Are sandals gone out of fashion?

I always wear sandals in summer, usually gabor or rieker with a bit of a heel. I paint toenails a bright colour. I wear for work and also if I am in town on annual leave. I have flatter sandals for if I am on holiidays. I wear them with a capri trousers and a nice cotton top. I wear this for work and at home in the summer.

Recently I have noticed that a lot of other women my age (late 40s) are wearing a chunky white runner with leggings.

I love the feeling of air on my toes. Weather is often dull but clammy so I would hate toes to be enclosed. Also as I am only 5ft 3, I love having a small heel.

If I wore leggings at the weekend for errands then my normal tops don't work well and I would need a sports top and runners. Also, as I look my age and a bit square/untrendy I am afraid I would look too 'try hard'.

What does everyone else wear in summer?

I'm usually in sandals or flip flops from April until October but this year I've pretty much lived in white pumps or trainers. In my case I don't think it's a conscious 'fashion thing' but more a bit of a lifestyle change linked to being at home more and going out far less. I'd also have sandals out in preparation for a sunny holiday but they're probably less practical for camping in the UK.

Hopefully next year will be the return of the sandal here.

Sandals will never go out of fashion, but different styles will go in and out. For some reason your links aren't working for me OP but sandals with a heel don't sound very "current". If you want to feel more fashionable but need height you could go for a chunkier sole or a platform?

onemorerose · 03/08/2021 23:51

I’d say those sandals are frumpy op, sorry. I’m short and even I have embraced the flat look

Winterjoy · 04/08/2021 00:36

I usually live in sandals all summer but have been reaching for closed shoes so far this year due to the weather - so many rainy and/or changeable days! I think we'll see the usual amount of sandals around when we get some properly hot weather.

GeidiPrimes · 04/08/2021 01:00

Would you wear these OP? I've been dithering whether or not to buy them for myself.

I usually wear birkenstocks and tevas. I bought a pair of Clarks Orinoco (so comfy) this year too. Have a look at Office Shoes and Dune. And ASOS.

I think the ones you posted look very dated, especially for work. But, if you’re comfortable in them don’t worry. Better than being uncomfortable in fashionable shoes.

Mandalay246 · 04/08/2021 06:55

Wear whatever you want OP. Honestly, it really doesn't matter what everyone else is wearing, you need to feel comfortable and confident and if you like wearing sandals then wear them. The only place I wear leggings is to bed, and chunky white trainers do nothing for me (they look fine on other people, but I don't want to wear them myself) and our summers are too hot to want to have my feet enclosed all day.

I wear flip flops all through summer and sketcher trainers if I'm being lazy

Buckleyourseatbelt · 04/08/2021 07:03

I generally wear salt waters (probably frumpy), but they can be too flat for me so I’ve started wearing my white trainers more.

lazylinguist · 04/08/2021 07:47

I agree that heeled sandals seem to be unfashionable. I'm no follower of fashion really, but I only wear Birkenstocks and similar flat sandals. I've also embraced the white trainers thing. I found it a bit weird wearing them with skirts and dresses at first, but I like it now!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 04/08/2021 07:50

i was also spying feet yesterday, buying trainers and yet considering sandals, it is August already, i cant walk so well in sandals

LordOfTheThings · 04/08/2021 07:54

I don't think sandals are out of fashion - I spent the day in Cambridge last week and loads of people had sandals on - mostly flat ones.

KingdomScrolls · 04/08/2021 08:02

I rarely see heeled sandals, flat ones, even flip flops (live near the sea) all the time, but heeled sandals unless for an occasion seem a little dated

MagicSummer · 04/08/2021 08:07

OP - out of all the links to sandals on here, yours are the ONLY ones I like! Who cares about fashion if you like the look and feel comfortable?

I live in Giesswein Runners, winter and summer, apart from very hot days when I wear flip flops. They are made of wool and come in lots of colours. Thoroughly recommend. Very, very comfortable.

I don't think sandals have gone out of fashion that's a sweeping statement! I do think certain styles of sandal are not as trendy as others though.

It seems to be flat forms that are in style now.

Try Teva sandals they're comfy and versatile and on trend at the moment or Birkenstock's (Arizona is my favourite style)

Both of these sandals stand the rest of time and you'll get years out of them.

dottiedodah · 04/08/2021 08:20

Well Im quite envious of you TBH! Have a bad ankle and knee .Due to terrible pain last year, am now stuck in Hotter ankle boots .Wear with trousers and long dresses/skirts .Enjoy while you can!

EllaBlaire · 04/08/2021 08:23

I suspect healed mule sandals will be making a comeback along with other millennium era fashions, amongst young people first and then filtering upwards. So you might be ahead of the game OP!

Trust your instincts. I always admire people with a defined personally style more than people who obsessively wear what’s in fashion even when it doesn’t suit them.

WhoEatsPopTarts · 04/08/2021 08:35

Heeled sandals are out, Dad sandals are in, tevas, Chanel, Birkenstock, dm platform. Basically chunky, masculine, practical and comfortable. This article shows the sort of thing

AbsolutelyPatsy · 04/08/2021 08:38

fashion is just trying to cater for the differing life styles people have now, less going out to work, more working from home.

FullMoonInsomnia · 04/08/2021 08:39

I live in Birkenstock’s but bought some white trainers yesterday. I don’t know why really to be honest, apart from the fact that they are very comfortable. I wouldn’t wear them on hot days though.

@user1471554720 - I honestly think that one positive thing to come out of lockdown is that people are dressing for comfort and not only for style or because they have to (e.g. wear a blouse to work vs wearing a tshirt when working from home).

If wearing those sandals makes you happy and they are comfortable, wear them. Don't give two hoots what anyone else might be or might not be wearing. You do you!

I never wore trainers or tracksuit bottoms to work but I do now because I'm working from home and they are comfortable. I will try and continue wearing the trainers as I believe if your feet hurt throughout the day, you can end up being really cranky and that's the reason.

Crazysheep · 04/08/2021 08:58

I live in havaianas. I wear them with everything
