Are my trainers trendy?

I haven't worn trainers since way before they became fashionable. I'm late 30's but a bit of a style luddite.

Today I dug out a pair of very very old Nikes to go on a walk in. I was shocked at how comfortable they are but would like to know where they score on the awful to cool range.

Not to say this is the only important thing and I will wear them anyway but I have honestly no idea and would value feedback from those in the know 🙏

Even Kendal Jenner is wearing them Grin

No they aren’t sorry, if you want some similar to that sort of shape, super comfy and trendy try Ozweegos. No idea why people feel the need to be patronising over trainers x

babbaloushka · 27/06/2021 19:20

@mizu

Yep, my DDs -16 and 17 - would agree re shorts and jumper combo. Paired with trainers or Crocs with socks Grin

Wide leg trousers / jeans with little tops and checked shirts.

DD was eyeing up my Birkenstocks but said they look too prison like HmmGrinGrin

They are basically wearing what I wore in the 90s.

At 48, I love Teva sandals - currently looking at the leopard print ones but they are £80 Shock- with a TOAST dress or wide leg jeans.

It is a little hard to follow their fashion advice on what's cool or trendy when crocs come up Grin. Sainsbury's do some really nice little leopard beach sliders for £6, I actually got a teenage compliment that wasn't backhanded with ageism!
riotlady · 27/06/2021 19:35

They look a bit like what my mum wore to do aerobics videos in the 90s, which I’m pretty sure is the height of fashion for teens right now. Problem is that all these trends being revived will look very cutting edge on a 19 year old but would make me look like budget Angela Lansbury

belimoo · 27/06/2021 19:53

@babbaloushka

Showed DD17 and she said they are in, Dad trainers are a fashion thing apparently.
Well this was promising until a later poster explained that it's cool if you're a teenager and Angela Lansbury otherwise 🤣

I don't think I pull off the teenage look so maybe I just just sell them on eBay and how for a decent price

I'd put them on the avant-garde scale.

Yaykyay · 27/06/2021 19:59

To be honest op... I feel like they are the kind of thing a 20 year old could wear with those plated trousers I would have rejected in the 90s and look tendy. But in anyone okder they look frumpy. I think a lot of stuff like this is in fashion right now. It's like they actively look for ugly stuff. I'm only in my 30s I sound so ancient! 😂

Having said that if they're comfortable I don't think you should give a shit if they are trendy.

Yaykyay · 27/06/2021 19:59

Have a look at norm core as an example!

Anoisagusaris · 27/06/2021 20:03

Would you not just keep them for walking or wearing with jeans? A lot of the white trainers that are worn with dresses are not very comfortable.

By the way, what do you wear for walking normally?

Duchess379 · 27/06/2021 20:06

I'm laughing my head off - I'm in my mid 40s & live in trainers! Adidas Superstars are the way forward 😆

I agree that it seems like they're actively looking for ugly stuff! That was my impression, which was why I'd vaguely hoped my ancient trainers might fit the bill Grin

I'm not in the coolness realm of a dress with trainers yet so this was always meant for jeans and walking etc but I wanted to know whether I was committing social suicide even for that purpose (and secretly hoping I'd be labelled a fashion icon with my retro shoes)

I live in a city centre so generally don't need 'walking' shoes. I'd usually wear loafers in the day, heels in the evening and (gasp) heeled ankle boots in colder weather.

I know I'm behind the times and this is my first attempt to figure out how to get better.

It's not what she looks like, it's in insouciant pairing of the Dad trainers and falling apart jeans with a cashmere jumper and expensive coat that make it look good. Designer plus rags = cool just like designer + junk shop = cool in interiors.

PurpleyBlue · 27/06/2021 20:29

Someone on ebay will love them! They are retro.

Watchingthetelly · 27/06/2021 20:34

I say no. They are close to a trendy trainer but the devil is in the detail and those details say middle aged gym bag to me.

OP I think you should wear what pleases you, if that's not trends then don't do trends. I really enjoy trends and changing fashion so I follow it, but that's because I get a kick out of it (while running the risk of looking like Eddie from Ab Fab Grin)

Vicliz24 · 27/06/2021 20:37

I think they're fine . I wear any old trainers with everything and never care . I find Adidas Superstars really uncomfortable and converse too flat so apart from my actual running trainers I wear whatever I like be it with dresses or whatever. Confidence is the biggest key to being stylish.

babbaloushka · 27/06/2021 20:38

Depop over Ebay! You'll hit the teenage market and they'll get snapped up for plenty!

SallyCinnabon · 27/06/2021 20:38

@icedancerlenny

0% 🤣
I dunno, the 90s trainer look is really in! Have you seen some of the clumpy trainers around?

OP I think you’re a plastic bubble in the sole away from being trendy 😂

Grin Thank you. They don't please me but if I'd had some resounding positive feedback here then I would have worked at them pleasing me, as sad as that sounds.

I don't pull off cool trendy teenager in dad trainers so I need to get rid and find something else. I honestly have no idea what does please me though in the latest fashions. I would love to get into them but to me, everything looks clumsy and horrid.

I'm sure I'll come round to it all in 2 years time once everyone is moving on to something else though Smile

And thanks for the depop/eBay recommendations! I'll have a look now once I've googled dpop and figured out what you mean

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/06/2021 20:45

They're fine for exercise, I have similar, but they are not trendy, no. You need some Stan Smiths or Air & Grace for that although there are a gazillion cheaper alternatives out there! Have a look on ASOS and also Next is good for decent trendy trainers on a budget.

SallyCinnabon · 27/06/2021 20:45

I do love all the PPs on here saying they’re not trendy but the 16 and 17 children of said PPs saying they are. Guess we’re not as trendy as we think 🤣😉

(I realise trendy is subjective depending on age but trends are generally young people led)

belimoo · 27/06/2021 20:46

Also @Watchingthetelly do you ever struggle to embrace new trends? Any tips for how to convert and enjoy new styles rather than recoiling from them?

You don't have to tell me but I'd be interested to know how old you are. I think I was more fashionable in my twenties but now I seem to judge new styles like my granny Blush
