Do you have a “wash & go” hair cut?

I’m really fed up with my hair. I hate having to style it or do anything to it most days. I just wash it, run a comb through it and go. It air dries 9/10 days unless I am meeting a friend for lunch and doing make up etc. Until a couple of months ago it was shoulder blade length and I was just scraping it back into a ponytail or bun. It didn’t suit me and just liked awful. So I got it chopped to how it is now and I think it’s even worse. (Photos attached- washed it last night and just went to bed. Didn’t even brush it. Ran a brush through this morning) When blow dried and straightened it looks lovely. There is a full fringe and the cut is quite blunt across the bottom. But I have no idea what I need to do to make it look nice when dried naturally. I think the layers age me. Do I need to grow them out and have it cut all one length at chin length? Or do I need more layers? Confused Or do I need to get it cut very short? I really would love to look good with a wash and go cut. Alternatively does anyone have any recommendations for low maintenance styles and products?

A long pixie might suit you better? A short pixie needs real titivation, a longer one you would just about smooth the front down and run out the door.

CirqueDeMorgue · 11/08/2021 19:33

It looks really healthy!

I go to the barber and cut a number 3 on the sides, scissors on top. I get it cut every 5 to 6 weeks but it's £13 and very low maintenance.

SuzieTu · 11/08/2021 19:42

Are the layers a little short maybe? What if you keep the layers but grow it all in length?
That way it’s still got movement less heavy due to layers but not as choppy.

I’ve googled. They look lovely. I’ve never been that short but if it makes it easier to manage I’m up for anything.

Thank you. I think because I don’t blow dry it anymore it’s in better condition.

I don’t know. I’ve no idea anymore what I need to do with it Grin

I had a shortish bob, I was growing my hair but cut it off again yesterday. The back and sides are very short and I left the top a bit longer. Its very easy to look after.

kowari · 11/08/2021 19:59

They cut it to two fingers with scissors, so less than two inches, not sure exactly how long as it's been a few weeks now.

DelurkingAJ · 11/08/2021 20:01

I have what I describe as a swing bob. Single length, doesn’t quite reach my shoulders. Outside of the hairdresser I haven’t used a hairdryer or straighteners in more than a decade…

SuperSketchy · 11/08/2021 20:01

Do you know, I had a really similar cut a few weeks ago. I wanted layers through it and something a bit shaggy looking. I didn't love it. It was a bit..mullety maybe on me. Anyway, it's grown out a little bit and I absolutely love it now. I think new layers take a bit of settling in time. I'm leaving it a bit longer between cuts and I'm going to ask my hair dresser to leave the layers longer this time.

MotionActivatedDog · 11/08/2021 20:17

I think I either need to grin and bear it while the layers grow long enough for me to have it cut all one length like what @DelurkingAJ describes or go for a long pixie type cut. How to decide.

I know you don't want this, but I have found that this style needs volume at the roots (assuming it's similar to mine). So, I'm sorry to say I've had to wash it a bit more and also dry it with a bit of product and turn my head upside down. It seems to make a difference. On non washing days, I use a texturising spray.

MotionActivatedDog · 11/08/2021 20:31

Thanks @SuperSketchy. I know I’m never going to be bothered with that much effort so I need to have a cut that doesn’t require any of it.

Yep, I shaved my head to a number 3! I had a pixie before that. I found the pixie quite high maintenance from about a month after being cut because the back would need trimming and it would start looking bulky and shapeless pretty quickly. I think a long bob that’s all one length (no layers and no fringe) would probably be the lowest maintenance in terms of letting it dry and fall naturally, but I have thick hair with a natural wave so I’m only going by my personal hair experience. Obviously a buzz cut is a drastic solution and not for everyone but I love it!

Malin52 · 11/08/2021 20:37

I went from Long hair to short pixie. Best thing I've EVER done. It takes years off me, is slimming but best of all takes seconds to dry then A bit of product and out the door.

Malin52 · 11/08/2021 20:38

Sorry. Long pixie

GoWalkabout · 11/08/2021 20:57

If you have a bit of a natural wave then just wash and put leave in conditioner in (don't sleep on it wet though) don't comb or brush it just leave it alone but can slightly shape by running fingers through. Might need to be a straighter cut though I'm not sure.

leafinthewind · 11/08/2021 21:20

Long pixie here too. Long fringe/on top, and very short around my ears. No effort at all. As it grows out between six and eight weeks after a cut, I very occasionally use a bit of wax. But I never dry it, ever style it beyond that. The only downside is that it needs cutting every 8 weeks absolute max.

TonkaTrucker · 11/08/2021 21:48

I've had every hair length possible. Long pixie is harder to 'wash n go' than short pixie in my experience.
From looking at the photos I would recommend cutting some length off so you have a blunt bob. Blunt bob and fringe.
If it doesn't work for you you can always go for a pixie if that's what you fancy as you're still leaving yourself that option.
I have all one length bob down to about my mouth level (when freshly cut) and a blunt fringe at the mo and it's a great wash n go haircut. If it goes all wavy/big/slept in it looks like it's meant to be doing that and if it ends up straight that's fine too. It's my favourite haircut in ages.

lazylinguist · 11/08/2021 22:12

I've recently had mine cut into a long pixie after ages of having mid bob to shoulder length. I also had some highlights put in. I absolutely love it, and I'm very low maintenance. It looks fine without blow drying, but better with. Blob of mousse, blow dry upside down, curl ends under a bit. Takes 2 mins.

badg3r · 11/08/2021 22:41

I had a long pixie a while ago. I really liked it but my hair has a bit of a wave like yours and if I didn't straighten the fringe it looked terrible.

TigersandTeddybears · 11/08/2021 22:47

I would either go shorter, like a crop or pixie cut, or all one length.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 11/08/2021 22:51

Mine is buzzed to #2 on the sides and longer on top. It looks fucking awesome, if I do say so myself. I wash'n'go, or just ruffle it up with some texturising paste.
