Frumpy or not?

Are these frumpy or ok? (They are a pewter colour, not black)

Frumpy or not?

Well, I am not 25, nowhere near it, and certainly not a gamine size 8, but I shall be wearing the dress, whenever I feel like it, possibly with these shoes (they haven't arrived yet) but no chunky necklace. Life is too short not to. I do however have a battered leather satchel. Maybe theres hope for me yet.

I like them both and have shoes that are very similar. Over 25s are allowed to enjoy clothes too, even if no longer a size 8. If anyone has a problem with that, it's their issue not ours.

ilovecherries · 29/06/2021 08:11

I love both and I’m sure you will also look cool AF.

Oh come off it.

I'm late thirties which is old enough to know that you need to be very young/slim/stylish to pull off such ugly clothes successfully.

3Britnee · 29/06/2021 09:57

They might be fine separately, dressed up nice, but together it makes me think of Jo Brand.

I’m late 60s which is old enough to know you wear what you like and not give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks.

Jo Brand actually dresses very well, and has a sense of style that is her own. Far better than anything identikit and bland. It's not my style (o don't have her body shape), but it is stylish.
pippistrelle · 29/06/2021 11:03

When I am supreme dictator, I am going to ban the word 'frumpy'. And there will be serious penalties for people who use it to denigrate the clothing choices of others or of themselves.

That said, I think that those items on me would be... not to my taste. But I love a considered outfit, and I think you can tell when someone has thought about their clothes rather than just slung on the first thing that came to hand. I think it would be clear that those dress and shoes together were a considered outfit and, for that, I would salute you.

Well OP obviously doesn't agree with you.

Maybe I will by the time I get to 60 odd. My mum is sixty five and wears the most perplexing combinations Grin

ferretface · 29/06/2021 11:10

They're cool. I use Thread for wardrobe inspiration and have had them suggested as part of an outfit, i really like them.

Orf1abc · 29/06/2021 11:21

Love the shoes, but they need to be dressed with a more slender outfit. Dress plus shoes may end up rather blobby.

Slothkin · 29/06/2021 12:53

@Pinkcadillac you gave me a giggle because I had a moment of bafflement as to how you could only like one shoe…

HowNowUnholyCow · 29/06/2021 17:12

I can assure you that even on an old non gamine like me the dress is very flattering.. And thank fuck the world is not reserved for the young, slim, stylish women.. Because they everyone will be none of those things one day... But they can still wear whatever the hell they like.

Hallelujah.

I hope you love the shoes and I think they'll look good with the dress. Enjoy them!

It seems OP does agree with me.

I bet your mum looks awesome but you’re too blinkered to appreciate it.

ZednotZee · 30/06/2021 00:40

It seems OP does agree with me.

I wouldn't have thought you'd be canvassing opinions on the s&b board if you didn't GAF what people thought.

VroomVrooom · 30/06/2021 00:52

They would look fantastic on a stylish person, and not great at all on a not-stylish person.

People can - and should - wear what they want. But not everyone can carry everything off (I am sadly in this latter group; most of us post-40 are). And if you’re asking, you obviously care about this sort of thing.

Kanaloa · 30/06/2021 01:22

I think they could easily look frumpy. For me, I know I have the tendency to look frumpy easily so I try to avoid clothes that lean that way. But if you don’t care then it doesn’t really matter - there’s nothing less frumpy than someone who is totally confident in what they’re wearing.

HowNowUnholyCow · 30/06/2021 07:56

I do like to canvas opinions, but I also reserve the right not to listen to them Grin

I have several similar pairs of this sort of shoe and so I can confirm they are cool. I wear them with ankle grazer trousers

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/06/2021 16:21

The more the word 'frumpy' is said, the less it actually means anything. I hate it.

I wear mine with ankle grazer trousers and fishnet pop socks a lot. Or with black tights and a short skirt (although no longer as short as I used to!).

I think they'd look great with opaques and a fitted over the jumper dress in A/W too, but I still haven't managed to track any nice ones down.

over the knee jumper dress
Dogoodfeelgood · 30/06/2021 16:24

I think they’d be cooler if they were a platform base rather than a wedge. Love the dress too.

Blossomtoes · 30/06/2021 16:26

Fishnet popsocks you say. Bloody brilliant idea. Off I go to look for some right now. Thank you @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie.
