I know HM has sometimes said she wishes she'd gone to school. I think that's a bit sad.
I think Anne wishes she'd gone to Gordonstoun instead of Charles!

Mathilde’s daughter, Elizabeth, has left Atlantic College now, but I’m sure the Spanish & Dutch girls will have larks there! I think Willem is an old boy of the college too.

SenecaFallsRedux · 12/08/2021 15:19

I think Princess Margaret is on record as wishing to have been better educated.

Eaumyword · 12/08/2021 16:17

Yes, I think HMQ and Margaret would have benefited from school.
Not just for the education, but I think you do a lot of learning about how to navigate relationships and gain an understanding of the inequality/reality of life in some cases.
I bet Anne would have fitted in well at Gordonstoun-jolly hockey sticks and all that!

KillingMeDeftly · 12/08/2021 16:39

Princess Alexandra was apparently the first women in the royal family to go to school rather than be taught by a governess. Though I think one of Queen Victoria's daughters, maybe Louise, went to art school?

KillingMeDeftly · 12/08/2021 16:58

Maxima meeting the Dutch Olympic team in a dress with the belt buckle the size of her head!

She's not in orange! I rather like the turquoise, though. That is a large buckle!

They were both in Brownies and Guides though.

MotherofPearl · 12/08/2021 17:44

That's a bold belt indeed. Max really loves bold accessories! The turquoise suits her.

Eaumyword · 12/08/2021 17:57

Yes, Brownies&Guides, plus HMQ learned car maintenance etc during the war. I take your point, but I also think it's really good that modern royals go to school and have the opportunity for a more rounded education and to make friends outside of their immediate family
Max looks phenomenal! I love that turquoise, the style and the belt bigger than a head!Grin

I was at KP recently. Photos aren't the best but thought you all might like them!

Thanks, @margotsdevil - those are lovely pictures! Love the gems. I like QEQM's evening dress. Whose green dress is that on the left?

RomainingCalm · 12/08/2021 21:46

Thank you for the pictures @margotsdevil, they are fabulous. I've googled and apparently there aren't any pictures of the Queen Mother in that gorgeous black evening dress.

I did find this picture of Princess Margaret in the evening gown which I thought was very lovely.

Do you know how long the exhibition is at KP for?

MotherofPearl · 12/08/2021 21:47

IIRC the green dress on the right was Princess Margaret's, based on an 18th century design.

That black evening dress of the Queen Mother's is tiny! I always think of her as rather sturdily built, that that dress was really narrow.

Eaumyword · 12/08/2021 21:53

These photos are fabulous! I totally need to take my mum before the exhibition finishes.
I love that photo of Margaret. She looks timelessly beautiful there.

margotsdevil · 13/08/2021 00:17

Glad you liked them! I think the Princess 'Margaret dress is more blue (not great colours in the photo) but I was absolutely blown away by how tiny the waist is when you see it in person! I'm not sure when the exhibition closes though, sorry!

KillingMeDeftly · 13/08/2021 07:00

All Princess M's and HMQ's dresses at KP have tiny waists. Diana's gowns look like they belonged to a a giant in comparison!

Maireas · 13/08/2021 07:07

The difference is corsets! I'm guessing Diana never wore one.

KillingMeDeftly · 13/08/2021 07:13

She was also nearly 6 foot tall while they were both very petite!

MotherofPearl · 13/08/2021 10:00

I've been down a Wallis Simpson rabbit hole, and thought you might enjoy this, if you've not seen it:

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.vogue.co.uk/gallery/wallis-simpson-style-file/amp

I suppose it's bad form to admit it, but I do think WS was so very chic, and I think my views on her amazing emerald engagement ring are well known to all on here!

KillingMeDeftly · 13/08/2021 10:12

Oh Wallis certainly had style by the bucketload @MotherofPearl and her wedding outfit was the epitome of chic.

MotherofPearl · 13/08/2021 10:22

I agree Killing, but always feel a tiny bit treasonous for saying so!

KillingMeDeftly · 13/08/2021 10:24

I think she was a flawed but interesting woman. Recent biographers seem to think that she didn't really want to marry David but felt she had no choice once he'd abdicated. It doesn't sound like they had a happy life together, or certainly she didn't.

Maireas · 13/08/2021 10:35

Wallis was a very stylish woman with some fantastic jewellery (thanks to David).
I've read a lot about her, definitely an interesting person. I agree about her emerald engagement ring!
