Is this a suitable outfit for summer wedding?

I am going to a wedding in a few weeks and cannot find a dress I like so I'm leaning towards a top/skirt combo. I know black isnt really the done thing for a wedding but can I get away with it as the skirt breaks it up a bit?
Would appreciate any input!
Also I'm not tall just average, top is just an example of the bardot style I like Smile

Love that dress

Blabbyblab · 25/06/2021 21:06

@AdriannaP I actually do like DVF!

I think you have nailed it @Graphista, I try hard to look good in dressed down styles as that is all I wear, but I dont think I actually own anything high end dress wise. Plus I find it hard to accessorise pieces, I never used to, I used to be pretty fashion forward many moons ago Grin

I am going to have a good look at all of the dresses linked above tonight. Thankyou all, I so appreciate it!

I love that never fully dressed one but I’m not sure it’s for a formal wedding?
It is so so pretty though and you could wear it again and again. Possibly even with mucky little children !

Blabbyblab · 25/06/2021 21:16

I am olive skinned with brown curly hair @Graphista, I think the navy colour is a good option for me, not too far away from black but I will team it with bright colours as @Atalune suggested.

Now I just need to find shoes and a bag Grin

I like your original choice, I think it would look fabulous with the right accessories. You can look stunning in that and not look like you are trying to outdo anyone else! The Bardot neckline would look great with a fascinator or hat that is slightly bigger than usual (slightly smaller than width of the neckline) which could be a statement and would balance out the proportions of the outfit. Stunning shoes, bag and a pair of earrings and you are sorted.

FourTurnings · 25/06/2021 21:43

Too informal unless it’s a very casual wedding.

Graphista · 25/06/2021 21:59

It's a phase many of us go through when busy with little ones. As they get older (and especially when they become gobby trendy teens!) you find your way back somewhat

Hopefully you're on track to find something that you feel good in

Atalune · 25/06/2021 22:18

Come back and tell us what you end up going for. I bet you’ll look gorgeous in whatever you end up in Smile

Divebar2021 · 26/06/2021 07:49

These rules that have evolved around weddings are truly ridiculous… why do we expect someone to wear a flowery dress if they normally wear black. And what’s wrong with wearing black anyway ? The issue is they don’t want a sea of black because it’s associated with funerals (apart from it wouldn’t be like that because everyone else will be in a flowery dress.) And wraps? I mean seriously. You can wear trousers OP…. A pink or otherwise coloured trouser suit for example. I would just look at things that are your taste and not someone else’s. I wouldn’t worry about it being classic particularly unless you’re trying to look like the Duchess of Cambridge. If you want a skirt / top go for it. It’s a happy occasion and everyone really will be focused on the couple.

Blabbyblab · 29/06/2021 11:45

Just wanted to check back in to show the dress I ended up ordering, it's completely different to anything I would ordinarily wear but I like the shape and it is lined and boned so hopefully will look dressy enough with accessories. I have yet to try it on, so will report back when it arrives, might look hideous Grin

I had a similar outfit as your first one for a (pretty casual) wedding 18 months ago, but the skirt was more of a mid-length tutu.
I also had a big black feather in my hair and quite dramatic earrings.

Atalune · 29/06/2021 14:22

It is really not my taste but there is no accounting for taste! The floral milkmaid look is really not my thing, but I am a little older (41) than you so I’d feel quite out of place in that dress.

Enjoy the wedding. SmileFlowers

AdriannaP · 29/06/2021 22:20

Wow the top is quite revealing for a wedding.

WHERE TO WEAR:
Stroll the local markets with basket in hand, Italian city sightseeing, Picnics by the river, Garden parties, Afternoon tea dates.”

PinkTonic · 30/06/2021 08:52

Gosh that’s rather revealing. I don’t get why the concern about a floral placement dress with a white background but both of your choices show a lot of bare shoulders or chest which is far from appropriate for a formal wedding. And the best man’s wife. Can you really not find a suitable dress and a nice hat?

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 30/06/2021 09:33

Wedding guest threads are unintentionally very entertaining I find!
So many bizzare 'rules' that lead to very strange choices in the end.
I really loved the navy dress linked on the 1st page & there were a couple of other nice, more understated dresses also linked.

I haven't been to a wedding in several years now & I have no clue what I'd wear if I happened to be invited to one. But I know with certainty it would not be a floral dress or a wrap.

UK weddings seem to have a lot of rules

2me2u2u2me · 30/06/2021 11:00

It's a really pretty dress but I don't think it's appropriate for a wedding, the top half is too open and low and the thigh high split isn't what I'd like to see. Great with a pair of sandals or converse but not formal enough for a wedding IMO

Time2b33 · 30/06/2021 11:12

I liked your first outfit personally!

LalalalalalaLand123 · 30/06/2021 14:16

Hmmm I'm not a fan of your final choice, I'm afraid OP. I feel it's too casual and too revealing for a wedding, and as partner of the best man.
I prefer something like Phase Eight occassion dresses, or Shein has a number of nice ones for great prices. Or something like this:

Enjoy the wedding OP, whatever you wear!

Annalou30 · 30/06/2021 14:19

I’ve been looking at this dress for a wedding, but can’t for life if me figure what underwear I would wear with it!??

Annalou30 · 30/06/2021 14:33

I liked your first idea personally. With a black/beige fascinator and nice accessories. Finding many of the suggestions very old fashioned and a bit frumpy personally, and your final dress is also a no from me. I like the Reiss dress and they have a sale on at the moment on some others:

Viviennemary · 30/06/2021 14:35

Not black to a wedding. I like the skirt but not for a wedding.

I love this, not a fan of the milk maid dress sorry.

Bluntness100 · 30/06/2021 14:39

That’s certainly quite revealing for a wedding, I’m guessing you want to nail the sexy vibe? 😂
