I want to treat myself and buy a really nice gemstone, cocktail ring.

I don't want to get married again so I will never have an engagement ring again. But I really like gemstone rings and I want to buy a nice one to enjoy and then to give to my daughter one day. I really like morganite or sapphire but I am open to all gemstones.

Any ideas? Do any of you wear that kind of thing?

@QueenOfCakeandCoffee That is absolutely incredible - are you happy with it ?

QueenOfCakeandCoffee · 04/06/2021 18:57

Very! Two of the stones were mine and the other three she sourced, it does get fluff caught on the prongs and needs cleaning more than my other rings.
I would love one (more more) of her necklaces as well but I doubt I will be able to afford more.
I’ve started buy antique rings on eBay and have done very well so far

mommybunny · 04/06/2021 19:03

@WellTidy If you’re really into finding a ring you can make a project out of remodelling I would very much encourage you to try online auctions. Start small and cheap, maybe not even rings but something else collectible that captures your fancy. Use them to get comfortable with the bidding process.

If you’re frightened of being carried away by active, dynamic bidding into spending more than you can really afford (a perfectly reasonable fear - we’ve all seen films of art auctions where paintings go for zillions because someone scratched his nose) then you can always set a fixed maximum bid for an item you really want in advance of the auction with the house. Again this would need to be done a day or two in advance.

You do run a slight risk that you basically set the floor on the price for the item, but I have actually gotten some really nice things using this approach, some of which have actually worked out less than my maximum bid. Unless there is huge demand for an item the house doesn’t look at your bid and start from there - they start at a realistic point at the low end of the estimate and open it to the room and online/phone bidders, using your bid as a means to increase the room/online/phone bids. For example, say you submitted a max bid of £150 on an item with a £100-200 estimate. The auctioneer would probably open at around £100 and see if the room increased it to £120. If that happened the auctioneer would raise the price to £140, because they know you’ll pay at least £150. If no one raised after the £140 the item is yours for £140. If someone did raise then you’re out. Does that make sense?

I buy through www.easyliveauction.com/ fairly regularly.

belhaven · 04/06/2021 19:04

My absolute fave is Kirstie Allsopp's aquamarine knuckle duster. I'd LOVE to find one like this.

I love rose quartz & amethyst too.

One day I will treat myself!

Dogsandbabies · 04/06/2021 19:06

So many lovely rings!!

I took the plunge and ordered a morganite ring from Blue Nile. It is arriving tomorrow and I am so excited to try it on.

Oh and another thing - it costs nothing to bid, if you don’t succeed and the item goes for more than your maximum bid. If you are successful and you get the item you will have to pay a commission on the hammer price - usually somewhere between 15-20% if I recall correctly and I think VAT on the commission (but if the item is an antique usually not on the hammer price) - but there are otherwise no hidden costs to auction buying.

PegasusReturns · 04/06/2021 19:08

And should add I’ve got some good deals, although not yet managed to get a ring through them.

I tend to buy at mid range prices. My latest purchases were valued at 250-300% more and in fact my last necklace the jeweller that valued it offered to buy it for 60% more than I paid. So definitely bargains to be had.

PhantomErik · 04/06/2021 19:24

Beebumble2 that's lovely!

RandomCatGenerator · 04/06/2021 19:34

Oh wow @Dogsandbabies that looks gorgeous - beautiful setting of stones around it.

@RedPandaFluff that is an amazing ring!

Anonmousse · 04/06/2021 20:12

Glad you found something you liked, it looks fab @Dogsandbabies
I am a jeweller and mainly make things using diamonds or sapphires/precious stones, but with semi precious stones, as long as you're not planning to wear every day you can get a lot more bling for your money. Smile
Aquamarine, Amythest, quartz etc is not as hard wearing as diamond.
I recently sold a 10ct citrine ring and a 5.14ct aqua ring for under £400 each . (Aquamarine varies hugely though- this was a pale blue colour - the deeper blue is generally more expensive)

Am loving seeing all these beautiful rings. I have asked DH for a ring for my 40th and after seeing all the beautiful choices available I am inspired

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 04/06/2021 21:18

Some lovely rings here. When your ring arrives OP, please post a picture.

If anyone wants to play with ideas cheaply, check out Qudo. You buy the band and ring toppers separately, so you can try out lots of different looks. The band is about £20 and the toppers between £20-£40. I have a few and they are great for when you want something blingy but don't want to wear something expensive, like on holiday (remember those?)

This is my newest cocktail ring purchase. It's a 30+ carat citrine set in gold. I bought it via an auction on Easylive auctions for a bargain £ and then paid to have it resized. I love massive gems like this!
