Are sandals gone out of fashion?

I always wear sandals in summer, usually gabor or rieker with a bit of a heel. I paint toenails a bright colour. I wear for work and also if I am in town on annual leave. I have flatter sandals for if I am on holiidays. I wear them with a capri trousers and a nice cotton top. I wear this for work and at home in the summer.

Recently I have noticed that a lot of other women my age (late 40s) are wearing a chunky white runner with leggings.

I love the feeling of air on my toes. Weather is often dull but clammy so I would hate toes to be enclosed. Also as I am only 5ft 3, I love having a small heel.

If I wore leggings at the weekend for errands then my normal tops don't work well and I would need a sports top and runners. Also, as I look my age and a bit square/untrendy I am afraid I would look too 'try hard'.

What does everyone else wear in summer?

Depends where you are living been non stop rain & only about a week of sunshine so nope sandals have not really been worn this year. Again depends what job you in but city air con offices with meeting generally open sandals woukd be frowned upon. Wear what you feel happy in

No idea if they are fashionable bit I've switched my summer shoe to Toms pumps...they are just ridiculously comfy and lightweight enough that feet don't feel sweaty unless uts sweltering.

Been a boon in lockdown times as they can be worn around the house like a slipper almost, but also outside

Do you wear socks with the trainers?

lazylinguist · 05/08/2021 21:26

I wear trainer socks with them, so they're not visible.

Birkies all the way here as long as I can! 🩴🩴🩴🩴

Oh I'm also loving the (whisper it) Crocs this year! 🤣🐊🐊🐊

I love flat leather sandals. Nothing with a toe-post though, toe-posts give me the willies. Love the feeling of the sun on my toes. Have been wearing these comfy Fit Flop ones a lot this summer.

@RampantIvy

Please do link some sandals that would be suitable for walking for, say, at least a couple of hours and won’t rub/give blisters.
I love sandals but, apart from specialised walking/hiking sandals, I’ve never found any that don’t cause me pain in some way - either the aforementioned blisters or else the arch of my foot starts to hurt from gripping them if they don’t have a strap at the back of the foot.

I walk literally everywhere (I live in a city) so can easily be walking for a few hours a day. But I also want to wear my pretty summer dresses and need footwear that goes with them. Hence the trainers!!

As for the discomfort of wearing closed-in shoes in the heat, the 90% of so of the men I see wearing closed-in shoes don’t seem to care. I reckon many of them are like my DH who tried sandals once, got blisters and thought sod that, back to my winter shoes 😂

MidnightMeltdown · 05/08/2021 22:54

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I've never liked sandals, partly because I have ugly feet, but also because I never find them comfortable, they always seem to rub my feet and cause blisters. I tend to wear canvas trainers or ballet pumps during summer. Ballet pumps are probably even more out of fashion, but for me they are comfy so I don't care!

Ohbeeryme · 06/08/2021 04:06

I don’t have nice feet, find sandals uncomfortable, and my feet are well taken care of and no dry heels etc until I wear sandals. I’m happy to look like a fashion victim in my white trainers. Fashion has caught up with my needs Wink

@irishgirl2020 - I accidentally bought such hero footwear in summer 2019 from next - tan soft leather flat sandals that I can, and have walked miles and miles in, with perfectly comfy feet.

Unfortunately, the sole is now fucked on one of them, and next aren't doing them anymore. It was good while it lasted !

FredaFox · 06/08/2021 07:54

I've seen tevas worn a lot actually
Meant to be very comfortable
They look like clumpy dad sandals to me but they are pretty trendy I think

RampantIvy · 06/08/2021 08:00

@IrishGirl2020 the ones I linked to upthread, but they may not be to your liking. Here is the link again.

I also like the look of some of the Merrell sandals www.merrell.com/UK/en_GB/womens/#prefn1=itemStyle&prefv1=Sandals

You can tell I'm not very stylish Grin, but when it comes to footwear I have to have something that is comfortable.

FatAnkles · 06/08/2021 08:07

Teen is wearing black converse with skirts and shorts rather than white. Rebel! Smile

I bought some Hotter silver sandals because they are very wide fitting but I know I'm not very fashionable. They are comfy though. Day to day I wear chunky Skechers. Again, not trendy!

Grin Which is precisely why neither DD nor I wanted white trainers. she has these Converse, and I have grey canvas Converse lookalikes which, TBH, aren't all that comfortable.
gogohm · 06/08/2021 08:20

I wear sandals from April until October (barring very wet weather) until it's unseasonably cold

IrishGirl2020 · 06/08/2021 09:44

@RampantIvy

Those are very pretty and I would definitely wear them but almost certainly they would give me blisters as they have just so many straps.
I have had some success with Merrell type sandals before but even those have needed to be broken with a week or so of putting plasters on where they run until the skin thickens up.

I guess my point is to show that we’re not all fashion victims with our white trainers 😂 I just love putting on a pair of shoes and not having to worry about them all day - whether they’re going to rub, have I got a plaster with me if they do etc etc
