Want a Green Dress

Hello,

I'm hoping you wonderful mumsnettets can help me. I have just been given a date for my sons First Holy Communion. It's in 3 weeks... Yikes. My favourite colour is green and it suits me so would love a dress in that colour.

I'm 5ft 4 and a size 12,big bust so need a V neck or of the shoulder. I love wrap dresses as they suit me. Jumpsuits so long as they are made well. Skater styles or anything to busy is a no.

Please help me find something.

Some of these are Lovely. I have to be honest I’d not be going to my sons first holy communion on an off the shoulder wrap dress though. Chapel is usually quite conservative 😃

Bluntness100 · 03/09/2021 16:57
I have this and it is gorgeous on, in a beautiful fabric www.hobbs.com/product/tara-dress/0220-5437-3655L00-FIELD-GREEN.html#cgid=clothing-dresses-green&is=false&sz=60&start=0&isSecondPage=false&pid=0220-5437-3655L00-FIELD-GREEN&pos=12
@DGFB, what’s the sizing like on that if you don’t mind me asking. It’s gorgeous and I’m really tempted.

Ellarain · 03/09/2021 18:01

@Bluntness100, really why? The sacraments are a celebration. Do you attend church regularly?

Thank you for all your suggestions, some beautiful dresses, unfortunately not all of them suit my figure. I do love the calypso one and the first one from Shein, they are my style.

Re: the Hobbs dress, I’m a 12 but bought a 10 and it is snug. Wish I’d bought a 12. I’d say it’s true to size

Love a vintage style. I'm a very hourglass shape size 12.

@GuyFawkesDay, absolutely gorgeous but wouldn't suit me. I need something straight and cut on the bias.

bobbeebob · 03/09/2021 19:49

Definitely try Shein. The sizing is generous. Ive recently bougjt a couple things in green

Ellarain · 03/09/2021 20:01

@bobbeebob, I seen a lovely green dress but was wary because of sizing, might take a chance.

Do you like lace deesses

Graphista · 03/09/2021 20:26

I just bought and wore this one recently

https://www.kaleidoscope.co.uk/products/together-abstract-floral-print-faux-wrap-dress//A-92E51338?searchResults=true&PFMrsn=search&PFMMref=false&PFMpsp=own&PFMMlpn=81&PFMtrm=green+dress

Beautiful and comfy on and while it has a v neck it's cut/stitched so no accidental wardrobe malfunctions (I'm a 40 h you should be fine)

Kinda miffed it's cheaper now Grin

Ellarain · 03/09/2021 20:27

I love lace but they don't usually stretch to my figure. I'm not big by any means but my chest is 34gg so I dress for that.

Ellarain · 03/09/2021 20:28

@Graphista,link not working

Chocolateteabag · 03/09/2021 20:30

I bought this one in black from La Redoute - only a 10 left in the green but it is a generous size so worth a try?

Graphista · 03/09/2021 20:30

Have to say I agree with @Bluntness100 you may need to be careful on the bare shoulders/too revealing side of things depends on the chapel/priest but generally it's a no no to have bare shoulders, too low cut etc

My mums chapel would certainly not be happy.

Oblomov21 · 03/09/2021 20:39

Watching. I too need a green dress.

Speaking as someone who grew up Catholic and is now very much not religious... it's expected in any church I've ever been in that people wouldn't wear off the shoulder dresses. I mean I happily would but that's because I'm not religious so don't care but assuming you are religious, I'm surprised you're surprised someone has questioned whether it's the 'done thing' to wear off the shoulder stuff in church?

Ellarain · 03/09/2021 20:46

@Graphista,I worship at a Church and not a Chapel, there's a difference.
@youvegottenminuteslynn,nah,never heard of that. Have you ever watched "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". Your opinion is very dated. There is no dress code. Brides wear strapless dresses.

OP posts:
youvegottenminuteslynn · 03/09/2021 21:04

As I said, I grew up in church and also said it was my own experience of churches I've been in, not everyone's. I haven't been to a 'big fat gypsy wedding' style wedding no and didn't realise they were held in traditional churches.

I was just sharing my own experience, no need to be snarky about it - I'm surprised someone religious has 'never heard' about churches where strapless dresses are not the norm.

I would wear a minidress if I wanted because I'm not religious so no judgement here Grin

PaleGreenGhost · 03/09/2021 21:15
Not a wrap dress but I recently bought this, very generous on the boobs, elasticated waist v flattering and comfy, great sleeves. Might come up long on you, it's a gorgeous jewelly shade of green: www.zara.com/uk/en/pleated-dress-p09878151.html?v1=108949265
Oh wow that's a beautiful dress.

I really really wish Zara would show some diversity of size in their models. I really struggle to work out how that dress would translate onto me. I know returns exist but they are time consuming.

Confusedandshaken · 03/09/2021 21:24

I'm a Catholic. I've been to many many FHCs. Off the shoulder in church is a definite no-no. Quite apart from anything else you might well be freezing. If you go for that style you would need a jacket or a wrap, for, the service.

It's been about 15 years since I was in church and you've just reminded me how cold the temperature always was - so true!
PegasusReturns · 03/09/2021 21:32

I’m not religious but have been to multiple communions in Irish Catholic Churches (U.K. and Ireland) and off the shoulder has be at been an issue. They tend to be very glamorous events.

The only time I’ve ever experienced an objection to bare shoulders was in a Catholic Church in Italy.

Ellarain · 03/09/2021 21:37

Just stop. I'm am Irish Catholic. There is no dress code. I don't know what Church's you all attend. All our sacraments are glamorous affairs and a celebration. I have never heard of anybody been turned away because of what they wear. My sister in law wore a strapless fishtail wedding gown. Our Church is definately not cold. Please don't comment when you are ignorant
