80’s Make-up; wasn’t it great!

Nostalgia from another thread.
Anyone remember multiple eyeshadows?! I used to have bonkers palettes and do mad combinations e.g inner corner would be fluorescent pink, middle would be shimmer, outer purple - normally set in stone with wetted brush! Then crease emphasised with deeper colour and brow bone highlighted with more shimmer. Coloured mascara was a thing plus I may have had matching eyebrows on occasion! However, I was on the London club scene. As for clothes . . . I yanked myself into a black, PVC dress (talcum powder involved - then baby oil) - then was too chicken shit to take my coat off. Sigh. I would love to yell at my younger self - ‘you look amazing - get that coat off!!’ (plus that’s the last time you’ll ever be able to pull off a size 6 latex dress Hmm)

Spiral perms - I loved mine! I bunked off school for the day to get mine done in 1988 - cost me £44 which seemed like so much at the time as a 15 year old.
I remember using Studio Line gelling curls on it as it made my hair super shiny, also Insette hairspray too.
Make up wise I had a thing for brown eyeshadow and red lipstick. Used to use Lipcote to keep it on.

Mid 80s Bourjois did an amazing thingy called Blanc de Base which looking back was probably some sort of proto-primer. It was fabulous. Bourjois little pot eyeshadows, had a slate grey one. Also Bourjois lipsticks. I needed one like Wendy James in Transvision Vamp (a kind of matte flat shocking pink) Almay matte foundation bizarrely called "Rachel" and spray in purple bits for my hair.

Geamhradh · 30/08/2021 18:31

I still use Lipcote now I'm old and decrepit and lipstick "feathers" if I don't!

Durbeyfield · 30/08/2021 18:33

Blue mascara!!! It was fab!!

Durbeyfield · 30/08/2021 18:34

And lots of ivory highlighter in the brow bone

Durbeyfield · 30/08/2021 18:35

I don’t think we worried too much about eyebrows. We didn’t have micro blading etc then and they just sort of did their thing.

FindingMeno · 30/08/2021 18:38

Not for me and my mates @Durbeyfield!
We plucked to the thinnest line possible.
No false eyelashes or nails though.

rosegoldwatcher · 30/08/2021 18:38

Spray starch to keep your Durannied hair peaks standing to attention.

FindingMeno · 30/08/2021 18:39

I wanted to be able to make myself up like Toyah.

megletthesecond · 30/08/2021 18:40

Miners eyeshadow kits. NO photos survive thank goodness.

fairyhouse · 30/08/2021 18:42

OMG you just brought back memories of heather shimmer lippy! Also used to love my Rimmel electric blue mascaraGrin

JustWhatIAlwaysWanted · 30/08/2021 19:12

I decided I would actually buy some blue mascara again a few months ago. It was harder than I thought. You used to also be able to get brown or brown/black mascara but now it's rows of endless black. Anyway, got an Extreme Colour Lengthening one from Boots and it's just a joy on some days to brighten myself up with it.

SalsaLove · 30/08/2021 19:14

I recently saw a picture of Joan Collins from her Dynasty days and thought her beauty was diminished by so much make up.

TopTabby · 30/08/2021 19:22

You were nobody at school without a Boots 17 Twilight Teaser lipstick!
I also had the Bon Bon one but only because I loved Simon Le Bon so much!Blush
I remember an Iced Champink lipstick from Avon too.
All looked fab with electric blue eyeliner & mascara...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/08/2021 19:24

When I had long hair and the crimping irons were the rage (and of course I didn't have any Hmm ) plaiting damp hair into dozens of thin plaits , tieing the ends with a strip of fabric cut from old tights, leave overnight .
Next day , run your fingers through the plaits to loosen (but don't brush) and off you go Grin

It looked different to crimped though .And took forever .

lucillevanpelt · 30/08/2021 19:30

The Boots “Real girls wear 17” advert campaign from mid 80s (I think) shows the creativity so well. I found it completely inspiring! Someone has collected them here: [https://www.ghostofthedoll.co.uk/retromusings/17-cosmetics-real-girls-wear-adverts-1980s/]

Noshowwithoutpunch · 30/08/2021 19:32

I loved Constant Caroll eyeshadow and the pearly pink nail varnish.
Loved Cafe au lait shimmery lipstick but think that may have been 90s.
Nightmusk talc from Avon was awesome.

Craftycorvid · 30/08/2021 19:34

You can still buy Lipcote? Shock

Thanks for the wonderful nostalgia! I still love a good eyeshadow palette (my current one is a Kat Von D one in subtle tones) - I too used to go in for fuchsia pink eyeshadow, a big stripe of blusher and hair back-combed to oblivion and sprayed with glitter. Grin

5128gap · 30/08/2021 20:02

Vivid blue eyeliner in the waterline with matching mascara. 3 shades of pink eye shadow, one on the lid two on the brow bone. Cerise blusher in a thick stripe in the hollows made by sucking in the cheeks. Cerise wet look lipstick.
Permed hair bleached to white candy floss, then back combed with a scarf tied into a big bow on top. All to complement the Ra ra skirt, ankle warmers and elbow length fishnet fingerless gloves.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 30/08/2021 20:39

I used to buy Sensiq in the marble effect packaging. And Beauty Without Cruelty eyeshadow. Remember little pots of fruity lip balm from Body Shop. I drenched myself with Impulse body spray for school and Poison perfume.

Durbeyfield · 30/08/2021 22:00

Fall down socks ( anyone else remember them?)
3/4 length trousers
Herringbone overcoats from Chelsea Girl
Ski pants (from Kensington Market)
White Musk from the Body Shop
Very pale pearlescent nail varnish
Boots 17 make up
Let’s forget the crap stilettos with stretch jeans

I remember fall down socks! So much more practical than leg warmers! Herringbone coat too! Though mine was a man's from the charity shop, absolutely huge. I wore a wide brown leather belt round the waist.
Durbeyfield · 30/08/2021 22:15

5128Gap - belts were always worn in the 80’s, I wore wide leather belts around my jeans pulled in reeeally tight all the time… fingerless gloves were also worn by everyone I knew…

MrsCatE · 30/08/2021 22:23

You. Are. My. People, yup @5128gap re fashion and makeup. The fun was in getting ready to go out. I used to model for Vidal and Sassoon (hair shows, not editorial) so always had bonkers hair too.
