80’s Make-up; wasn’t it great!

Nostalgia from another thread.
Anyone remember multiple eyeshadows?! I used to have bonkers palettes and do mad combinations e.g inner corner would be fluorescent pink, middle would be shimmer, outer purple - normally set in stone with wetted brush! Then crease emphasised with deeper colour and brow bone highlighted with more shimmer. Coloured mascara was a thing plus I may have had matching eyebrows on occasion! However, I was on the London club scene. As for clothes . . . I yanked myself into a black, PVC dress (talcum powder involved - then baby oil) - then was too chicken shit to take my coat off. Sigh. I would love to yell at my younger self - ‘you look amazing - get that coat off!!’ (plus that’s the last time you’ll ever be able to pull off a size 6 latex dress Hmm)

I'm too young to properly contribute anything (though I love the 80s Goth looks!), but lipcote is still around (I use it, though it freaking stings!) and Barry M have colour changing lipsticks which are actually quite good.

And Rimmel used to have a dark forest green mascara that would quite nice on someone really fair (you can't really notice it on my dark eyelashes/ dark eye colour combo).

MrsCatE · 30/08/2021 22:27

Eek! Omit the ‘and’ from Vidal Sassoon!

I remember wearing coloured mascara and kohl inside the eyelashes. I remember a bourjois eyeshadow which was green with gold flecks and I applied it like a water colour. I also remember yellow and green lipstick. I was more into fashion than make up although I did my friend's make up when we went clubbing.

Noapplejustcrumble · 30/08/2021 22:29

And flavoured lip gloss with a rollerball top.

5128gap · 30/08/2021 22:35

Shaders and toners temporary hair colour! I used a red one on my very blonde hair because I wanted to look like my girl crush who had a beautiful burgundy bob. (She also had a tiny wicker basket for a handbag and allegedly knew Duran Duran). My hair turned pink so I styled it out like Toyah. And I got a wicker basket. Never met Duran Duran though. Sad

Sisisimone · 30/08/2021 22:37

You were nobody at school without a Boots 17 Twilight Teaser lipstick!
God I loved Twilight Teaser. I think that's the make up item that reminds me most of the 80s. Constance Carroll did a similar one called Candy Floss.

5128gap · 30/08/2021 22:39

@MrsCatE

You. Are. My. People, yup *@5128gap* re fashion and makeup. The fun was in getting ready to go out. I used to model for Vidal and Sassoon (hair shows, not editorial) so always had bonkers hair too.
I loved getting ready playing Party Fears two by the Associates over and over by leaving the arm off the record player. A hair model! I would have killed for that, the glamour!
threestars · 30/08/2021 22:43

Yes to Twilight Teaser, blue eyeliner and electric blue mascara.
Also remember my bright pink mini- stilettos covered with black lace, circa Desperately Seeking Susan times.

MrsCatE · 30/08/2021 23:01

Oh God the music too! I was a massive clubber and first real boyfriend was a DJ so got in everywhere. How I was wish I wasn’t ‘too cool’ to pretend I wasn’t (double negative, I know) amazed to rub shoulders with A listers - think Bowie etc - but why I never jumped Prince is my biggest regret.

Loved Twilight Teaser but the absolute must have lipstick amongst my friends was “Iron Lady” from Miss Selfridge. Bonus points if you also had the white dressing gown with fuchsia pink lipstick kisses pattern on it!

Early 80’s, I was desperate to be a New Romantic. Still have an appreciation for Vivienne Westwood clothes & think men in make up look fantastic from that era.

School discos in the early 80’s required either ra-ra skirt, tight satin trousers or skinny jeans with coloured piping along the outer side seam. If you were sophisticated (!) you opted for a winged eyeliner & a Constance Carroll Coca Cola lipgloss (from a glass rollerball).

My own personal fashion journey went through Kids from Fame (slashed neck grey sweatshirt, leg warmers); Wham-ette (white everything, lots of neon); first foray into going out-out wearing white skirts with pastel jackets worn with the sleeves rolled, hair scrunch dried & crispy, big plastic earrings, armfuls of bangles & stilettos & make up best described as “explosion in a paint factory”; before finally ending the decade in full Indie Kid: Doc Martens, band tees, hair usually coloured with either Shaders & Toners or coloured mousse in a copper colour, M&S “grandad” cardigan & Oxfam shop dresses. Lashings of black eyeliner & mascara & deep red lipstick. Absolutely had a blast!

