I want to treat myself and buy a really nice gemstone, cocktail ring.

I don't want to get married again so I will never have an engagement ring again. But I really like gemstone rings and I want to buy a nice one to enjoy and then to give to my daughter one day. I really like morganite or sapphire but I am open to all gemstones.

Any ideas? Do any of you wear that kind of thing?

Hermione, I think it's just Swarovski crystal, so not an expensive stone, but it's a lovely light pink irl.

Strokethefurrywall · 04/06/2021 14:57

These are my current favorites.

The blue topaz is from Tacori, the yellow is a canary crystal from Judith Ripka I think.

A good place to get decent rockage for not a lot of money is antique auction houses. I have a stonking emerald and a gorgeous aquamarine (separate rings) my DH bought for me over the years. Precious stones still won’t be cheap but will cost less than a jeweller.

Look at these

You could also look at getting a cheapish ring just for the stone to have it reset in something nicer.

I saw a lovely cocktail ring on another Mumsnet thread - looked like a Piaget copy, bought from Etsy

Corrag · 04/06/2021 15:06

I've a selection, my dear mum used to buy them for me regularly.

@mommybunny I love that amethyst one on the auction site. Absolutely love it.

You can see that the fashion has changed since they were made - my jewellery is all white gold or platinum set, and most of what you see on auction sites (at this kind of price/value) is yellow gold.

Any idea what it would cost to have the amethyst and diamonds put onto a white gold band please? Clearly getting carried away!!

mommybunny · 04/06/2021 15:49

@WellTidy

Ooh, I can’t say I really know. We bought a diamond about 16 years ago in an auction and my DH brought it to a friend to have it reset into a platinum 6 prong Tiffany engagement ring style setting, and if I remember correctly I think it cost around £750. But again, that was for a good sized diamond and a platinum setting, so white gold might not cost as much?

Hoping others have some more know how!

Wanttocry · 04/06/2021 15:51

@Strokethefurrywall that yellow one is gorgeous. (As is the topaz, but I love the yellow one!)

I just found this blog post on remodelling jewellery that might be of interest:

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/06/2021 15:56

Placemarking because this is an excellent thread. I have one my great aunt left me, no idea what the stone is but you’ve prompted me to save up and get it resized. She had some stunning pieces.

Strokethefurrywall · 04/06/2021 16:14

Thanks @Wanttocry - my bosses (at the time) bought it for me Christmas about 10 years ago.

Pretty sure you can still get them online (I’m not sure if Judith Ripka is sold in the UK)

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/06/2021 16:19

I have a large sapphire engagement ring - deco style - but really wanted an emerald but was told it was too soft for every day use. I love my engagement ring but have become utterly obsessed with Ruth Tomlinson jewellery and have promised myself I will get one made for my 50th

WellTidy · 04/06/2021 16:42

Thanks for the link @mommybunny. I am seriously tempted by that amethyst with tiny diamonds, and then having it put onto a white gold band …

mommybunny · 04/06/2021 16:52

Good luck @WellTidy, please let me know if you do it!

RedPandaFluff · 04/06/2021 16:56

I love this thread! I treated myself to a cocktail ring for my 40th - I didn't really know exactly what I wanted, and looked at loads, ultimately falling in love with this Tiffany onyx and pearls ring.

It's absolutely not what I thought I'd end up with, though! I started out looking at emeralds and rubies.

I'm also now horrified by how old and ugly my hands are in photos Confused

WellTidy · 04/06/2021 16:59

Wow @RedPandaFluff that is really unusual. It’s lovely to have something that hardly anyone else would have, certainly anyone that you’d come into contact with. And I love things that that, they’re a real talking point.

I like marcasite too, which isn’t at all popular.

Bunny2021 · 04/06/2021 17:00

Have a look at Emily Mortimer Jewellery - she does some amazing pieces. I’m saving up for one of her Electra rings.

WellTidy · 04/06/2021 17:08

I am really really tempted by that amethyst but am completely inexperienced when it comes to online auction houses and the reviews of the sale room are very mixed. But I know that the guide price for that stone is a bargain. and I can’t stop thinking about it!

mommybunny · 04/06/2021 17:19

My DH is very experienced at online auctions and he says don’t use the Saleroom if you can avoid it. The Saleroom is a platform that includes listings for many global auction houses. I’ve purchased items from the Saleroom from a couple of auction houses and my experiences have generally been good but their commissions are expensive. The actual auction house with this item (which will be included in the listing) may have its own online bidding platform it uses in addition to the Saleroom. You can sometimes also phone the auction house and ask them to phone you when the bidding for your item comes up, so you can bid along with those in the room and online bidders. You need to set this up a day or two before the auction, however.

WellTidy · 04/06/2021 17:25

Thank you, that’s firmed it up for me. I will put it to the back of my mind! Great to know that lovely items like this are out there though.

QueenOfCakeandCoffee · 04/06/2021 17:28

@absolutelyknackeredcow I commissioned Ruth to make me a ring! I love her jewellery but I think she outsources some of the making process rather than does it all herself, if that makes sense?

Probably not classed as a Cocktail Ring but this is a Diamonique Tanzanite .
QVC do have some amazing choices , if you want BIG look at Michelle Mone Diamonique ,

I'd try one of those before I invested ££ in a gemstone .
