I'm 5'7" why do I have to buy "short" trousers?

Admittedly I rarely wear heels so they need to fit with flats, but looking about me, few women wear heels on a daily basis now.

All regular trousers are far too long. I've just ordered a pair of short linen trousers from Monsoon and they fit beautifully, the length just touches the ground without shoes. The first pair from any shop I've kept in years. I'd pretty much given up wearing trousers because they're always miles too long.

I don't know why I hadn't thought to try petite before, except that I'm not 5"3" Grin

@tabulahrasa

I’m 5 ft 7 1/2 and I have to buy long trousers...

I have 33” inside legs though.

Yes same here. No torso.

The height isn’t the key thing, OP.

RickiTarr · 08/06/2021 10:36

@Hughbert

I need a swimming costume in extra long not a thing and trousers in very short. I have ittle fat stumpy legs. One of life's sadnesses.
Boden does its swimming costumes is “regular” and “long” body lengths and have loads in the sale ATM.
chesterelly · 08/06/2021 10:55

I'm 5'6" and if I buy short fit trousers the length is spot on but there isn't enough "rise". I think that's the right term, anyway I feel like my bum's eating my trousers. I'm resigned to taking up hems.

stuckinarutatwork · 08/06/2021 10:56

I'm 5'6" and have the same problem (I don't wear heels either). Standard leg length trousers are far too long.
Petite ranges are usually no good as the distance from crotch to waist is usually too short giving me either an uncomfortable wedgie or a builder's bum Blush

ALittleTimeToGo · 08/06/2021 11:06

I’m 5’7” and have to buy long-length tops and regular length trousers are long on me. I have short chunky thighs and calves, which I hate, but a longish narrow back and slim waist, so can look very different depending on how I dress. The top and bottom halves of my body really don’t go together!

GiveTheGirlAGun · 08/06/2021 11:19

5"3 with 31 inside leg, so I get a 32. I don't think I have long legs, but I've never shopped petite.

PolkadotFlamingos · 08/06/2021 12:13

@JassyRadlett

Because you can take trousers up but you can’t lengthen them….
This!! So much more of a problem having long legs than short ones.
WeatherwaxOn · 08/06/2021 12:55

Opposite to many of you.
I'm short (5') and almost all trousers are too long for me. If I shop for petites the tailoring assumption is that a petite person is slim - I'm not.
I bought a pair of casual trousers a few days ago. They're actually ok in the leg length, surprisingly, but there is a huge distance between crotch and waist.
Wondering if they can be taken up or whether I just need to keep rolling the waist up (not a good look when that's the chunkiest area).

bunnybutts · 08/06/2021 12:58

I'm 5'9" and have terrible difficulty finding long enough trousers. I have long legs!!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 08/06/2021 13:03

5'9" with a long body. Standard length trousers are fine for me. Tops can be a challenge; one piece swimsuits often are an instrument of torture.

Borgonzola · 08/06/2021 13:20

This is likely not helpful at all, but my DP is 5ft 11 and buys a 32 waist... and 30in leg. And he's slim. His legs are shorter than his waist circumference Grin

ballroompink · 08/06/2021 13:45

Same! Am 5'7 too. I have disproportionately short legs. My legs look in proportion when I wear three inch heels. I often go for 'short' length, sometimes 'regular'. I have a long body though, and find the issue of waistbands not hitting at the right point on my torso is a problem.

MilduraS · 08/06/2021 13:48

I'm 5ft2 and often have the problem of petite trousers being too long. Some shops do 27" which is fine but others say 29" is petite. I'm not a fan of heels as my workplace and friends are quite casual so I feel overdressed.

Bathshebahardy · 08/06/2021 13:56

I'm only 5'3" but sometimes need long length trousers. I do wear petite dresses when I can find them. I am short waisted with long legs for my height.

PolkadotFlamingos · 08/06/2021 14:04

And as a PP said, if they're too long they can be taken up! As a default surely they should be long because otherwise what are people with long legs meant to do, sew random material onto the bottom? 😂
Bluedelphinium · 08/06/2021 14:17

5'6" and short legs here too! I do quite a bit of trouser shortening myself

BrownEyedGirl80 · 08/06/2021 14:18

I'm 5ft 10 but wear "regular" leg trousers usually.Ive got a long torso.

FunnyWonder · 08/06/2021 15:33

I'm 5ft 7in and usually a regular length is ok, but sometimes I need long. I have never bought short/petite.

MindBodyChocolate · 08/06/2021 15:59

Oh @Hughbert I’m exactly the same. It is a small sadness 🤣

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/06/2021 22:08

DD also 5'7" but usually needs long. She is a size 6 or 8.

Moltenpink · 08/06/2021 22:15

I’m 6ft and often find that trousers in the long ranges are too long even for me. Who the hell are they for then?

ThisMarleyIsNotALabrador · 08/06/2021 22:29

I’m 5’7”. Regular length trousers/jeans/leggings from M&S fit just fine. Anywhere else I need to buy long length

SciFiScream · 08/06/2021 22:31

I'm 5'7 and I buy regular length. I have a really long body and long arms though. In fact my arms are 2" longer than average of someone my height. My arms are generally longer than a woman 6' and taller!

Notashandyta · 08/06/2021 22:43

Why oh why can't they make standard lengths for women like they do for men? Eg extra short, short, standard, long, extra long? Same length in every shop so we can select the right one for us?
Said as a 5.10" lady with 33 inch legs...
Next are as good as I've found for having a range of clothes available for different leg lengths

Notashandyta · 08/06/2021 22:43

Thanks for the boden tip btw, off to check out the longer length swimsuits in a min Smile
