Boden

I used to easily spend £200 on Boden a month and knew it would fit me and that I'd like it. I can't even find one thing I like these days, what happened?

OP posts:

Overpriced, even their reduced prices are expensive, and they seem to have 2 outlines, straight with or without a belt and clingy.

Saying that did like the beaded banana earrings

nordica · 16/09/2021 11:50

I actually like quite a few things in their new collection (got the small catalogue last week) but I can easily buy similar styles and quality at a lower price and/or with better ethics elsewhere so they're just missing the mark for me. I also used to love Boden and buy something every season but haven't bought anything for years.

whataboutbob · 16/09/2021 17:18

Most stuff is frumpy and overpriced I agree. However this year I bought the corduroy jeans and they are great. They have a 20% sale on now.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 16/09/2021 21:16

The prices are incredibly high now. I'm pretty sure a dress like this used to be £50.

You can get an H&M version for £30, Seasalt for £45, M&S for £39.50, and you can usually see it in store first.

DGFB · 16/09/2021 21:31

I still love Boden but it is really expensive! I just choose carefully now and buy less. I still think the quality is good

AnnieSnap · 17/09/2021 00:08

I loved some of the spring/summer jumpsuits and always find their swimwear stylish and great quality. I would never pay full price though. I am deeply unimpressed with the new season stuff so far.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 17/09/2021 00:13

The quality of their knitwear - the main thing I used to buy from them - fell off a cliff about 6 years ago. Since then, I only buy their silk blouses, which are still great, and the occasional pair of shoes.

The 'gosh, what a jolly pattern, Camilla' stuff has always made me cringe.

stickybear · 17/09/2021 04:45

I've just bought a pair of their girlfriend jeans, with 20% off, and I'm so pleased with them. Really thick, nice quality denim, and they fit me perfectly. Some of their plain Ts are nice too, but agree they're expensive. I'd never pay full price!

GCAcademic · 17/09/2021 05:04

Same, OP. Not only have the prices been massively hiked but it’s mostly nasty synthetic fabrics now where before they had a lot of cotton and pure wool.

Geamhradh · 17/09/2021 07:12

Same here.
The only thing I buy now are trousers. And they are overpriced too. But the style and fit are perfect on me. (Hampshires)

Blessex · 17/09/2021 07:17

Oh gosh I love Boden! Always buy on discount. They have great jeans this season with all the new latest cuts, swimwear always good, good quality cotton white t shirts that aren’t see through. Their cashmere is super soft. Love their jewellery and earrings.

Love that description, I can’t stand the “fun prints” Boden love so much.
habibihabibi · 17/09/2021 11:42

The trousers and shorts ( though they fucked them up last summer ) are the only thing I buy now. The swimwear used to be good but its slipped into the quality of supermarket lycra yet costs a bomb.
Even the kids clothes are off now - M&S is better and less pricey.

ZenNudist · 17/09/2021 11:51

I used to spend a fortune twice a year and have older boden stuff that really lasted. Now the quality has gone, the prints are garish and the cuts are soooo frumpy.

It's like the opposite of updating your wardrobe. Acquire expensive clothes that instantly make you look much older than you are and like you have zero grasp of what is fashionable of flattering.

user1471523870 · 17/09/2021 11:51

I buy a lot for my son and the quality and patterns are great.
However, I never bought anything for myself. It's mostly the patterns and the cuts that are not my thing. Perhaps I will try some of their silks or cashmeres...

PlinkPlankPlunk · 17/09/2021 11:53

I have a lot of Boden in my wardrobe (the old stuff lasts well!) but I haven’t bought anything from them for ages.

Do they still do the Ravello top - slightly fitted with a sort-of gathered neck and satiny finish? I love them for work; have at least four and they are years old

foxgoosefinch · 17/09/2021 12:01

They seem to have made another big price hike - I stopped buying their women’s stuff years ago (last time they hiked their prices iirc), and now only buy occasional kids’ items on sale.

IMO quite a few retailers seem to have decided that now is the time to recoup some of their Covid losses by hiking prices. I’m not sure it’s going to work for them, though.

I also hate the “jolly print” look! Some of their patterns and appliqué things I can’t imagine any adult women wearing, but they do seem to sell 🤷‍♀️ I clearly don’t move in the right circles! 😆

Thetrainisinthestation · 17/09/2021 12:02

I just ordered some basics as I wanted good quality vests and they’ve arrived and say made in China on them.
Not impressed

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 17/09/2021 12:04

If you need any more reasons not to shop at Boden, check this out:

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 17/09/2021 12:09

It used to be my go to for blazers, their 7/8 trousers and bretons. The quality of all has declined and the prices have gone up.

A few years back it was the main place I shopped, however i can't now remember the last time I made a purchase.

Thetrainisinthestation · 17/09/2021 12:13

Can anyone recommend a good alternative for high quality basics like tank top vests?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 17/09/2021 12:38

Arket, Cos?

idontlikealdi · 17/09/2021 12:42

They got too populate, reduced their quality and increased the price point. Ditto Joules.

Tibtab · 17/09/2021 12:46

I agree with the Joules comment too, even in the sale the prices are still high and the quality doesn’t match!

MissL85 · 17/09/2021 12:52

I used to buy a lot of my workwear from there. It is expensive but they were nice clothes. A lot of their dresses are very similar in style and I don't always like the designs. It's a shame they don't do maternity clothes.
