I'm 5'7" why do I have to buy "short" trousers?

Admittedly I rarely wear heels so they need to fit with flats, but looking about me, few women wear heels on a daily basis now.

All regular trousers are far too long. I've just ordered a pair of short linen trousers from Monsoon and they fit beautifully, the length just touches the ground without shoes. The first pair from any shop I've kept in years. I'd pretty much given up wearing trousers because they're always miles too long.

I don't know why I hadn't thought to try petite before, except that I'm not 5"3"

Yep. You must have proportionately short legs. I have the opposite problem and find even "tall" ranges are often too short.

I'm another one - I'm 5ft6 and have to buy petite trousers. I have a really long body and very short legs. A colleague is exactly the same height as me but my inside leg is 27.5 inches and hers is 32....

If they're cut like ankle grazers then they're up around my calves in a really stupid, uncomfortable place.

The opposite for me! I'm only 5'3" but have at times bought long length as I want the trousers full length rather than ending 2" above the ankle as in a lot of current styles .

Because you can take trousers up but you can’t lengthen them….

Its strange isn't it, I must be proportionally longer in the leg whilst your proportionally longer in the torso

I'm 5'4" but I have a friend who is 5'7" and I'm taller when we sit down. I'm also the same height as DH sitting down which helps with car mirrors as they don't need moving.

However, Asda and Next short length trousers are on the long side for me.

Short is just the leg length, the overall fit is not significantly smaller.

Petite means all the proportions are smaller.

Not many shops do true petite ranges anymore, which is frustrating for those of us who are petite as opposed to just having short legs.

I was talking about this just the other day with a couple of friends. I am taller than them, but they are both the same height exactly. Their legs are also the same length, but their knees are three inches different in height! So one of them has long thighs and short calves, and the other short thighs and long calves. They both look normal though, so there is a big range. I'm sure the same applies to leg length as a whole. Just because you're taller than average doesn't mean the length isn't all in your torso!

I need a swimming costume in extra long not a thing and trousers in very short. I have ittle fat stumpy legs. One of life's sadnesses.

When I sit down I am the height of a child - booster seats are often mentioned - and I buy long length trousers.

Having a long torso can look really elegant - think Keira Knightly, I think she is tall but short legged too. I look like a person a child has drawn - circular body and legs twice the length.

In Next, I once bought long trousers and a matching petite jacket at the same time. They must have thought I was shopping for a scarecrow.

I think trousers are getting longer. I used to have to wear long and even then they weren't guaranteed to be long enough. I now need a medium most places. I'm 5'7" and am basically boobs on top of legs.

I'm the same, short legs long body. Can be a problem buying swimsuits that fit my torso and i look taller sitting down than standing up! Takes ages for my bump to show when pregnant though, more room!

You can easily shorten trousers yourself (or pay someone to do them if you can't). Far better than them being too short!

I'm 5' 2" and have to buy regular, short are too short! My mum's 5' 7" and wears long though so I suspect being long of leg is genetic.

I will never look beautifully elegant though as I only have a short gap between rib cage and hips. I got very annoyed at a gym "health check" where they insisted my waist was defined by where my navel was. My navel is below the top of my hip bones so my waist to hip ratio looked terrible!
