Are my trainers trendy?

I haven't worn trainers since way before they became fashionable. I'm late 30's but a bit of a style luddite.

Today I dug out a pair of very very old Nikes to go on a walk in. I was shocked at how comfortable they are but would like to know where they score on the awful to cool range.

Not to say this is the only important thing and I will wear them anyway but I have honestly no idea and would value feedback from those in the know 🙏

@TheFormidableMrsC

They're fine for exercise, I have similar, but they are not trendy, no. You need some Stan Smiths or Air & Grace for that although there are a gazillion cheaper alternatives out there! Have a look on ASOS and also Next is good for decent trendy trainers on a budget.
Thank you for the tips Smile

@belimoo

And thanks for the depop/eBay recommendations! I'll have a look now once I've googled dpop and figured out what you mean
Grin I only know about Depop as my DDs love it and buy all sorts of crap stuff on there, second hand retro appears to be very cool. I could have saved them a fortune if I'd just kept hold of my old stuff from the 80s/90s.

@SallyCinnabon

I do love all the PPs on here saying they’re not trendy but the 16 and 17 children of said PPs saying they are. Guess we’re not as trendy as we think 🤣😉

(I realise trendy is subjective depending on age but trends are generally young people led)

Haha I wondered about that too. Ultimately though I'm not looking to copy a trendy 16 year old so I appreciate the negative feedback from 30 something year olds.

Think I'll head back to my loafers and give up on fashion!

Just wear them if they are comfy, everyone needs a pair of comfy old trainers for shoving on now and again, no point selling them, they are clearly old second hand shoes, so doubtful will fetch much,

As for the trendy ones I wasn’t meaning th super ga specifically, more that shape, flat soled, white, are the ones to wear with dresses etc,😃

belimoo · 27/06/2021 20:53

Haha @SallyCinnabon I've only just seen your suggestion. Maybe I should just look at bubble/straw options...

@belimoo I'm in my 30s. There's always such a range of trends so that I find I can pick ones I like and which will suit me and my lifestyle. I mix them with more classic pieces. There are definitely trends that I don't like and avoid!

I tend to be careful with silhouette of things. E.g. ditch skinny jeans, avoid long tops. I also buy more trendy things I really enjoy and wear them a lot - then I'm not wasting them when they go out of fashion without having got the wear from them.

Thanks for the reply. My problem at the moment is that skinny jeans have become such a staple that I can't even imagine how to stop wearing them. I know I will eventually but it will likely be long after everyone else... I'm just intrigued as to how people change their staples so quickly (or don't have staples in the first place)

I really appreciate all of the replies on this thread and sorry to anyone I haven't replied to directly. I have taken them all on board!

Superga are not even remotely trendy. Actually the ones you’re wearing look good depending on how you style them.

Wegobshite · 27/06/2021 21:29

I love trainers . I live in mine and really resent wearing heels on the occasions that I need to wear them 😂
when I die I’m taking all my trainers with me in my coffin .
I have Ozweegos in white purple and black- they are so comfortable

Addis’s superstar in white very comfortable

Addis’s nizza leather trainers in white and in black ( the canvas are crap and gave me blisters but the leather ones are fine )
Nike air 90s in white - heavy and clumpy but ok
Puma Cali in white - beautiful with a floaty dress
And a few pairs of ASICS for dog walking and crap 😂

Idratherdrinkcoffee · 27/06/2021 21:32

The style that Bluntness100 posted (which weren't the classic canvas superga) is what I would consider current/trendy for grown up women. I'm not a big fan although I love trainers.

I'm not young/cool but I would have thought the ones you are wearing look fine.

I quite like Saucony Jazz and have seen a lot of them around if you want something popular (definitely not worn by teenagers!)

I would wear them OP!

I also still love my skinny jeans …. Won’t be moving on from them for a good while yet!

Just roll the bottom of your skinnies up a bit to make them more up to date

PickAChew · 27/06/2021 23:58

If you use the word trendy, then they're not! I was surprised you're younger than me, tbh.

Blueskytoday06 · 28/06/2021 07:28

I like them and would consider them trendy

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 28/06/2021 07:38

Running shoes are fine but not unless you are super tendu can you pull off the runners with an outfit look .. that of course is for you to decide ...

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 28/06/2021 07:38

It's all about Nike Air Force with the teens round here...

newnortherner111 · 28/06/2021 08:14

They are comfortable. Why should care about anything else?

Miseryisabutterfly · 28/06/2021 09:20

I really like them. I’m 37.

riromay · 28/06/2021 09:31

They are absolutely trendy, look at Balenciaga Triple S. And yes, better even if worn with floaty dresses or wide leg jeans.

I'm a tiny bit amused at posters who suggested the white simple trainers as being in , they're certainly popular but not the most fashionable !

belimoo · 28/06/2021 10:08

Thank you for the positive replies (and the not so positive replies) everyone!

Been trying to finish this post for ages now OP but keep getting interrupted so I expect pp's will have already suggested some if not all of the following but hopefully something might be of use to you! 😄
I have never understood why some people feel compelled to wear something just because it's a current trend yet they don't actually like it or it does nothing for them.
Also, unless you are wealthy enough to purchase said trends from a sustainable label you'll just be adding to the fast fashion travesty and there's nothing good about that.
If it's a case of wanting to look more put together, or youthful or to develop your own style then that's a different thing all together. There are some gorgeous people on the style and beauty threads who offer great advice and you could definitely start there.
The most important thing in my opinion is to buy and wear clothes that you love, that make you happy. Buy the best quality that you can afford and never underestimate the power of accessories to change the feel of an outfit. Better to have a capsule wardrobe of a few really good versatile pieces that you can dress up and down with jewellery and different shoes than a closet full of cheap crap that was on-trend (ick ick ick) for 5 minutes 6 months ago!
If you don't yet know what you like Pinterest is a literal mine of information. You need to understand your body shape and colouring and think about what your lifestyle and day to day activities needs. Also, are there people irl or characters from films and books whose style you admire?
Sounds like a really exciting and lovely project to invest some time (and £'s) in OP!
As for the trainer's, they are similar to some I had in the 90's and one rule I actually do believe in is that if you're old enough to have worn it the first time round you could easily give it a miss this time!😁
I definitely think some young 'un will bite your hand off on eBay or dpop for your "vintage 90's dad trainers" and you can put the proceeds towards your new look! Smile

CupOfTPlease · 28/06/2021 10:54

For walking they're fine. You don't need trendy trainers for a walk.

However, I remember these being in trend not sure if they still are but they are fucking awful.

Are my trainers trendy?
belimoo · 28/06/2021 11:09

Thank you @Wishingwell75 that was a great post and I agree with everything you said.

I had already worn the trainers so, despite what my post suggests, I wasn't going to be completely swayed by the feedback here. I was just interested to know people's views as I have no clue when it comes to trainers.

I will still wear them for walking etc as they're really comfortable but have decided I definitely can't pull of the ugly dad trainer look and nor do I want to!

I am struggling to get into any of the latest styles and I think you're right that I should just ignore fast fashion and stick to what I like. I'm not great at accessorising though. Maybe that should be my next post...