Ticksallboxes · 30/08/2021 23:43

From about 14 to 20 years old in the 80s I would get up at 7am and wash and blow dry my long hair. I'd then apply full foundation, blusher and lipstick then use blue eyeshadow on my lids, dark brown in the crease and cream shimmer on the brown bone plus mascara. It was never blended as the idea was that you were supposed to see all the colours used!!

It never seemed a chore - it was just what we did!

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 30/08/2021 23:49

Miss Selfridge make-up was fantastic - really flattering & interesting colours. I wish I could remember the names...

mrstibbles · 30/08/2021 23:52

I think I remember miss selfridge make up- white with red lips logo? Lipsticks called copperknockers and Iron Lady where my faves Smile

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/08/2021 23:58

I had blue mascara, a brown lipstick from Helena Rubinstein, remember them? They were ahead of times and did a fabulous cleansing oil, when no one else did.

And the stripy blusher.

I also had a bright teal miniskirt, worn with two mesh t shirts and no bra. Loved that outfit.

TheQueef · 31/08/2021 09:05

Toyah is on BBC breakfast now.
She looks fucking Amazing! But you can still see the telltale blusher strip she learnt back then Grin

FreekStar2 · 31/08/2021 09:28

Frosted pink lipstick and blue and purple eyeshadow from Constance Carrol. Blue eyeliner and mascara too!

WhoppingBigBackside · 31/08/2021 13:49

Helena Rubinstein makeup was great

Lifetheuniverseandeverything · 31/08/2021 17:37

Oh wow I had completely forgotten about the colour change lipsticks!

Lupinhere37 · 31/08/2021 18:20

Goodness; the colour change lipsticks. I was desperate for one but never had one.
I was all about the Heather Shimmer and the Boots roller lip gloss, that my hair stuck to on windy days.
Also, the Shaders and Toners Mahogany hair colour. My mum would never let me use Sun In though I thought it looked amazing. I also had a load of brightly coloured big bows tied in my hair, Madonna style.
And the batwing sleeves that you’d never get a coat over properly. Hilarious!
Best of all was the white eye liner, to apparently make my eyes look bigger. Looked quite the business with the Royal Blue mascara.

BeaucoupFish · 31/08/2021 18:25

Does anyone remember the Miss Selfridge eyeshadows in a little glass tube with an applicator in the screw Lid? They used to do a fabulous intense pearly highlighter I used to stock up on when I went into Southampton

I can remember the taste of that mint rollerball lip gloss so clearly now! And yes to the sticking to your hair. This thread has taken me back nearly 40 years, so vividly.
Tomasinabombadil · 31/08/2021 18:47

I was in my 30’s in the 1980’s. Didn’t wear much make-up except for a bit of lippy and Bourjois electric blue or green lagoon mascaras.🙂

Dragonfly97 · 31/08/2021 18:52

Had a fab time in the 80s; creative makeup looks with Miss Selfridge Doris Karloff lipstick ( bright red), fuchsia lipstick Cerise Eclipse by Rimmel, crimped hair, baggy black trousers, Miners eyeshadow palettes in shades of hot pink, a dark blue lipstick called Key Largo; can't remember who made it; black lace tights, the Goth look, New Romantics, men in makeup, guyliner!! Good times! I had a tweed overcoat from Cafe Society in Chester, an "alternative" shop as we called them then!

Warmduscher · 31/08/2021 19:55

@Noapplejustcrumble

Omg yes!

And Iron Lady lipstick from Miss Selfridge (metallic purple). I looked amazing Grin

DownyEmerald · 31/08/2021 20:05

There was a Just 17 makeup I did all the time. Silver White in inner corner, bright pink in the middle and a fantastic bright deep blue outer corner. Did it so much I had to replace the blue. Happy memories! Thanks OP
