Frumpy or not?

Are these frumpy or ok? (They are a pewter colour, not black)

They arrived and they are all scratched so will have to go back. I'll maybe wear my white DM's with the dress then.

The top of the shoes are fab! But the soles are not very aesthetically pleasing - thick rubber wedges that expand out from the edges always look a bit orthopaedic. They always make legs and feet look shorter and stumpier than they are. I like the dress, but it requires a more delicate trainer or a proper combat style boot.

If you like this style couldn't you go for Doc Marten style or desert boot style shoes? Or something with a less clunky sole?

The soles are wrong. If they were standard flat lace up shoes they’d be fine and I’d wear them but the wedge is not good.
