Leopard print: yes or no?

MareofBeasttown · 23/08/2021 12:34

I like it when I see it on other people, but on me it always looks tacky and a tad cheap ( Also DH starts meowing when I come into the room). But it is so popular these days that I can't get away from it.

I am 49, 5"7 and a size 10-12 if that helps. I am wary of sounding ageist but it does seem to look better on DD, 20, and a size 4-6.

I am 31 and love leopard print, have worn it for a few years! I have blouses/dresses/skirts in it. Dh hates it Grin
If you don't feel comfortable wearing it then don't. Wear what you feel happy and confident in?

travailtotravel · 23/08/2021 12:42

Less is more, I think. Head to toe, less appealing. Strategic item - lovely.

I have animal print jegging, Love em, but only wear with plain black top and flats.

I need to learn to apply the same to my love of things glittery, tbh.

MareofBeasttown · 23/08/2021 12:43

Oh yes, of course I do wear what I am comfortable in, but there seem to be only 3 options for prints in the shops: stripes, florals and leopard print. I am carrying most of my weight around my belly because I am menopausal, so am not sure about stripes and large florals any more either.

You could start with a scarf or some ballet flats to ease yourself in. I am about your age and find it easier to carry off in wide leg trousers or a skirt than a top for some reason.

NothingEverChangesButTheShoes · 23/08/2021 12:51

I am a manic street preachers fan. I only own leaopard print coats or leather jackets. They're very cool. I say DO IT.

MareofBeasttown · 23/08/2021 12:59

Leopard print ballet flats are a great idea. I also saw some leopard print trainers recently. Really looked good with dark trousers.

I wear leopard print like a neutral and I absolutely bloody LOVE it.

I think it’s about finding the right kind of leopard print for you - there are lots of leopard prints that I don’t like as I find that they look a bit cheap or the colour just isn’t quite to my taste. Look around a bit and start small - as PPs have said maybe some shows, or even just a belt or hairband to ease you in. Slowly grow your confidence and ignore your meowing husband!

BrilliantBetty · 23/08/2021 13:10

Only in small doses.
I'm 30 and when I see older ladies in it if i'm honest I do think it looks a little.. tasteless maybe even tacky (sorry I know that's horribly judgemental).

A small leopard print belt or little detail like that could look v nice though. My 65+ mother has two leopard print lines on her white trainers and they look pretty cool actually. To my surprise. With jeans the shoes look great.

malificent7 · 23/08/2021 16:50

I love it and do not care if it looks " tacky." It's effortlessly cool at any age.

Salanda · 23/08/2021 17:10

I like it! It’s like anything though and can be done differently/give a different vibe depending on how it’s worn. I was lusting over this (but didn’t get it!) last winter: charlottesimone.com/products/dotty-jacket-leopard

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/08/2021 17:15

I'm not generally a fan, but I have a pair of leopard print flats I quite like peeping out from under jeans or my plain black jumpsuit - adds a bit of interest, I think.

And I ummed and ahhed over a Biba Leopard print coat in the House of Fraser sale for ages. Couldn't decide whether it was a brilliant statement piece or just a bit tacky!

Sorry, that's no help is it??! 😆

TheStarMachine · 23/08/2021 17:25

I LOVE leopard print (also a Manics fan) and agree it is a neutral. I'm old enough that I probably look a bit Bet Lynch on occasion but it makes me happy! If you son't want to look OTT then a quality leopard print blouse with black trousers seems to work?

Confusedandshaken · 23/08/2021 17:26

I love leopard print but you have to pace yourself. I have enough leopard that I could go out in leopard print boots/shoes, jeggings, top, cardigan, dress, hat, jacket/coat, face mask, gloves, handbag and watch strap all at once. Obviously I don't but I have to do a routine mirror check to ensure I have committed the fashion faux pas of double leopard!

Ninkanink · 23/08/2021 17:28

It’s nothing at all to do with age. It’s much more to do with what item, what type of leopard print, and how it’s worn.

If you do it right it looks great. If not...it doesn’t!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/08/2021 17:28

It's this coat, btw: www.houseoffraser.co.uk/brand/biba/biba-leopard-faux-fur-coat-ladies-668123

OP, hope you don't mind me piggybacking onto to your thread, but I'd love to gather some opinions on it - I'm still quite tempted!

Branleuse · 23/08/2021 17:31

Why does your husband mock you when you wear it? Thats shitty of him.

im of the "leopard print is a neutral" camp. Ive always liked it.
Tiger print is also fab.

I think its so versatile. You can make it look smart, sexy, punky anything

MareofBeasttown · 23/08/2021 18:03

Honestly the DH mention is lighthearted. He doesn't like leopard print but I don't like several of his clothes either! He doesn't do it in a controlling way.
Greebol, I am on the fence about that coat! Not for my staid work from home life, but it would look great for a posh party or premiere, I think.

Completely agree. Head to toe would be ridiculous but it’s such a good way of adding a bit of pizazz. Among my many leopard print items, my favourite is a pill box hat. My trainers come in a close second.
Bluntness100 · 23/08/2021 18:10

Is it everywhere? I thought it had died out, I never see it.

I’m not a fan, I’m of the bet lynch era so can’t get that connotation out of my mind,

Blossomtoes · 23/08/2021 18:16

If it’s good enough for Kate ...

Leopard print: yes or no?
Dontfuckingsaycheese · 23/08/2021 18:21

@Confusedandshaken lol at "double leopard". I have been a little guilty of this I'm afraid!! Black leopard print tights, leopard boots, giraffe print (🤗) skirt. And a white blouse with black leopards drawn on it. It was subtle-ish. Only noticeable if you were really paying attention. I work at a college. I did ask them if I was a bit too animal!!

I think the coat is gorgeous!

It's way more toned down and wearable than my leopard fur coat. Which is really bright with a light pink fluffy collar 😂

Janaih · 23/08/2021 18:28

My wardrobe is at least 50% leopard print. Love it.

Jerseygirl12 · 23/08/2021 18:31

I like it, I wear mine with bright colours or even a clashing pattern. I don’t overthink what I wear and like to try different looks.

daisyjgrey · 23/08/2021 18:32

Leopard is a neutral. I will die on this hill.
