Do you like the curated ear look?

And if you do, where do you normally buy your flat back earrings from?

I have this kind of thing and like really small earrings though I'm quite bored with what I have now and looking for some ideas!

Love a curated ear! I started mine as a teenager, didn't wear most of them in my twenties but am now adding more again in my thirties.

I'm allergic to most metals except titanium so tend to buy proper piercing jewellery which is so much nicer now than it used to be! I frequently buy from this shop, the lady who runs it is lovely and has done me a custom order recently for something I'd seen elsewhere ishabodyjewellery.co.uk

Range of price points too - Tish Lyon and BVLA, but also QualiTi and some unbranded bits which are almost as nice.

LordOfTheThings · 04/08/2021 20:15

@textbook - that's a fab sight, thank you so much for posting. Most of my others are Junipurr earrings and they have some lovely ones on there.

Love it. My piercings and earrings are from Maria Tash. Yes expensive, but I only suit gold coloured jewellery and I prefer a solid metal rather than plating, so actually Maria Tash is no more expensive than anywhere else for solid gold earrings at a high carat.
I didn't get my ears pierced until later in life and so it was an investment I was happy to make to have several done at the same time with high quality jewellery.

I just had my rook pierced today and my ear is throbbing so I'm looking at nice jewellery pieces for it to cheer myself up - thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I'm 41 and I had my helix done a few months ago and I'm planning my conch piercing now for when the rook heals a little. Also got 2 lobe piercings in one and 3 in the other ear from about 20 years ago. Definitely no age limit - if you fancy it, just do it! Yes it hurts, but not for long and even the throbbing only lasts a few days.

Long live the curated ear! Grin

Scream Pretty have some lovely earrings (and ear cuffs) and are quite reasonable.

www.serenityjewellery.co.uk/ is great for titanium / nobium jewellery imcluding labrets. No where near the cost of Maria Tash, although some of the dearer brands (e.g. Industrial Strength) are far from cheap.

DaisyBD · 05/08/2021 10:54

@AleynEivlys would you mind sharing where you got your conch earring from? and is it opal? I've been dithering for literally years over a Maria Tash one that looks very similar (and I think they've stopped doing it now anyway in 11mm), but it was getting on for £500 anyway and they were going to charge me about £80 for delivery from New York, which seems outrageous when they must have deliveries from their store there all the time.

AleynEivlys · 05/08/2021 11:55

Hi @DaisyBD,

That is certainly very pricey!! Mine is 'opal', so not real, but as far as I'm concerned, if it looks right and isn't irritating my piercing then I don't care. 😁

It's a 16g 10 mm seamless clicker and was one of only two I didn't pick up on Etsy - it's from Amazon. Despite the rather dubious store name, it's actually a beautiful little hoop and I've had no problems with it at all.

I don't think they do it in 11 mm, but here is the link anyway: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B083DP9G1Y?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

If you prefer your materials to be a little more luxurious or have any allergy requirements then I have seen lots of very similar stuff on Etsy for much less than Maria Tash, and plenty in the 'in-between' sizes too. HTH.

DaisyBD · 05/08/2021 14:32

thanks! that's super helpful. I might just go for it anyway, the person who pierced my conch thought that 10mm would be ok but when I went to maria tash they said their 9.5mm would be too small. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't fit, I can always use it in another piercing.

Sorry - I don't do photos on MN.

Confusedandshaken · 05/08/2021 19:36

I only have a traditional ear lobe piercing. I would love another one or two to have this look. I'd particularly little diamond huggies but I'm scared. Which piercings hurt the least and heal the quickest?

BlackSwan · 05/08/2021 19:44

I balk at the prices for the miniscule jewellery and gem dust.

And you know the trend will swing the other way before long. Like handbag sizes.

UthredofBattenberg · 05/08/2021 21:20

Oooh, I've had curated ears for about 20 years, who knew?! Grin

AleynEivlys · 05/08/2021 22:03

@Confusedandshaken For me, rook was by far the least painful, followed by daith. Helix and conch were similarly unpleasant and tragus was the worst. They have all had their moments during healing - certain ones more than others (tragus and daith, I am looking at you), but none so far have taken any longer than 9 months at the most to stop giving me trouble.

It's totally dependent on the person though.

All piercings are going to hurt to some degree, but it's temporary and quick. I absolutely hate needles and find the build up to the piercing horrendously scary, but the euphoria afterwards is so worth it that I consider myself completely addicted. 👍

goddessofmischief · 05/08/2021 22:18

Other people have had overly pierced ears for many years. This can do one as a trend. I've been laughed at tucking my hair behind my ears, and for the piercings in my face for years. Curate all you like but don't try to make this a thing that's suddenly acceptable because it's fashionable and take the piss out of previous posters, we're critical for a reason. I can only recommend stainless steel or titanium for those wanting to branch out. Also feather pillows, you can make a little hollow with a fist so you can sleep comfortably. Take careful care of the piercings you have and/or new ones. By all means enjoy how they look but be sensible. Daith piercings as a migraine cure are a myth, that's the only piercing I've had to retire due to irritation from ear phones etc. Didn't help a jot.

Rockbird · 06/08/2021 14:29

Had forward helix done last week (also got outer conch, double helix and 3 lobes on each ear) and it hurt like a bugger when it was done but more than that, who knew that when you move your face your ear moves too? I certainly didn't but get a fresh forward helix piercing and you feel every muscle twitch! Hmm

CheekyChewinski · 06/08/2021 14:36

I think some people are missing the point here. The trend of the curated ear is a lot to do with the jewellery and the fact the piercings are pierced and the dainty jewellery is inserted straight away. I'm a huge fan of Maria Tash and certainly wouldn't have multiple piercings without the jewellery as personally I do not like the titanium barbell jewellery they use at your local tattoo studio. I wouldn't be willing to have that type of jewellery until the piercing had healed so I could then switch to gold and diamonds. So it is a relatively new concept.

Hopeisallineed · 06/08/2021 16:15

I never had titanium barbells in my ears, 30 years ago.

AleynEivlys · 06/08/2021 16:45

Probably because piercers were not commonly doing conch/tragus/rook/daith etc. piercings 30 years ago, @Hopeisallineed 😉

Squiz81 · 06/08/2021 18:20

Curated means “carefully chosen and thoughtfully organised” (merriam-webster) which is what these piercings are, so I don’t really understand the hate on the word.

I’ve not bought from this company but they pop up on my Instagram feed and they have some nice flat back earrings
zohrehv.com/collections/flat-back-earrings?page=2

ScantRegard · 06/08/2021 18:43

I think it's because curated sounds so pompous. Not just in this context, it's been going on for a decade. Restaurants have 'curated' menus, boutiques have 'curated' collections. The style section of a weekend paper puts a Christmas gift guide together and calls it 'curated'. It's been so overused as to have lost its true meaning. Actual curators must think 'oh bog off''. Grin

I do like this look though and have a few similar piercings, mostly from Etsy. I could never pay Maria Tash style earring because I think it's overpriced but it seems like people go there for an elevated piercing experience. Which is fair enough. But my local piercing studio suits me!
