
2 pairs of Reebok Nanos (CrossFit)
2 pairs of Hoka One One runners
2 pairs of On Cloud runners
5 pairs of various Salomon trail running/hiking trainers
1 pair of La Sportiva approach shoes
2 pairs of La Sportiva trail runners
1 pair 5:10 approach/scrambling shoes
1 pair Nike Air Force One
1 pair New Balance
1 pair Adidas Gazelles
1 pair Adidas Stan Smiths
1 pair Converse
1 pair Vejas

Bobsyer · 23/09/2021 21:45

I've got 2 pairs of Adidas Gazelles, 5 pairs of Vans, 1 pair of Superga and a pair of Nikes.

I just like trainers! I don't really wear anything other than those, Birkenstocks and boots in winter.

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 24/09/2021 08:06

@vetoncall that's a fabulous list! I always wanted a pair of On Cloudventures, I'd love a new pair of la sportiva mutants and I've always oogled 5-10 approach shoes (but there nothing wrong with my Garmonts...)

goose1964 · 24/09/2021 10:14

2 but technically one, a pair of pumas which are the most uncomfortable ever, out for charity shop and skechers d'lites which are really comfy but need to be worn with thicker socks, roll on winter

Pigtailsandall · 24/09/2021 13:02

Wow this thread is a revelation to me too.
I have one pair of white Reiss leather trainers, a pair of red Adidas gazelles, and a very old black pair which needs replacing as the toes are coming out.

This might be a good place to ask - I'd like some smart, non-platform black trainers for commuting. I have fairly wide feet. Any recommendations?

FelicityOwl · 24/09/2021 13:39

Oh I've got loads and I couldn't feel less guilty.

Got 3 pairs of Ozweegos
3 pairs of Superga
Various Nikes
Couple of Vejas
4 pairs of Adidas gazelles
White pairs galore

About 25 pairs all in.

I also have some boots and Birkenstock's but weirdly, I don't own one pair of actual shoes

allfurcoatnoknickers · 24/09/2021 13:55

APL for the gym
White supergas
Navy superga high tops
Pink Reebok 80s style high tops
Vans Liberty print
Vans floral print
Rainbow JCrew
Gingham JCrew

That's 8. As you can tell, I like a pattern. The Reeboks should really go in the bin, but they've been discontinued so I keep them for sentimental value.

I used to have amazing pink Stan smiths but the dog ate them Sad

AlfonsoTheMango · 24/09/2021 14:16

Whatever number you have plus one is too many.

VetOnCall · 30/09/2021 13:36

@SomethingToldTheWildGeese life is short, buy the shoes! 😄

The 5:10 Guide Tennies are awesome, I have the La Sportiva Boulder X as well but they definitely aren't as comfortable. I have the On Cloudswift and Cloudace and love them, I have my eye on a few more pairs.

PhoboPhobia · 30/09/2021 13:51

I have got 5 pairs that I wear day to day, 1 ancient pair for dog walking, 2 pairs of converse and 1 pair for the gym.

Has anyone worn Steve Madden trainers? I like the look of some of them but not sure if they are comfy?

peboh · 30/09/2021 13:52

It depends on what we're classing as trainers. Tradition trainers, I have two pairs.
Shoes like vans and converse I have over 25 pairs that I've amassed over the years.
