Are sandals gone out of fashion?

I always wear sandals in summer, usually gabor or rieker with a bit of a heel. I paint toenails a bright colour. I wear for work and also if I am in town on annual leave. I have flatter sandals for if I am on holiidays. I wear them with a capri trousers and a nice cotton top. I wear this for work and at home in the summer.

Recently I have noticed that a lot of other women my age (late 40s) are wearing a chunky white runner with leggings.

I love the feeling of air on my toes. Weather is often dull but clammy so I would hate toes to be enclosed. Also as I am only 5ft 3, I love having a small heel.

If I wore leggings at the weekend for errands then my normal tops don't work well and I would need a sports top and runners. Also, as I look my age and a bit square/untrendy I am afraid I would look too 'try hard'.

What does everyone else wear in summer?

I’m in my 60s and actively avoid Gabor and Rieker as irredeemably frumpy. As others say, if you want a sandal go for flat and chunky. You also need to ditch the Capri trousers and “nice” top. Get some longer, maybe looser trousers and a stylish top.

Oblomov21 · 04/08/2021 09:08

I don't even care if they are out of fashion. How stupid would that be anyway. Love a good flat sandal.

PattyPan · 04/08/2021 09:17

The sandals you linked are frumpy I agree. I wear these which are a little bit like tevas but not ugly.

Crazysheep · 04/08/2021 09:21

@PattyPan I love those. You may not convert the OP but you have me. Maybe a little late in the season for this year but next year with bells on.

Gabor and siebel do have sandals that have a little height but are more on trend. Some of us need the arch support that less trendy makes bring. There is no way I could wear a salt water sandal and I cannot get on with birkies but siebel do something equally fugly that works with my feet.

PostMenWithACat · 04/08/2021 09:27

Swedish Hasbeens are also worth a look and my favourite bobbies which I think may suit the ops style.

sandgrown · 04/08/2021 09:31

I am in my sixties and go for comfort but I bought some Tevas after seeing them in a magazine. I am still waiting for someone to notice how on trend I am! I guess my friends don’t follow fashion . They are comfy though .

The Russell and Bromley Fishermans sandals have been very popular this summer, I was a bit sad they were not in the sale. these ones
You can wear this style with dresses and ankle grazers, shorts or anything really.

Kanaloa · 04/08/2021 10:22

I love those Russell & Bromley ones but nearly £200! Bit steep for my sandal budget I’m afraid.

PostMenWithACat · 04/08/2021 10:27

People always raise an eyebrow over what I spend on shoes but a good shoe that is comfortable can be worn day in and day out and gets worn out. I have friends who spend £35 to £50 on a pair of shoes that is never comfy and hence they will buy 4/5 pairs every summer/winter and end up in trainers or flip-flops because everything else rubs. And they spend more than me.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/08/2021 10:28

I just wear Birkies all the time…

cathyandclare · 04/08/2021 10:47

What about clogs, they're having a bit of a renaissance?

I like a pretty sandal. Not embellished, but nice leather, in a nice colour, or tan, with a bit of a wedge. I can't get on with those clumpy sandals, they are all very well if you have nice slim ankles but on my chunky legs I just look dumpy! I don't care if they are out of fashion. I usually get mine from Clarks or Moda in Pelle.

Links on google don't seem to work

LordOfTheThings · 04/08/2021 14:13

@SalsaLove I don't really agree with this, these are my absolute favourites and they're def not dainty! 🤣

@jamaisjedors

I noticed this OP.

Went to a kind of hip but not smart bar on a hot day. Looked around, i was the only woman wearing sandals. Everyone else was in trainers. I felt frumpy.

I would’ve been there in my Birkenstock Madrids that I’ve worn every summer for the last 12 plus years (not the same pair obvs 😁)
Howshouldibehave · 04/08/2021 14:34

Sandals in summer are never going to be out of fashion! I hate trainers.

I wear either Birkenstocks or flip flops.

IrishGirl2020 · 04/08/2021 14:40

I don’t think sandals are out of fashion but I have stopped wearing them.
Mainly because trainers are so much more comfortable - no strappy bits to cause blisters, can walk miles in them, can drive in them (high heeled or backless sandals meant I always needed a spare pair of shoes in the car to change into).
I think it’s probably just that for most women too - trainers are just more comfortable but don’t necessarily look better. I love the look of sandals but only wear them now on a night out or somewhere I know I won’t be running about much

SalsaLove · 04/08/2021 14:44

I actually like those too! They feel retro.

LordOfTheThings · 04/08/2021 14:46

@SalsaLove they def have a 70s vibe about them but they seem to go with everything! I got them in the sale and I don't think I've ever had so many compliments about a pair of shoes as I have about these. Grin

IrishGirl2020 · 04/08/2021 14:49

In fact to add to my earlier post I would nearly go so far as to say I feel liberated by not feeling I need to wear sandals in the summer anymore. I’m on my feet pretty much all day running around picking up kids, walking to the shops etc. and sandals always seemed to cause blisters or painful rubbing somewhere on my foot at least a few times every summer. They’re also not comfortable for walking long distances unless they’re special walking sandals but those look a bit weird with pretty summer dresses whereas white trainers are fine.
My DH, who never wears sandals, has never understood why I would persist with uncomfortable shoes 😂
I just feel that it’s one less thing to think about - just put on white trainers and go. But I still like a pretty pair of sandals for a night out or on the beach

Toomuchtodoo · 04/08/2021 15:08

Who wants to wear white closed in trainers in the heat?
It's madness.

And for what - all so we won't look dated?
I've noticed round my way (comuter town) even younger women seem to be wearing sandals with their dresses, especially on hot days.
I see one or two women with the white trainer/summer dress look and I feel sorry for them.
Their feet must be hot and sweaty.
It also looks a bit too try hard.

I agree. My feet don't look that great but I make sure I have nail polish on and try to wear sandals with more coverage.

I love my trainers for walking and running but if I'm wearing a cool summer dress, I also want something cool on my feet.

BountyIsUnderrated · 04/08/2021 15:16

I only wear sandals if going to the pool or at the beach.
I found on holiday its much more comfortable to wear trainers with dresses as we tend to go on lots of long walks, couldn't go far in sandals as they tend to cause blisters.
